IDK, but definitely more than the Save Mart Center, which apparently is dragging your whole athletic department down: https://www.fresnobee.com/sports/college/mountain-west/fresno-state/article274175255.html

If 4 MWC football championships and 1 basketball is down, just imagine what we’ll do when we finally pay it off!

Based on that article, it will still lose $2-3M per year even after paid off in 2031.

i'll admit to being wrong here.  I thought LV would reach the finish line 1st.  Not sure what happened with Wes Edens, but it was the opening SD needed to find their sugar daddy.

Might be that SD has a stadium up & ready day one, while LV would need to build one.........and with the A's / MLB stadium deal possible, maybe MLS thought LV was too tied up at the moment

For me, MLS is about the last on my sports priority list, but I might give soccer a look at the MLS level over the USL team we currently have

Well, I am getting older so my memory may be a bit shot, but didn't SDSU's initiative effectively kill any chance that MLS was going to come to SD?  Only giving a few predatory "investors" a lowball, and a backstabbing-for-the-City deal the only option?

MLS has been more flexible about stadiums recently.  They prefer controlling ancillary revenues which comes with having your own place.  That was the issue involving the stadiums vote(s) in SD.  I suspect, but do not know, that there's a deal between the school and the new ownership group.  Plus, having another billionaire owner always looks good.

The stadium being up and running was likely a decent contributing factor, especially since the University made no secret from the jump that soccer was something that the University was looking to host as part of its civic obligation.  And though I know it benefits paying down the debt service, the University should not make it too expensive and allow the soccer club to enjoy whatever profits it garners, and not screw them over like other stadium owners do to its tenants.

Your memory is off on this one.  SDSU has always wanted MLS and met with them many times about the design of the stadium to make sure it was soccer friendly.

Soccer City marketed their supposed inside track in bringing an MLS franchise here. That was a major appeal, but the public was in no mood to turn the bulk of the 119 acres over to developers. At the same time the public knew it would ultimately develop somehow, and I think most of us (especially the 150k alums) felt that an expansion of the campus, with a stadium and river park, was the most palatable option. The stadium always had to be suitable for soccer given the history here of hosting international games. Just how suitable has been proven by the WSL team, which has smashed all attendance records. In reading the articles from the last few days, the university went the extra mile to reach an agreement with the ownership group and the league.

I know.  It was a joke.  I thought the Kermit "but that's none of my business" gif would have made that clear.  Most SoccerCity and anti-SDSU folks were adamant that only SoccerCity would get MLS here.

I guess the bits don't always work.  Back to the writing room...

JMO, but the key was probably that the development of a lot of the site is still open-ended (besides park space) and this will likely provide the MLS club/ownership with the revenue opportunities to make up for not owning the whole thing themselves. A lot of opportunity to make money off that parcel still.

Nah it’s me. I interpret stuff too literally often times.
