Their season runs into October. They’ll need soccer lines on the grass, and it’ll get torn up.

If that were an issue, San Diego wouldnt even be in the running for a franchise.  Houston does ok.  They share their stadium with Texas Southern's football team.

Looks like it's going to be done on a lease as opposed to an equity partnership so the possibility exists that they will open their own building sometime in the future. The Mansour group runs youth football academies in multiple spots around the world and they plan to open one up here. Pretty exciting time to be a San Diegan. IMO, it will be the SD Legion Loyal moving up to MLS.  It's hard to ignore a soccer HOF'er when he's already here and operating a successful club.

You want a rugby team joining MLS?  Interesting...

Supposedly SJSU had an opportunity to get a free, brand new MLS stadium on campus before Avaya was eventually built. Those soccer lines were such a big deal, that they opted to play in a shitty half stadium instead.

San Diego Legion rugby team plays there and they haven't torn it up. If rugby players haven't torn it up, soccer players won't either. The field will be fine.

It has more to do with the timing of rainy weather than anything else. You can tear up a wet field in short order.

The San Diego Wave of the WSL started their season there in September of 2022 and so overlapped with most of the football season. I took my 3-year-old grandson to see Monster trucks there a few months ago. I think the field will be ok.

From the reports I've read and listened to it seems unlikely the Loyal will be moving up.

Your administration is the reason why our basketball league is bleeding out currently. If you didn't insist on San Jose being in the MWC, so you guys would have someone that votes similar to SDSU, every team in the MWC wouldn't have to play 2 games vs. a team with a 330 RPI ranking EVERY season.

yeah, it would be unusual.  When Orlando joined MLS, they shut down their USL team (which moved to Louisville) and started fresh in MLS with the same ownership group.  With this being a completely different group they'll want to hire their own people.

We had previously shared with the Earthquakes at Spartan Stadium. The issue is that Lew Wolff wanted to build the stadium in exchange for the land. We would have been a tenant beholden to them and would have had limited revenue opportunities in a stadium designed with soccer in mind and at sub-20k capacity (yes, I get the irony now given the current state of CEFCU, but at least we own the place and are making our own decisions).

Plus turning over state university land to an outside private entity would entail jumping through a lot of hoops at the state level. It’s not even a decision SJSU could make on their own even if they had wanted to.

How much profit is there if over half the people at the game got in for free?
