2024 Mountain West Conference Softball thread

Recommended Posts

THREE of Boise State's starters are NOT starters today.  Namely 1B/3B Sydney Groves - who is tied for the lead in the MWC in home runs with 16 (but hasn't hit one for quite a while now).  As well as RF  Mykenzie Hanna and C Leah McAnally.    Don't know the reason WHY these three are sitting out this game but maybe it has to do with what they have done at the plate in the two previous games vs. New Mexico:

Hanna went 0-3 and 0-3 - 0 for 6 = .000 BA

McAnally went 0-4 and 1-4 - 1 for 8 = .125 BA

Groves went 0-4 and 1-3 - 1 for 7 = .143 BA

That's a combined 2 hits in 21 at bats.  Which works out to be a .095 batting average for the three of them in the last two games.

Next weekend Boise State will be @ Colorado State to determine who finishes in 6th place for the 2024 Mountain West Conference softball tournament.   If one of these two teams loses two of the three games - played @ Colorado State - that team will be the 6th seed for the tournament.

San Diego State will play @ U.N.L.V.   The Rebels would have to sweep San Diego State to overtake them and become the # 1 seed at the tournament with a record of 15-7 vs. 14-8 for San Diego State.  This seems unlikely at best but it is possible.

Fresno State will be playing @ New Mexico (who has been playing pretty well of late - especially considering only 2 of their starters are hitting above .300).   If Fresno State wins all 3 games this weekend then the Bulldogs COULD overtake Nevada and finish as either the # 1 or # 2 seed at the tournament (depending on how U.N.L.V. does against San Diego State).

San Jose State will be playing @ Utah State in a battle of the teams with the worst conference records this season.  If San Jose State manages to win 2 of these 3 games they would finish 8th in the conference standings but would be technically ahead of Utah State due to winning the 3 game series between them.

Does the MW have any shot at two bids? I don’t usually follow the seeding process.

The top three RPI’s currently stand at:

38. San Diego State

44. Nevada

47. Fresno State

As they say anything is possible but given the rigged system that's been in place for decades it is probably unlikely.    Look at how many S.E.C. teams got in last season when those teams - for the most part - BOMBED at the tournament.

Going to be interesting to watch the Fresno/UNM and SDSU/UNLV series. Still lots to be determined.

Games this weekend SDSU/UNLV & FSU/NM.  If SDSU wins 1 game they're champs unless UNLV sweeps & they're champs.  However, If FSU also sweeps they have the tiebreaker over UNLV.  If Nevada wins yesterday to sweep SDSU & UNLV wins 1 they would have been champs but that's off the table now.  Best guess SDSU wins 1 or more to take the championship & the rest of us are looking at tournament seeding.

The Broncs looked pretty good against the Pack.  They'll get pumped up again in the tournament.

Last Sunday the Boise State game vs. New Mexico was preceded by the Senior day activities for the Boise State softball team and the six following Boise State softball players were involved:

1B/DP - Karizma Bergesen (2024 transfer from San Jose State)

RHP - Taylor Caudill

RF/DP - Alycia Flores

2B/C - Abby Bumcrot

1B/DP - Ashlyn Whalen

LF - Jordyn Hutchins

So it would appear that these six players above will not be returning for the 2025 season even tho - as I see it - several of them have eligibility remaining.

Two Seniors on the 2024 Boise State softball roster did not participate in the 2024 Senior day activities:

RHP - Jenna Bloom

C - Isabel Gusman

In softball you are paying for school. That might have something to do with it.

FRIDAY MAY 3, 2024 MOUNTAIN WEST SOFTBALL SCHEDULE

San Jose State @ Utah State - 4 p.m. MT

Fresno State @ New Mexico - 5 p.m. PT

Boise State @ Colorado State - 6 p.m. MT

San Diego State @ U.N.L.V. - 3 p.m. PT Edited by UNLV2001

SATURDAY MAY 4, 2024 MOUNTAIN WEST SOFTBALL SCHEDULE

Fresno State @ New Mexico - 11 a.m. PT

San Jose State @ Utah State - Noon MT

San Diego State @ U.N.L.V. - 3 p.m. PT

Boise State @ Colorado State - 6 p.m. MT

SUNDAY MAY 5, 2024 MOUNTAIN WEST SOFTBALL SCHEDULE

Fresno State @ New Mexico - 10 a.m. PT

Boise State @ Colorado State - Noon MT

San Jose State @ Utah State - Noon MT

San Diego State @ U.N.L.V. - Noon PT

I apparently completely misread the Boise State schedule for this week - my apologies - as the first Boise State softball game vs. Colorado State was played last night (Thursday 5-2-24) at 6 p.m. and Boise State won that first game by a score of 9-3.   Guess I'll have to watch it when it gets added to the Archive section on the MWC streaming channel.

The 2nd game between Boise State and Colorado State will be played tonight (Friday 5-3-24) at 6 p.m. and the third and final game in this three game series will be played Saturday (5-4-24) at noon.  Boise State, with last night's win, is now 11-9 in the MWC softball standings and Colorado State is now 9-10 in the MWC softball standings.

Apparently I made a similar mistake with all three games of the other series this week.  The first game of all of these series this week were played YESTERDAY and I mistakenly listed them as being played on Friday.    Geez.........I'm thinking I need either new glasses or a new brain............or both.

First of all - ALL of the above players are on scholarship.   And the five who have been starters for years are almost certainly on scholarship for more than 50%.

Secondly the rest of the cost is usually done via grants and other funding programs.  As I understand it that is how it has been done for a LONG time.

However the two players that I mentioned above who appear (TO ME) to have eligibility remaining are Karizma Bergesen - who transferred to Boise State last summer and Alycia Flores who has a covid year remaining.  The other four played extensively from their first year in 2021 thru this season so they will have exhausted their NCAA eligibility at the end of this season.

Lastly, in this day of N.I.L., every Boise State athlete has SOME kind of N.I.L. funding coming to them.   I say EVERY because there is a company who put out athletic playing cards for EVERY Boise State athlete available for purchase at local convenience stores all over the Treasure Valley  for ALL Boise State athletes - in all sports.

Grad schools do not do their acceptance until mid summer so if an athlete is graduating they will likely still celebrate as they can’t be certain there is a next year if they are not accepted to the grad school or as in years past go to grad school elsewhere.

And NIL money is completely non existent for any and all mid major softball players unless they individually are TikTok famous and I can’t think of any who are.  NIL money…where the top/top get crazy money and the rest get absolutely nothing but everyone assumes they get something.

What does exist is the N.I.L. program I just mentioned above at Boise State.   Are they going to get rich off it?  Absolutely not but it does result in some $$$$ for the Boise State athletes.  So your characterization of this as "completely non existent" is simply false.  Much like your false statement about grad schools only accepting in the mid summer months.

Mountain West Softball standings thru today's games (05-03-2024)

1. U.N.L.V. - 14-7

2. San Diego State - 14-7 - U.N.L.V. is listed ahead of San Diego State because U.N.L.V. has won both games against San Diego State this season - with 1 more game tomorrow yet to be played.  The winner tomorrow between these two will be the regular season MWC softball champion

3. Nevada - 14-8

4. Fresno State - 12-9

5. Boise State - 12-9 - Fresno State is listed ahead of Boise State because Fresno State beat Boise State in two of their three games this season.

6. Colorado State - 9-11

7. New Mexico - 8-13

8. San Jose State - 6-14

9. Utah State - 5-16

I stand corrected.  They may get enough for a tank of gas or a couple items from the book store.
