after 38 seasons.

What are the chances they go after Lindy?

none.  They are already working on a deal with former player/current asst Kate Paye.

Not very surprising she chose now to retire.  I'm only surprised other Stanford coaches aren't doing likewise since Stanford will be competing in the A.C.C. next season (in all sports).   Which will mean at least double the travel distance for road games (maybe triple or quadruple in some cases).   Call me what you may but I think a University CHOOSING to join a conference made up of schools all the way over on the opposite side of this country is an illustration of the fact that just because you are at a University doesn't guarantee that the people running that University are intelligent (or sane).

My first thought was maybe her younger sister Heidi will move on from her HC stint at UCSD and take over in Palo Alto. But her Triton teams aren't exactly setting the world on fire (recent transition from D-2 to D-1, so there's that). Hopefully Stanford will be able to keep the winning tradition going, but the extra travel might be a big hindrance. I bet they try to stay out west for most of their OOC schedule.

I suspect the real reason she retired is because Stanford made it known they're not participating in the NIL game for all sports.  If they don't change their mind then they're going to get destroyed in the ACC.

I think it's because she's 70, has coached Stanford for 38 years, and has been contemplating retirement for several years.

Didn’t Boise join the big east?  I’m old and can’t remember.

Just like their attempt a few years ago at Stanford where the Ivory towered buffoons who "run" Stanford attempted to eliminate about one third of their athletic programs.  Thankfully their idiotic "plan"backfired on them in spectacular and a very enjoyable fashion.  This is just more evidence of the lack of intelligence at Stanford.  Which is very ironic since Stanford is referred to as the "Harvard of the West".

not sure what this proves. Stanford sponsors a ridiculous number of D1 sports (38!)...they need to get rid of some

Her age is more of a convenient excuse to retire.  Even before this season started she was always hyped about going for another National Champinship.  Now she's losing starters to the portal so she knew she couldn't build and maintain teams as before.  Getting a degree from Stanford still has meaning, but the lure of money buying championships overrules that.

There's nothing convenient about being 70.

"After every year I really evaluate it, I've probably retired at least 20 times in my mind," VanDerveer said. "I just felt I'm ready. I never really thought I would be. I just felt like maybe I would just keel over on the bench because I love it. ... It kind of just came together."

She would have had a few more years if she wanted.  Guys like Coach K and Jim Boeheim were close to their mid-70's.

Yeah, but she is hitting the 'perfect storm' all at once: hitting 70, NIL/transfer portal taking over (even in women's sports), and about to join a conference based on the other side of the country. Perfect time to get out.

Well done.

Stanford was late to join the NIL game, but they are already rethinking that stance:

https://stanforddaily.com/2024/02/14/stanford-athletics-to-enhance-engagement-with-nil-collectives/

I think a lot of it had to do with the former president. He was anti-athletics and let Stanford's football and men's basketball programs collapse under his watch.

Realistically, though, refusing to play the NIL game really only hurts the two revenue sports. Unless you are Olivia Dunne, NIL money for Olympic sports is going to be peanuts anyway. Being able to offer a Stanford degree for free is still going to be a better recruiting carrot than most NIL deals.

As for VanDerveer specifically, it is possible that NIL and the transfer portal pushed her over the edge. But I think the main reason is that she is 70 and wants to do something else with her time.

She specifically mentioned her 96 yo mother, and water skiing.
