We seemed to have found something with a sustainable running game. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

Running might take a hit if Quali transfers. Not much experience behind him.

I like some of our assistants for the job but if you can get Coach Ken (easier to spell than his last name) and can make a deal work, I think you do it.  Instant track record and credibility to (a) keep players from entering the portal and (b) maybe bringing a few of the decent players still in the portal into the fold.  The main question is the ability to not rely on the triple option, which his Navy teams were known for.  I could see some QBs and WRs being uneasy about bringing him in otherwise.

One thing I like about him is that he stayed in Annapolis for a long time even when he had other opportunities.  For a program tired of getting coaches poached as soon as they start winning, that's important.

Beat me to it. He’d be a very good hire, if so. Not sure about his recruiting expertise out west, but if he can somehow retain Alonzo Carter, that problem would be solved.

IDK, last three years at Navy he was 4-8, 4-8, 3-7 in 2020-22 and he had a 3-10 in 2018.

The introduction of the transfer portal seemed  to have been hard for Navy. He openly admitted that and said he has learned a ton about it at UCLA. Kind of refreshing to hear

Odom has been a quality and loyal member of SJSU's staff but has he ever been a HEAD coach anywhere? That same question applies to Carter. For that matter, has Carter even been a coordinator anywhere?

Jay Hill is a very good defensive coach but if he's hired, he'll take as much air out of the ball as he can in Rocky Hoke fashion. I don't know much about Eck except he seems to be doing a very good job at Idaho.

It’s obviously moot now, but yea, Carter was the head coach at Contra Costa College (a JUCO) for 6 years. It obviously was not at a four year, but you asked if he had ever been a head coach “anywhere”, and the answer to that is yes.

Just looking at Niumatalolo’s record, one thing that stands out to me is that he had a very good stretch in years 8-12, his first five years in the AAC (11-2, 9-5, 7-6, 3-10, 11-2). You see some coaches start with a bang within the first few years and then never come close to recapturing that; but that’s not what happened with Niumatalolo at all.

Sure, his teams regressed in years 13-15, but if his SJSU career follows the same path I’ll be ok if the program regresses when my second grader is finishing her undergrad.

Hey I like SJSU and hope he does great. Just not sure you can call him an upgrade at this point, Brennan did a heck of a job there considering the meager resources.

Meh, I didn’t love him. He benefited a lot from good recruiting from his assistants

Yeah, I wonder what Eric Scott is up to? He was responsible for bringing an incredible amount of WR talent to Nevada.

Is he following Brennan to Arizona?

Yea, no way a HC should get any credit for his assistants recruiting well.....
