Automated Home Plate Pitch Calls

Recommended Posts

Sounds like they’re testing it in triple A ball right now and it won’t be long until it hits MLB. I think it’s great as it’ll lead to a lot more consistent ball and strike calls and end arguments over pitch calls.

Watching MLB games it’s crazy how bad pitch calls can be be at times with human umps. The players won’t have to worry about the variation in calls between different umpires that call the strike zone different. It’ll also eliminate catchers trying to frame the pitches to get a call.

Right now they’re working the glitches out. The home plate ump still makes the calls after they’re relayed to him via head set so there’s a slight delay.

Man, as a catcher from little league through high school, yeah framing has been going on for decades. I remember it really catching on in little league in the mid-70’s. I certainly did it because it worked more than it didn’t.

I hate it. I think it removes part of the emotional investment fans have in a game.

You mean screaming at the ump who calls a strike on a pitch six inches out of the strike zone. I’m guessing the players are going to love it as the strike zone will be consistent and not vary from ump to ump as happens currently.

It’ll be similar to automated line calls in tennis which has eliminated arguments.

There is a new MIT study that’s out on AI.  It finds that AI is more harsh on judgement calls than humans who use a bit of discretion.  Not sure what to make of it, but it probably applies here.

Would you be opposed to removing the 3-point line in basketball and having the on-court refs decide how much the shot should be worth in real time?

Considering one team’s “good” call would be the other team’s “bad” call, what would be a “harsh judgement call” on a pitch?

Prepare for the whining on high strikes, the zone is higher than you think it is. Also brings into being  the idea of "any part of the ball through any part of the zone", electronic zones can see that.

With automation MLB can make the strike zone whatever they choose to make it. With computers they can also instantly adjust for the trajectory of the ball that only catches a tiny part of the zone.

IMO thats part of the beauty of the automated call.

MLB umps did it to themselves. Some of them are horrid and it's amazing they don't seem to face any penalty for it.

I like the human aspect of the game but when it's that bad something has to be done. I like it.

As someone who used to be an umpire (many many moons ago) I am all for this.  I can only hope it also makes it to softball as well.

I'm for it because the fans who "think" they can see a pitched ball better than the home plate umpire will no longer be able to scream at the ump about the call of ball or strike.   Well, they CAN, but they'll be screaming at a machine rather than the umpire.  Of course I'm assuming that they are still going to need a home plate umpire for all of the other things that they do during a baseball or softball game.

We can program an AI to apply more discretion down the road if it needs to be.
