The name has to be the Utah Heavy Metal. That way they can have two forms of music that the area is not known for.

Seattle was tossing around "Grunge" as an option.

Denver Pioneers are a massively well-known college hockey club. No dice on that one.

West Virginny has Mountaineers, though not really assoc with hockey, still probably too big a trademark to use.

Snowcats looks like a winner. From what I can see just a couple college ski clubs using it. I dig that one too.

Not sure how that works. For trademarks.  There’s several college teams with the same name. Cougars, bulldogs. Etc.

Is it different for pro sports teams? If the city/state is different for example.

I remember the VGK going thru some legalities on GOLDEN KNIGHTS - Army & some small college somewhere

But I also wonder how the WNBA Las vegas ACES had no problem even though there is the Reno ACES AAA baseball team in the same state

From what I recall, the primary concern is one of confusing two different brands. And yes, the rules seem to be very different for pro (for profit) vs college (non-profit).

Bill Foley wanted to name the Golden Knights the Black Knights after Army. Army wouldn't let him. Even the Golden Knights were a parachute team for Army and there was some concern they would fight over that. Foley gave them some money and worked it out.

You can hammer it out in court, but most prefer to settle on something else to avoid the cost and time. And usually cases get decided in favor of the original mark holder anyway. And the option of agreements where they pay a trademark holder some use fee, and they can work it out that way.

Makes sense.  I guess you can always try and buy naming rights from smaller type outfits.  And the irony of non profit with college is that’s exactly what they are. Big business at least for bigger schools.

This move will shake up the VGK TV territory (The map also has Montana as a TV affiliate)

Wonder if VGK trades out Utah, Idaho for AZ ?!?! Or does Utah & VGK split Idaho, where Boise remains VGK & SE Idaho goes to Utah ?

This was announced by the group that owns the Utah 16 station.

I'm thinking Vegas reaches down into Arizona.  Utah 16 was showing both Golden Knights and Coyote hockey.  So some of these stations may still show both.

Yeah, I think the VGK reach down deeper into Arizona maybe all of Arizona now ...... VGK had the NW corner of Az, basically Mojave County from the Utah border down to Kingman to Lake Havasu -- Imagine VGK will lose most of Utah to the UHC (Utah Hockey Club) but might keep the SW corner of Utah (St George area) since they are only two hours away

Population wise the VGK win if they get all of AZ & lose Utah & Idaho -- Not sure about Montana. VGK owner has businesses & residence up in Montana & I think that was a reason the NHL ceded Montana to VGK from what might have been Colorado Av's territory

The Kraken broadcast into Idaho and Montana, so VGK doesn't 'own' those.  As CKS suggested, much of that territory is fair game.  Unlike, say, the NBA, the NHL can't afford to limit such things.

It gives me a headache just trying to think down to your level

Why would Utah willingly give up their Arizona fan base?

Teams get territorial rights - I know VGK are only in one county in AZ now -

Plus how many in AZ will follow the team that left them - The "AZ Coyotes" are no more from any rights standpoint. and if they return they will get AZ back -- If or when that happens, the VGK territory could be cut to mostly NV & a corner of Utah & Az, which would be the smallest populated TV media territory in sports............which is a problem some pundits point to when talking about LV getting MLB or NBA....... LV TV market is #40 while SLC is #27 & PHX is #11

In MLB, Las Vegas is claimed by AZ D-backs, LA  Dodgers, SD Padres, SF Giants & Oakland A's -- All those teams games are blacked out on the MLB TV web stream - But we get Padres & D-Backs on local cable channels .........Dodgers Giants & A's are not ot be found

Then how do both the Yotes and Knights broadcast in SLC?  The Kraken and Knights in Idaho and Montana?  The territorial rights you refer to are based on miles from the home market.  Which is why VGK has that 1 county in AZ.  For the NBA it's 75 miles, except where teams overlap.

The rest is Fair game.

Could be overlap -- Maybe NHL isn't as locked down as MLB is

We plan on stealing all your fans. And you need to get your hands off St George.  Now that we have a team, the state will be loyal.

If we need to send the Utah National Guard down there, we will to get shit in order.
