SDSU vs USU

Recommended Posts

The two teams tied for first meet in Logan Tuesday night. SDSU coming off a thumping of New Mexico and USU getting thumped by CSU. It seems like the team that just got thumped (USU) ends up beating the fat and happy cat (SDSU) especially at home.

Not sure that’s going to be the case this time. SDSU matches up well with USU. Ledee is just as strong if not stronger than Osobor. The Aztec guards match up well with the Aggie guards. The Aztecs may be a little better at forward and have a stronger bench.

So far the Aztecs have failed at beating the better MWC teams on the road having lost at New Mexico, CSU, Boise State, and Nevada. My gut tells me they finally reverse that trend and beat the Aggies.

It is a very big game.  Winner will have inside track to get the #1 seed for the conference tournament.  Don't have a very good feeling about this one for the Aggies.  The Aztecs are on another level with physicality.  Be interesting to see how they guard Ledee as he is a mismatch nightmare.  If the Aztecs hit 3's like they did the first meeting it will be lights out.  The Aztecs will be playing at altitude but also have the extra day of rest since they played on Friday so that reduces that advantage for the Aggies.

Fouls will be a factor, SDSU has fouled a good bit more than in prior years and in general home court biggest advantage is the refs imo in college. SDSU has had it both ways, if that's going to be the case Utah State maybe in good shape and SDSU's bigs (not just ledee but also pal) could get in foul trouble. The bench has been playing real well of late, especially elijah saunders who was in a big time funk as a starter but playing in a hostile environment is a different animal. Will be interesting. Can't afford the give away turnovers we had against New Mexico.

I think the key will be minimizing turnovers.  Just about everyone committed multiple TOs against UNM.  We got away with it because the Lobos committed almost as many as we did, but we shot better.

I think the more disciplined team wins. The Aztecs need to go inside unless there are wide open shots outside. Don't get caught up in a three contest and take care of the basketball. Should be a good game.

Go Aztecs!!

Tru dat. However, I think it was you yourself who pointed out that LeDee (proper spelling) gets only half as many calls on the road as he does at Viejas Arena.

Given the significance of the game, I'll put the over/under of the number of SDSU fans in attendance at just 12 and the thousands of others there will be screaming their lungs out all night.

For those reasons an Aztec win would be a huge surprise to me.

Lol. Are there even 12 Aztec fans that know where Logan is much less find their way there. It’s one of the more off the beaten path schools in the MWC.

I know it well because my daughter married an Aggie and lives there. No, she’s not an Aggie fan, I properly indoctrinated her growing up as a Boise State fan.

Put me down as knowing exactly where Logan and the USU campus is. I would like to make the 2 1/2 hour trek from where I live in Wyoming. However, the 7pm start and the weather are making that kinda iffy. You want to drive as little as possible at night around here. 👀❄️🫎🦌🦬🦙🦣🐐 🐻🦝🐎🐄🦫🦡🦇🦚🦆🐿👽

Will depend on the refs, if challenging Ledees stiff arm or shoulder first drives are defensive fouls, SDSU wins, if Ledee is forced to play basketball like everyone else (no camping in the lane, shoving on rebounds, and take downs on post ups) then early foul trouble for Ledee could give USU a path to victory.

Wild card for me is Miles Byrd, he is swelling up for a breakout game and nobody in the MWC can match up with him.  If Ducher ever decides to feature this guy, probably lights out for USU.

Ledee and Osobor are a push, no pun intended. Osobor is more likely to get the calls in his favor in Logan. Byrd is a very athletic player and a future MWC star, but being young is prone to taking bad shots and making mistakes. The key to beating the Aggies is stopping Martinez and Brown. Keep those two in check and the Aztecs win.

Pat Riley's formula for road success was shot selection and equalizing the Free Throws.

Sadly, the Beauty Polls have ranked the Aztecs and put the Jobu curse upon us.

The MW Jobu Curse never fails in  FB or BB

Same here.

It's an hour and a half from me. With the projected snow and late night drive home.

I keep waiting for the MW to schedule the Aztec game in Logan on a weekend afternoon.

I like Byrds game a lot but CSU has a player that matches up well with him (Nique Clifford).

Byrd has shown signs this year. At times brilliant, at times, he still makes rookie mistakes. I'm hoping he just makes less mistakes right now.

Although you can't make a kid with two left feet into an athlete no matter how much you work with him, you CAN make an athlete with limited composure into a star if you work with him enough. Hopefully, that's going to be Miles Byrd.
