I don't want to sound like a disgruntled old man, but the portal and nil has really ruined college basketball for me.

I really used to love to watch players develop as the years go on.  That is over.  And it largely has ruined college basketball for me as well.  Sad.

NIL hasn't ruined the game.

The money was already there. It was just dark. In the margins. I'm reading stories about guys making $750k and the Boosters offering a 20% increase to get him to stay for his Senior season. He turned pro and only made $675k his rookie season. Bad business decision.

The Wild West Transfer Portal is what ruined the game.

I no longer follow the recruiting wars. Why ? Because as soon as a kid shows something, he's gone. A kid moves up the Depth Chart in Spring Ball, is awarded the top spot, he's in the Portal. If a kid loses a spot, he's in the Portal.

What next ? Pre Conference play transfers portals ?

It's insane.

Disagree, although not primarily, it absolutely added to the demise of college sports as we know it right now.  How can a fanbase, like the SDSU's of the world, afford to annually pay players tens of millions, to be competitive nationally?  Answer:  They Can't.  And that holds true for almost all teams, outside of super booster teams like Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, etc., etc., etc.

It's always been there. See the LA Times uncovering of the U$CLA payola scandals in the 50's. It was the death knell of the then Pacific States Conference. The demise of the NIT is directly related to the gambling scandals at the NY Metro basketball Schools in the 50's. Schools like SDSU still found their way.

The transfer portal is killing the have-nots. Giving kids one transfer, was fair to all.

I will not be surprised if there is a pre Conference play Portal in the future.

I do agree the transfer portal is the biggest issue. The only real solution to that is to consider student athletes employees and have a collective bargaining agreement between the student athletes union and the schools. Money would need to come from the schools directly instead of unaffiliated boosters, then you could lock them into longer contracts than 1 year. Independent NIL deals could still be negotiated with third parties same as in pro leagues. This is going to create a host of other problems and will drastically reduce the amount of non revenue sports.

The fans I guess. That’s the lens most of us take on forum like this.

Exactly. When you follow a team or players and some opponent rich booster buys them out it has an impact on that teams fans. And if you say so what, the entire structure of college and pro sports would collapse without the fans support.

Yep, no NIL or Booster money, tv money, scholarships, or fancy facilities without the fans. I get the players should have a chance to be compensated, but they are risking turning away fans with the current structure.

I can live with Ike being bought by Gonzaga.

More difficult to swallow is when basketball powerhouses such as Radford and Drake take the only good players Wyoming has on its roster.

yes, it is.

I just like to push back a little on all the "doom and gloom"...widen back and take a look at the big picture. None of us know how all this will eventually play out, so why choose to worry or be pessimistic?

Other than Ike - Do you believe that the exodus of players at Wyoming over the last two years is NIL driven?

No that’s why I was saying the transfer portal was a bigger problem. I get that Linder being a dick head has ran some players out , but I think the portal problems run much deeper than that.

In that sense, what’s wrong with the portal? Shouldn’t players be allowed to leave an asshole coach if they want?

I wonder how many still would have left if we did have a better culture within the program? My gut says most of them.

Why would they have still left? None of our players are getting picked up by great programs.  Personally, it appears to me they are going to much worse conferences and programs (Radford and Drake).  My gut says pretty much none of them leave if we have a better program culture and a decent head coach.

If the reason is they don’t like Laramie, then why have we pretty much kept the football team intact with very minimal transfers?

Did Linder steal your girl or what? You bitch about the guys he brings in, then you bitch when those guys leave. If you think the kid that went to Radford was the saving grace, why were other high profile schools not involved? You’re nauseating.

Actually I spent the past 4 years sitting behind Linder at games listening to him and watching how he interacts with folks and treats players.  I am not renewing next season however if you’re interested in the seats. You might even have the place to yourself!  I guess you support the direction Linder has taken the program and the million plus or so he is paid per year.

Thankfully - the football program is something to look forward to.
