Lets try to rank em again!

Recommended Posts

Their have been some surprising results of late

Tier 1: The 5 favorites (yes there are that many)

1. Utah State: Yes even with the recent 2! game losing streak they rank first, they not only beat Boise, they beat them impressively.

2. San Diego State: I thought at first I would have them lower doing this exercise but after looking at some numbers they fit here. No team has been more predictable in MWC than SDSU, all 4 of their losses are too 4 of the top 5 teams in the conference on road. Have taken care of all other games.

3. Colorado State: Colorado State is hitting its stride at the right time, however their recent big wins all came at home, they have a brutal 3 game stretch (@ sdsu/ vs Nevada/ @ UNM) that will tell us more about them.

4. Nevada: Big week gets them into good position to make ncaa tourney. Their bigs have stepped up and have rebounded better of late

5. Boise State: Boise was outmanned against Utah State, amazingly Boise's 6th in conference play in defensive rating. For them to reach their goals that will need to improve, Leon teams usually play great defense.

Tier 2: The jekyll and hyde crew

6. New Mexico: At it's best UNM has looked better than any MWC team, they also have multiple surprising home losses. UNM goes as their guards shoot, House/Marshburn need to be more consistent and Pitino needs to real them in more when they are struggling

7. UNLV: Big time win in New Mexico, Dedan Thomas is a stud, can they build off that? The road game in Fresno is a classic trap game coming up, coming off a emotional win and having a rivalry game after, can they show maturity and win that? We will see

Tier 3: The bad but not dreadful

8. Wyoming: Has shown signs of competence, but prior to the bye had 2 disappointing losses they weren't that competitive in.

9. Fresno State: They won back to back games in AFA/SJSU which keeps them from next tier

Tier 4: The awful

10/11 AFA/SJSU: I don't care to rank these

USU - My favorite to win the Regular Season and Conference Tourney.

UNR - Hotter than asphalt in August.

Boise - The remaining schedule favors them. Their toughest game is @SDSU.

CSU - The next five are a gauntlet with roadies @SDSU, the Pit, and Vegas.

UNM - They will battle with SDSU and UNLV for the coveted 5 seed.

UNLV - Can they jump to #5 avoid the extra game ?

SDSU - No quality bigs, no Titles, no Tourney bids.

Pokes - Mightiest of the Midgets

Fres-no

San Ho

Honestly I would throw Fresno in with the AF/SJSU crowd. I get Fresno is the best of those 3 (they are 4-0 vs AF/SJSU) BUT Fresno has only beat the bottom feeders. The only other team that only has win(s) vs bottom feeders is SJSU. Even AF one win came over UNLV. WY beat Nevada and Colorado State at home.

It does appear pretty certain that the 8/9 game is going to be WY/Fresno though.

I find it odd that the 2 Aztec fans that have posted their rankings have UNM over UNLV by one place when UNLV has swept UNM.

As of this posting, Lunardi at ESPN Bracketology has FIVE MWC teams in the NCAAT

CSU 6 Seed

BSU 9 Seed as Automatic Qualifier

SDSU 5 Seed

USU 7 Seed

UNM 9 Seed

The odd thing about the above prognostication is...........if BSU is the AQ from the MWC, that means they probably beat some of the other MWC NCAA teams, so why is BSU a NINE SEED & SDSU a FIVE SEED.........also there's a decent chance SDSU could finish 3rd to 6th in the MWC depending on the outcome of the rest of the season ...........but the way the MWC is going, there's potentially SIX teams could be 1st to 6th in the MWC ?!?!

Brace yourselves, gird your loins & secure your DEPENDS* for what might be a wild ride the rest of the MWC schedule

Considering Aztecs have played in the last 6 MWC tournament title games, and 9 out of the last 10, Lunardi's probably expecting more of the same. But I will have a pack of Depends at the ready for this tourney.
