GSR committing $1 billion towards entertainment district that would include arena for Nevada basketball. No timeline but intention is for it to be ready for 2026-27 basketball season.

Also expected to include:

* A comprehensive beautification of Grand Bay into a multi-floor hitting bay

* A scenic walking path and captivating water show in the current aquatic driving range

* A new 800-room hotel on the property

* One or more parking garages

* About 300 affordable riverfront residential units

* The potential construction of a hockey practice facility that could pave the way for a minor-league team based in Reno

My guess, basing it on nothing, is that GSR will be building a new arena and Nevada will play in it.  GSR has the land.

Could be, Murray seems to hint at it being a major renovation to Lawlor but a new arena would be crazy. Hoping they could potentially help out with building the indoor practice facility the university needs as well.

Awesome news, it is sounding like they're building an arena.

If true I'll admittedly be a bit sad to see basketball move off campus, and it won't help with student attendance. But it's hard to complain about a $300 million brand new arena.

Also, sounds like it's part of a larger plan. Perhaps including renovation of Lawlor into our IPF?

So many questions, can't wait for the press conference tomorrow. Nevada fans are in dire need of any good news right now.

Reno Sparks area needs a 12,000 seat multi-purpose arena to maybe attract some minor league teams like AHL, G-League, Arena/Indoor football leagues, & whatever else

I'd like to see the VGK ECHL team located in Reno rather than way off in Savannah Georgia

Yeah I’m hoping that part of this plan is for minor league hockey. We used to have the G-League, but they left us for Stockton.

The owner of the GSR also owns the Arizona Coyotes.

That place is a retreaded (multiple times) shitbox.  It hasn't been worth a damn since the 90's.  I loved when they welcomed the burners, and the pool turned thick, and brown.  That was great.

Yeah, teams leaving because the area had no facilities...........wasn't the G-League team playing in some old remodeled bowling stadium thing ?!?!

Boise has the Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL...would be a good tandem with a Reno VGK affiliate and only an hour flight from Vegas to Reno if a player move is needed between ECHL & AHL Henderson

They were playing in the Events Center downtown. The G-League doesn’t need huge arenas.

The G-League Ignite down here plays in the Henderson Arena & that's about 6000 seats for basketball -- Could close off seats higher up

Unfortunately Lawlor isn’t long enough to be an indoor practice facility.

When Lawlor & the Thomas & mack were built, they made the mistake of being for basketball only.............don't think Lawlor has ever had the floor space renovated for other events bigger than a basketball court.............but when the IHL put the Las Vegas Thunder in the T&M in 1990's they removed the concrete steps that went down to almost the floor level to accommodate an ice surface & even then the rink was about 10 ft short of regulation, they shortened the space in the center between the blue lines for the Thunder.

And even after those alterations, there was one end during hockey games where the seats were way up high -- Like in this photo at the right where the BKT ads are....those seats couldn't see that end of the ice

Yeah Nevada has a neutral game against Drake there this season. I believe that Events Center seats 7,000, and has essentially replaced Lawlor for all events and shows other than Nevada athletics.

It would definitely make sense to repurpose Lawlor at this point. It honestly seems like too valuable of a location to use as an IPF. That intersection is basically the front door to campus now.

Could Reno and Tahoe support 2 hockey teams?
