NHL IN SLC Utah 2024/25

People are mad that Smith isn’t footing the bill for the new arena, himself, a la Larry H. Miller who paid for the Delta Center in its entirety but things were different 30 years ago when it only cost 93 million to build the arena but that’s the point. With the rising costs of living in the SLC area as it is it just doesn’t make sense to add on unnecessary taxes like this. It’s just one more thing to have to deal with.

Who is mad?

Heard that Smith isn't paying the bill to get the NHL to SLC, but instead getting funding from a sales tax increase on everybody to pay for it. If this goes south, there will be a lot of grumbling in the public eyes.

I hear he’s broke after footing the bill for BYU’s new basketball coach.

Will they play on sundays?

Yeah, I'd imagine this is a big reason that SLC will never have an NFL team.

I think you folks need to come out to our city more often.  Utah as a state is far less LDS than you think.  Only about 42% of the state's population consider themselves LDS. Active is about 28%. SLC is a liberal county. Jazz games have always been full on Sunday games. Our population growth is still one of the fastest in the nation and many folks moving in aren't LDS.

My personal thoughts are, I'm not sure if SLC could support the NBA, NHL, MLS and NFL. That's a big ask right now.  Maybe, but if we can't it won't be because of playing on Sundays.

And people are surprised that you can get beer and alcohol in Utah.  This isn't a dry state.

A lot of Utah stereotypes out there. I'm not LDS and can find anything I want here including entertainment.

Nope. That changed several years ago.

Nice.  Do the bars there still require you to have a membership or if not, have to be sponsored in by someone with a membership?  Haven't been out there in about 20 yrs.

No, that went away years ago too.  There's still some weird things with alcohol here but we are far more mainstream than before.  People won't go thirsty here. LOL

Utah changed some of their liquor laws back when they hosted the 2002/04/06 or whatever year it was Olympics

He's using some of his own money and leveraging a SLC Olympic bid to get a new arena. He also, as I stated previously, spent the last over a year lobbying the NHL and undermining the Coyotes franchise so he could get one of his own. He couldn't wait for an expansion, he had to steal a team with a top notch farm system in order to further his goals. He can get +++++ed.

Seems to me that the Yotes were given more opportunity than maybe any other sports franchise in history to get this thing off the ground, and they have shit the bed for 30 yrs. Have they hung a banner for best farm system? It sure as hell hasn't produced any modicum of success.

Also sounds to me like your post here just proves the guy is a good businessman with the acumen to pull this off.

Downtown was a huge party. They temporarily looked the other way on some laws too during this time. I was walking around downtown outside double fisting going from bar to bar and venue to venue. Pretty cool times.  There is a no open container law preventing drunks walking around town with booze in their hands.

I get that some people are mad about this but the situation in Phx became somewhat toxic.  They had their chance.  It wasn't just Smith looking to jump on this. Looks like the NHL was pushing this as well.
