thelawlorfaithful
Tadej smashes the TT and crushes the mountain top finish. This is a procession at the point. Danny Martinez 2:40 down, G just behind him. Spaztecs
I am surprised UAE rode so hard today and Tadej chose to chase every non GC attack. He has the Giro sewn up. His goal should be to conserve energy for the Tour. I would let every break go and follow whoever is in second place. In his quest to "win stages", he will lose the Tour. Spaztecs
It's mind boggling how much better Pogacar is than the rest of the field. This is Tiger Woods style domination. The rest of the the field is of decent quality, but he is head and shoulders above them. Barring disaster, he will wear Pink for 20 out of 21 days. I've taken a cursory browse of the web and can't find any info as yet as to whether that is a record. It probably is. I can't help but think with the vast majority of money, Media attention and Corporate muscle that shows at the Tour, it causes a power vacuum at the Giro. No one wants to risk losing the Tour because they shot their wad at the Giro. Which, is a shame. With Vingegaard looking like a non-factor for the Tour because he is still recovering from injuries. He will not ride at the Dauphine or Suisse. There are no signs of Remco as yet despite his Teams Social Media claims of his crushing power numbers in training. It's still just training and not actual racing. Primoz has been a non-factor this Spring and is on the back end of his career. It looks as if the stars may be aligning for Tadej to double. 1 Quote "We don't have evidence but, we have lot's of theories." It's still just training and not actual racing. Primoz has been a non-factor this Spring and is on the back end of his career. It looks as if the stars may be aligning for Tadej to double. The double seems likely. But this Giro is filled with tomato cans, as they call them in boxing. Tadej needed to bring something out of this season because Jonas backed by Visma was too overwhelming. The Giro looked like a nice feather in the cap if he didn’t think he could beat them. This scared everybody that’s on his level away. I don’t think Jonas will be recovered by July. Roglic will be and Remco too. And even in a dominating fashion against lesser competition the Giro will take a lot out of Tadej. Roglic and Bora should have the firepower ready to make it a race. Remco doesn’t, but he’s a phenom capable of who knows what. And Visma is loaded, albeit without the best climber in the world. They can make things stressful everyday. Kuss has proven he can do it over three weeks. They have multiple guys to threaten and harass UAE’s A team (which will be phenomenally strong in the mountains). And Van Aert should be back with avengence. I think he does it. May seems like a cakewalk but July is a different animal altogether. Froome tried but couldn’t do it. Armstrong never even thought about it. Indurain pulled it off. And of course Merckx. But Hinault couldn’t do it. He’s gotten lucky with every other major contender landed in the mash unit. But this Giro is limp, and the Tour is the Tour. We’ll see in a month. Quote We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch. thelawlorfaithful
G crashes and Tadej waits. It’s a procession at this point but Tadej will probably want to spike the ball tomorrow on Mount Grappa. Thomas is 22 seconds behind Martinez. Ben O’Connor needs someone to blow up to make the podium. 6 stage wins in a Grand Tour is rare but not unprecedented. Merckx and Hinault each did 7 once. The rest of the list is a few dominant sprinters. Still, this Giro was never in doubt. 1 Quote We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. I was reading about Freddy Maartens who many consider to be Belgiums 2nd best rider or 1B at worst. In 1977, he showed up at the Vuelta and won 13 of 21 stages. He won the GC and Points competition. Five days later he showed up at the Giro and won 7 of the first 11 stages and had to withdraw due to injury after Stage 8a. That was one month of total domination. 1 Quote "We don't have evidence but, we have lot's of theories." Americans Mayor

Spaztecs
Quite the Stage today. A double ascent of the Monte Grappa. The tifosi were out in force. They were even stacked in two deep on the climb within the descent I loved the taxidermist with the pink bowler running with the race while carrying a stuffed and mounted fox. Who himself was resplendent in pink scarf. Of all the bike races in the world the tifosi at the Giro are the best. I keep hearing riders, fans, and journos constantly say, it's "their race". And they party like it is. The Belgian Classics fans are a solid second. Their races are religion. Holy Week and all that. The Basque fans. Enthusiastic. Travel well. Rarely cause roadside issues with the racers. The worst I saw was a decade back when there were simply more fans than road space and the cyclists literally couldn't pass one another on the climb. thelawlorfaithful
Tadej goes home in pink with 6 stage wins and a 9:56 seconds advantage of Danny Martinez. Gerraint Thomas, at 38, rounds out the podium. It is the largest time gap in the Giro since 1965, when the top 10 were all Italians before it blew up into a more global endeavor. He held the jersey for 20 of the 21 days. Needless to say this has not been done in decades. For now Pogacar is going to rest. Remco and Roglic are recovered and going to square off at the Dauphine. Jonas is aiming for the Tour but won’t be racing until then. Who knows if he’ll be fully recovered. I doubt it. Kuss and Van Aert may have to save the season for Visma.
