grandjean87
Says NYT column w/some extra thoughts: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/23/briefing/ron-desantis.html "DeSantis is expected to formally enter the race as soon as tomorrow. Here are two narratives about his candidacy that could use revising. Narrative 1: DeSantis is toast. Reality: There is an opening for a Trump alternative, whether it’s DeSantis or someone else. Narrative 2: DeSantis’s biggest problem is Donald Trump. Reality: Yes, but he has another problem to confront first."

DeSantis has a few things that will last and Trump doesn't have majority support w/in the party. Biden just has a high supermajority disapproval in this polarized era. RdS's $100+ million war chest goes a looong ways. He can make mistakes, look bad in debates, and reframe his candidacy over and over again. I think he's already done that subtlety w/Ukraine. He's got an attractive wife who will play the Hillary '92 role better and (assuming) not have to deal with an affair scandal. Casey wants First Lady. She's not getting sidetracked even if missing expectations in Iowa. The early default view that a crowded field, and it seems like Christie is also headed into the waters, hands the nomination to Trump is not assured. I don't think any of them fear, or are really intimidated by, Trump any longer. We'll probably see a lot of gang tackling. And, there are ways for the gang to criticize Trump, point out his weaknesses esp. in the general, and avoid alienating most of the humpers. Anyway, I think we'll see a fair amount of unexpected things as the primary race heats up.
UNLV2001
My thinking the order will be 1) trump - his cult is dedicated & won't waver from following their leader 2) Deathsantis - His fascist antics in Florida are popular among the republican base who's main goal is "owning the libs" but probably isn't overly popular with the declining % of registered republicans who still maintain some level of sanity & can see that Deathsantis policies are just culture war battles to own the libs 3) Everyone else - All the rest will be fumbling along in the shadows of trump & Deathsantis feverishly attempting to get any traction that can muster while trump eviscerates 'Desanctimonious' every hour sucking the air out of every news day over the coming 532 days until election day Will be the biggest shit show ever in American politics & something right out of the movie IDIOCRACY <--- There's a good % of the republican base that would vote for any candidate who actually did this during a campaign stop 2

I haven't followed closely (I don't watch the news) so I'm curious. Fascist is hyperbolic, but the guy has taken actions and messaged in a number ways that echo Orban's authoritarianism in Hungary (or a Trump wet dream). The actions against Disney for basically "speech" is concerning (and stoopid). His framing and actions of the hot button sexuality issues are political strategy, but they are concerning regarding 1st Amendment rights. The Florida Leg introducing bills like blogger registrations and banning CRT teaching in higher ed with RdS nodding in politically motivated agreement are also leaning into the authoritarian mold. There's more in many articles. I could link, but an easy Google search will bring plenty to digest. This really isn't new -- use of power to punish and leverage wedge issues. A few years back in NC, iirc, a sitting governor lost election, his party controlled the leg, and in a lame duck session they stripped a handful of powers from the governor's office before the other party took over. But, that's the kind of stuff that has happened across the post-Cold War democracies and seems to be more and more at risk here.
