Moving to Vegas

Recommended Posts

The Scotch 80's area which is east of Rancho /south of Charleston with Oakley on the south is an old well to do neighborhood -- think Goodman's of LV mayoral fame live in that area

Then the other side is old big $$ Rancho Circle

The Medical District is blowing up right there too with UNLV's new Medical School building

One thing i've noticed about "Vegas" a is that the growth has been so explosive over the last 40+ years that older areas (that aren't really that old) sort of get a bad rap .....there's people that would tell you the older north party of Green Valley is ghetto !!

Yes, the Goodmans live there. Nicholas Cage did too when he first moved to town. Steve Wynn, Jerry Lewis as well just off the top of my head. Elizabeth Taylor and and Eddie Fisher shacked up in my house for a little while in the early sixties.  Holly Madison lives/lived in Rancho Circle recently. Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top has a house in there. Pauly Shore just moved out I think. Of course tons of old school Vegas celebs lived in there as well. When we first moved into the area my first celeb encounter was Pat Morita at Smith's.  We talked about cheese. Brandon Flowers lived on Pinto. A lot of houses around here had somebody with a name living in them back in the day.  Not in my neighborhood but over on 6th or 7th street Jerome Mack's old house just sold. They told me MJ Christensen and Lee Majors used to live in the houses across the street from me.  That kind of thing. Who knows though. It seems memories get a little fuzzy about this stuff.

And yes, speaking of "old" not being that old. My house was built in '59 so it's 65 years old but it's wild to think of "new" areas like original Summerlin or The Lakes or OG Green Valley that were started in the 80s. They're pushing 40.  They're really not much younger in a sense.  Our town is still just a baby.

That's where my wife lived growing up. All those custom lots around R. Guild Gray Elementary.

NV Giant, remember him?  He grew up in section 11 or 12  I think.

Ralph Engelstad who owned the Imperial Palace & was a General Contractor / Developer owned a house just the other side , north of Alta across from Rancho Circle

To find a really "old" house you've got to get downtown & even then they were probably built in the 40's or 50's ........not much really left from the 1920/30 era days

Another older area that's having a comeback is the area east of the Stratosphere where there's some nice older ranch style houses that have been fixed up

Starting to see the 1950's 60's era portions get new blood & investment in that area just SE of LV Blvd & Charleston down to Maryland Pkwy

Oh yeah? I didn't know Englestadt was over there. There's something the Englestadt foundation donated right by there. Like a private park next to a church. Interesting.

Yes, have some friends and associates on the other side of the tracks in John S Park, Huntridge, etc.  Some amazing homes and great people over there. My great grandma lived on Santa Paula. My dentist as a kid was on Paradise and St Louis. Wish that little house was still in the family.

I grew up in old North Las Vegas off of Lake Mead and Eastern in the real hood. Rancho High class of '94.

I moved to Vegas in 94, and I worked 6 months during the day at beautiful D Street and Bonanza at Haycock Petroleum to get my residency. I used to drive one of those Haycock tankers you used to see around town. When I started school, I worked graveyard there from 6pm to 4:30am M-F. That is one crazy ass neighborhood at night.

You can find stuff built in the 20s & 30s out in Boulder City.  The stuff near DT in Scotch 80s / Rancho Circle area is nice with big lots.  But outside of the nice bucolic 2 block area you live in lies all the things you want to avoid.  I have lived p/t in Anthem (and LA) since around 2006.  It is nuts how that area has developed into W. Hendo.

Yes, it is. A weird area. Edge of downtown meets some light industrial meets a few very old houses.

The Tenaya Creek brewery is on Bonanza over there now.

If you know, you know. I live in the Rancho and Charleston area. Yes, the grocery store and the schools aren't what you find in Henderson/Summerlin but around that immediate area the neighborhoods are actually pretty well to do and are way more expensive than a lot of people think (expect for me, I bring the place down lol).  We have crazy awesome Halloweens, wine walks, block parties, etc. and we all know each other.  I used to say it's like a small town within the town but it is going through some significant changes.  With the explosion of the Arts District, "downtown" seems to be expanding into us. Kinda sucks as the character of the neighborhood is getting more urban but there a lots of great restaurants and bars on Main Street so gotta take the bitter with the sweet. I told Greg that the general neighborhood is a little gritty for most people but really most people are pussy cats that overreact. I've lived here since 2001 and I've personally never have had one crime problem. Not saying it's as safe as the edge of Henderson but it's fine.  I get around the city pretty good for my job and honestly most parts of the city really aren't that different from one another in my opinion. A lot of people that think they live in a "nicer" neighborhood really don't, or at least it isn't as special as they think it is.  Of course there are more affluent and less affluent parts of the city, but there's plenty of good places.  Even on the east side. There's a few really nice subdivisions up against Sunrise Mountain and are a great value.  Freeway access is non-existent, but still, you can get a nice big modern house with great views.

Yeah, you can find great neighborhoods anywhere in Vegas. A lot of the older neighborhoods have a character that you can't find elsewhere. Sure they don't have the same amenities that move out to the burbs, but they also have other, more ethnic and authentic family-owned restaurants and markets and such that people from the burbs come in to dine and shop at. You don't need chain grocery stores and chain restaurants to live. My Dad's house was near Chinatown and if I was more into Asian cuisine, I probably would've kept it and moved back into the old house. There are some fantastic restaurants down there.

And I agree that many places in the "nicer" part of town ain't all that nice.

Even the old parts of Vegas are young by most metro standards. The majority of the city is post 1970. There aren't that many neighborhoods older than that.

Yeah the subdivisions are nice. I have a few friends that live there. The problem is you have to shop at the store on Sahara/Charleston and Valley View.  Same thing with Lake Las Vegas.  Fantastic place.  But you're doing all your shopping/ business on Boulder Hwy/Lake Mead with methheads.

When the freeway wasn't jammed up it was 10 minutes to the Town Square Whole Foods. Also we have the fashion show mall. So, pretty much any bougie amenity is available. Not to mention Main Street where a bunch of restaurants started and branched to the downtown summerlin Mall, like Esther's, Makers and Finders, Casa don Juan, tacotarian, etc.

Yup. Went to school with Clint. My wife's house was two houses down from the Reynolds, so she knew them much better. We didn't travel in the same social circles as them though.

Yeah it really is the chain restaurants, the big box retail and grocery stores that can be a little less convenient, though not as much in your location. The Spring Valley area has seen quite a few grocery stores move out in favor of the ethnic grocers (asian and hispanic). But its not like you can't get most of what you would need from those stores too.

My current location is a little more convenient for work, but I would love to move back to your area after I retire. Downsize the house in favor of a bigger lot. Plus it is closer to the medical core which will be nice as we age. That area has a ton going for it.

You definitely belong in Anthem LOL!
