How good have his teams been at Clovis West over the last eight years?

In two different stints at Clovis West, Walberg has a 559-104 overall record in what is the most competitive league in the Fresno/Clovis area.

At Fresno City College he was 133-11 and won a JC State Championship.

Welp Vance Walberg has chosen his number 1 assistant and it’s a big one. John Welch.

I believe Walberg and Welch were assistants together in the NBA at both the Kings and the Nuggets.

That is good to hear. If you are going to hire a 67 year old coach that has been coaching high school for the last 8 years, he better be the best damn one in the country.

Immediately before SDSU hired Tom Craft he had won two NATIONAL championships at Palomar College. After Craft was canned by SDSU, he won another one at Mt. SAC, Riverside or some such place. He also was a terrific OC for SDSU for a few years. However, at the time Craft was hired, he was the first FBS head coach hired directly from a JC in close to 20 years.

Granted, SDSU's most highly rated football recruiting class ever remains one of the four Craft had. He got everyone excited that second year and I decided I was wrong about him.  However, according to a subsequent Union-Tribune article, something like 48% of that class failed to be on the roster longer than one season. Circumstantial evidence suggests that as a JC coach, he hardly cared a whit about academic ability and character. He also allegedly got the school's strength coach fired which led to settlement of a big money lawsuit against the school, he got SDSU football on NCAA probation for the only time in its history, he slapped one of his starting offensive linemen during a team meeting which further got the football program in hot water with the faculty, he was alleged by boosters to have been visibly drunk at the team hotel the night before a game bringing further bad publicity, etc.

Ask any someone who has legit ties to basketball and they will tell you John Welch has a good mind for the game.

They hired a fvcking 67 yr old coach. That isn't enough "mind"?

This what they always say about assistants that are past their expiration date.

At any rate, neither hire screams program build.  More like they;ll work for the price.

That doesn't mean he can recruit in this era.

If I were an AD, I would invoke ageism, and find a younger, energetic guy who was in tune with the Portal and Team building.

Fresno State is gonna continue sucking!

Well at least Fresno's Tom Craft won't be coaching their football team and when has Fresno ever been good at basketball anyway?

Being serious here for a minute. Maybe the plan is to run men's basketball on the mega-cheap and use the savings to help fund renovation of Bulldog Stadium.

Don't be mad because the refs are going to need Tommy John surgeries after this poorly played game.

Steve Fisher retired at 72. he was past his prime and ineffective, and Dutcher is 64. Should he hang it up at 67?

Meh. Basically the same comments we got from the Tedford hire. Too old, health problems, retread, a young guy would have been better, doesn’t know the new game, blah blah blah. We’ll see how it works out. Not taking any opinions on here seriously.

Any new coach gives hope, but any college that wanted him probably could have had him as an assistant during the last 8 years. I doubt he was making too much coaching high school basketball in Clovis.

"He was likely earning an annual salary of $120,000.
