it will be interesting to see how many are really looking to move vs negotiating more NIL $$$

I'd bet 50-75% of these transfers are being done by agents who are shopping their players around ........... enter the portal, see what the offers look like .......can always stay where you are if the offers aren't up to expectations.

And I'd say that 75+% of the small school transfers are guys who weren't that highly recruited out of HC but managed to put up some numbers & are now using their season to shop offers from similar or larger programs

Also, don't think that a player isn't in the portal to squeeze more $$ out of their current program.

Imagine the scrambling UNLV NIL would have to do if D Thomas Jr. suddenly hit the portal with an offer of $200 G from Arizona.........would UNLV NIL match it or go higher or let him walk ?!?!

Basically these days if your school doesn't have a deep NIL fund, your going to be poached when any player shows any potential.........I'd bet this is the case at SJSU where some of those guys had decent years statistically & could do well as a role player in another programs that will pay

When a player goes into the portal then they have already made the decision to leave the program. At that point the scholarship is open and free to be used at the discretion of the program. At our level there is no way to play the highest bidder game and it will only lead to bigger problems. Wish them the best and move on. I have 30 years of real world experience in this arena. You can’t take anything personally and can’t bend over to guys that don’t want to be part of your program.

you're right about not "taking it personally"...but that doesn't mean giving up.

it means seeing it from the player's perspective, it's not personal, just business.

if he can get a "raise" staying put he might be willing to accept less than moving into an unknown situation.

2 way street there. Programs have limitations also. Player goes in the portal, at that point that scholarship is open and needs to be filled. If something can be worked out for that guy to recommiit then great but there is zero reason to wait 1 second in looking for who will fill that scholarship. when it is filled it is filled and no loyalty is owed to the guy that gave it up. His choice, its just business, right?

yeah, the coaches definitely have to be working both sides of the street

just don't automatically give up on a kid just because they "portal"

I would think that by the time a player enters the portal that almost everything that can be said has already been said. I'm not saying to "give up" on that guy but I am saying that if a better option presents itself then you pull the trigger and move on without thinking twice or wasting 1 second of time. In the words of Michael Corleone, it's just business.

That's why some players enter the portal but don't leave they withdraw from the portal -- could be negotiations, could be offers didn't come in

But just entering the portal doesn't mean you're gone unless the coach wants you gone I suppose

Well, dj already announced his decision to return. So won't be overly worried there.

This is djs team. So I expect him to be recruiting top talent along with the staff.

Should see some solid scorers names linked to UNLV in the coming months.

Should.

Price too high. We are a poor school from the south.

Hometown discount?
