Alford to Oklahoma State?

Recommended Posts

I think it’s a ploy to get an extension from Nevada. But who knows. I also didn’t think Sprinkle would go to Washington after a season.

Rumors floating out there. What say you Pack fans?

I’ll believe it when I see it. Some of us think it’s just leverage to get an increase & extension, more NIL money and more for his assistants, in some sort of amounts. I think UCLA ruined the P5 rat race for him, and he’s basically said that. I really think he wants to stay at Nevada until he retires, and he’s put a ton of effort and fundraising into getting things built up the way he likes them.

Then there’s the new state of the art $400 mil arena that he’s said will be one of the very best in the country, and would allow him to recruit elite talent. And the new GSR crazy ass driving range that he can use at lunch had him calling it as good as it gets. This is him going nuts at the announcement:

What are your thoughts if he leaves? I kinda got the sense some Nevada fans here were pretty pissed with the let down against Dayton.

theres no way he's getting another gig, the writing is on the wall with the guy-like three Sweet-16s in 30 years and otherwise a perennial early bounce in the 1st Round without any sustained success in the dance outside of a few years at UCLA where he had absolute filthy talent and still underachieved

It might be a very disappointing life for Coach Alford over those 30 years..  He never coached a player that was a better player in college than he was.  He never coached a team that was as good as his college team.

If he leaves we will be fine.  It’s been proven here by several coaches you can win here.  This coupled with a new arena coming in 2026-2027 it will be a very attractive job.  Wouldn’t be shocked to see the Grand Sierra throw in more money for a coach given their investment in the program.

I see Alford as a good coach but I get the feeling he’s coasting part of the time. Not sure why.

If you read about his life he absolutely has to look at the game through a different lens.

Both very high bars.

If they come for him we can’t stop them. Too much money. He’s a good Nevada coach and rebuilt our program from scratch. I’d like to keep him but oh well.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

Oklahoma State is beyond sad if they hire him.

Steve Alford failed twice at P5 schools.

Obviously we're all disappointed, but ultimately Alford is one of the best coaches in the conference, and unless we catch lightning like Musselman again then we aren't getting anyone better.

In Boise fan fashion, I think a lot of us thought that Alford had already coached at the P5 level and just wanted to end his career in one place, in the one conference he's succeeded in.

But I can't blame him if he takes the OSU job, the Big 12 will be a fun league.

It does get exhausting going through constant rebuilds in basketball and football. I really hope he stays.

He has a very similar track record to Lon Kruger, who worked out for Oklahoma. Both of them are on a very short list of coaches that have taken 5 teams to the NCAA tournament. If Alford took Oklahoma State I believe he'd be the only coach to ever take 6.

His assistant, PoS Neal, used similar rumors to secure an undeserved extension. Tellingly, rumor is about Alford showing interest, not the opposite, none of any programs chasing Alford.  Perhaps Stevie feeling unloved after the Tourney collapse?

I think all Nevada fans were pissed about the let down, but now that some time has passed, I think most realize the letdown was mostly on the team and lack of execution, not gameplan. That being said, if he goes, he goes.....that's life for all but a few programs. Hell, even Kansas lost a coach when Roy Williams bolted for UNC. Just part of the landscape of college basketball as a mid-major.

Sounds exactly like the Lon Kruger situation, absolute collapse in the tournament and out of nowhere a desperate p5 program comes calling.
