Yeah, there might be some very stupid decisions made here and sounds like some corner cutting.

But we are talking about 5 lives here. And all their families and friends. I don’t think they deserve to die.  If you were in this situation, I would want you to get every chance possible to live for you and your family.  No matter the cost.

The CEO will have deserved to die. The other four will not have deserved it.

Wasn’t quite what I was going for and these aren’t exactly astronauts. Your point stands. We’d all better hope for a Gene Kranz when we find ourselves in deep trouble.

Agree. But I was being more specific. That point in the movie they are trying to find a way to get more oxygen to the crew.

I don’t know how or if they can do it but you said there’s a way to get more oxygen or at least make more time.. If there’s a way, I hope someone figures this out.

Oh, +++++ this guy all to hell.

  1. It's not an American company
  2. There are no US citizens on board.
  3. These idiots are in international waters
  4. The tin can is kept on a Canadian boat in international waters expressly to avoid the 1993 US law that would regulate it.

You’d think they’d at least have a backup they could quickly plug in.

I did a quick search and found a company that sells mil spec controllers to our military, and for what OceanGate needs to control that sub, it wouldn’t cost them much. They should be using 100% mil spec or equivalent for everything in that rig. When I used to race jet skis, I always bought navy mil spec hardware for the non-stock modified parts of the ski. It just blows my mind, and who knows what other corners they cut.

It sounds like they had a complete loss of power, and how does that often happen? Salt water leaks into the electronics. Again, the inside of a stand up jet ski, water easily gets into the engine compartment because there’s openings for air to get to the motor to create max hp. Water also gets in. I rode a lot in ocean races, so salt water is just trying to get into any electronics and cause arcing, or worse. I’d use a mil spec bilge pump unit that would pump out collecting salt water.

And the OceanGate homers are pimping this propaganda that they were on the cutting edge of technology? Give me a break. I found out earlier that the plexiglass window is only rated for 1,300m, not 4,000m. Certainly, it was designed conservatively because it’s survived other trips down to 4,000m. If they designed it with a factor of safety of 3.0, that’s right where they’re using it. Maybe they designed it with a FS = 4.0, but that’s really conservative.

If I designed a sub, I would definitely use a criteria that all electronics inside and out had to be salt waterproof at high pressures using only mil spec. And I’d include a totally independent back up power supply, and a lot of other things.

Yeah, these guys are great libertarians until they need a " bailout."  Privatize gains and socialize losses.   I feel for the people but how many people in Africa could we have helped with the resources expended here?  Are v they going to reimburse the coast guard?  Doubt it.

I’m not at all speaking specifically to this forum, but I can’t help but contrast the attention given to these idiots compared to the hundreds of refugees lost in ferry sinking off Greece. 100 children trapped in the hold for God’s sake.

The US Coast Guard says a debris field was discovered by a remotely operated vehicle near the Titanic submersible search area, and authorities are “evaluating the information,” officials tweeted Thursday.

It is unclear if this debris field is connected to the missing submersible.

The US Coast Guard also has announced a press briefing at 3 p.m. ET.

Could be anything.  Scattered Titanic debris that drifted away from the main wreckage?  Also, a fair bit of the Battle of The Atlantic took place there.  What I've read is that military hydrophones would have absolutely picked up something as loud as an implosion. Then again, it wouldn't be out of character for our military to immediately classify that and keep it secret.

CNN reported that based on what's in the debris field, the chance of life is not good. Reporter was being cautious of that for obvious reasons.
