There are a few schools we've looked at that don't take test scores and don't look at class rank, it just seems a bit odd to me that so much has changed in the 30 years since I was in high school looking at colleges.

30 years ago scholarships went to the top 5-10% in a class. These days it’s def more needs-based. When scholarship applications ask your kid to include Fafsa info and you are in an high income bracket because you own a small business your kid will be “penalized” — not sure that is the right word.

I wonder if the actual number of merit-based scholarships are down, or there is an increase in income-based scholarships that skews the proportional view?

Not sure. And honestly I’m not sure how much time is spent reviewing the applications by the schools and the boards that manage them and how they compare one against the next. That can’t be easy and quite honestly, those who embellish their applications probably benefit from it.

I can’t say that I’m disappointed in the process per se…  because financially I’m in a good position to help my son, but it’s a odd discussion to have with a kid. I tried to explain my perspective on reality of the situation… which is that politics are a factor of course. And that’s how life works. You can either be mad at the system or make the most of what you can control.

A lot has changed in the past 30 years.  In the past couple of years lots of schools have gone test optional and the state schools in CA won't even look at test scores.  MIT went test optional a few years ago and now are going back to requiring test scores because a lot of the students who didn't submit test scores were not faring well.

What does your son want to study?

It shouldn't be like that.... owning a small business doesn't make one wealthy. I work from home and I am able to travel a lot and do my work remotely because of it but that doesn't make me rich. I'm fortunate but not wealthy.

Scholarships should be merit based, not income based

My older one is studying Finance and Econ with focus on data analysis. He’s been interning for several months at local firm as a data analyst. My younger one is pre-dental. We have a good friend who is a dentist and he’s helping him understand that world and he will intern for him. My wife and her family all have pre-med degrees. But that also worries me because as you know if he whiffs on getting into grad school it’s a lot of money to dig yourself out. But also the beauty of instate tuition.

He's a jazz musician and a really really good one. He's already traveling around the country and performing and playing with Grammy nominated artists although yet to perform with a winner.. fingers crossed on that one.

It’s interesting. I thought that was the case too. At the end of the day, my son is better prepared for college finishing top 20 of 400ish students in his class. But when kids who were middling are getting money and he’s not, I know it’s def disappointing. Thankfully we saved.

I wish I had a passion like that out of high school and a parent who supported it. I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do and I retire in 5ish years if all goes well. :)

It's tough because I very rarely get to see him play but he loves it, he plays multiple instruments and I told him many years ago that he could pursue whatever career path made him happiest. Life isn't about money or stature but about living it. That being said having money makes things a little bit easier

I hear you. Life’s easier when you have money… but money doesn’t buy happiness.

I know this sounds elitist, but the higher up the food chain a school is, the easier it is to major in something like music or Middle Eastern Studies and still have a lot of really good job/grad school opportunities.  If your kid can get into Michigan, you can feel pretty confident that he'll have good job and alumni networking opportunities regardless of what he majors in.  You know what Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and MIT all have in common?  None of them even offers undergraduate business majors.

That's what I've told him, he hasn't really shown any interest in USC or UCLA but I was like if you want to work in music take a look at the alumni list of their schools of music. The connections you'll make would be more than enough to at least give you an opportunity.
