Fresno State Basketball Coaching Search - Final 4

Recommended Posts

Unless you can afford a big time coach with a great winning record you never know how a new coach hire is going to work out. Who in their right mind would have thought Danny Sprinkle was going to win the MWC with 13 new players. I suspect Walberg will be an improvement over Hutson.

Far from Tony Sanchez. The guy invented the dribble drive offense. Those who know the Pepperdine story know there’s a lot more than what the 14-35 record showed. Lot of stuff went on behind the scenes that sabotaged Walberg.

He has tons of connections not only locally but across the country with the NBA and College. He can actually get butts in seats unlike Hut. All his family is here. He isn’t going anywhere. Kind of like the Tedford situation. I think he’s going to do great here. But he wasn’t the first choice, Ryan Pannone was but he turned it down.

"Vance Walberg is one of the most talented coaches in our country who has been ahead of the trends. His style of play will help get recruits and be appealing to the fans. He is a gatherer who will bring people together for a common cause – Fresno State basketball."

Vance's 2-2-1 press is also respected in the industry.  They should've hired him after Lopes departed and Vance was crushing it at Fresno CC.  I won't go so far as to say he will be great at Fresno given his age and he has been out of the college game for a while, but given his teaching ability and experience in the Valley they could've done worse.

The fact that Fresno State hired a guy that has been a high school coach for the last several years when they used to hire Jerry Tarkanian and the head coach at BYU tells me all I need to know about how this job is regarded in basketball circles.

We play the cards that we are dealt with, until we get out of rut that Chut did for us the last six years, we are where we are.

Yah, I kind of agree.

But 67 is too phucking old for a new hire.  Can't get past that.

You hired a 67 yr old HS coach?

Really? HS?

67?

Just quit the sport. You and your buddies over in San Jose get together and just play video games from November to March. Ask those boys over in Colorado Springs if they want to come over and hang out.

Welp Vance Walberg has chosen his number 1 assistant and it’s a big one. John Welch.

Should have hired Welch as the head coach with Walberg his asst. Lots of experience between those two guys. If they can bring in good recruits as expected Fresno won’t be the laughing stock of the MWC anymore.

Oh wow, that's a big hire. He was an assistant under Tarkanian too.

Why is this a "big hire"?

Serious question.

Is the age of NIL and players leaving  for all manner of reasons, what on Earth makes you think a 67 yr old HS coach can bring in AND retain players?

This was not/is not a hire meant to grow a program and culture.

I'm not sure what purpose it serves TBH.

Looks like they couldn't find anyone else to take the job.

I had never heard of John Welch before but in checking his bio, he's certainly worked for some excellent head coaches so I'd say that as an assistant, he's a very good hire.  However, at 61 he's no spring chicken either so Walberg better fill the rest of his staff with young guys.

After SDSU's then-athletic director whiffed on hiring Jeff Tedford, he created a committee of fans and another composed of former players to helpwith his search. The result was the hiring of former SDSU OC Tom Craft who supposedly killed it during interviews before those committees whose members loved him because he was a great OC. In comparison to Chuck Long, Craft's on-field production wasn't bad. However, it wasn't good either and Craft got SDSU into more trouble with the NCAA and the media than any head football coach I can remember.

All these years later, Craft remains a very good JC football coach. However, being a head coach at the FBS level is when the Peter Principle caught up to him and I'm pretty sure the same will be true of Walberg.

Funny enough our AD went the other way.  Given his other hires I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.
