Debt Ceiling

Recommended Posts

Both sides are being ridiculous on this.

Republicans we need to raise the debt ceiling. The Democrats will never go for draconian cuts to social programs. Do something different.

Democrats- Its ok to cut spending, and not raise taxes. Get yo ass to the negotiating table and work out some cuts with McCarthy.

Both sides are more interested in the political theater rather than being productive on this.

It seems both sides are willing to risk another serious recession in order to score Political points.

OTH, if this does collapse, The Budget Hawk R's get their wish by default. They really have little incentive to negotiate. They are all in safe Districts, are Recession proof, and somehow will manage to pin it on the Dems in 2024.

Win - win for the GQP.

I am fine with modest tax increases. Is it ever ok to cut spending, not just decrease the rate of increase, but actual cuts to spending across the board?

We need to bring back PAYGO. If additional spending is authorized, you have to cut spending somewhere else to pay for it.

PAYGO works as long as the opposite is true. If you are going to cut taxes, you have to be required to cut spending too. It only seems to go one way. Too many times we have cut revenue (frequently by shifting burdens which never produces the same revenue) and not give the associated spending cut because the revenue cuts were smoke and mirrors (according to the tax cutters). The whole budgeting process is extremely politicized, but Congress gonna Congress.

No one side is being stupid and immature.

I have no problem with pushing for spending cuts.  That process is called the appropriations process.   Hold shit up in that process where it belongs.

Stopping the debt ceiling is like teenagers going to a restaurant and performing a dine and dash. Republican now don’t want to pay for spending they appropriated under Trump.   We did 14 speakers votes because Republicans wanted to follow regular order and the first thing they do is violate regular order.

Historically there debt ceiling votes are just routine & don't get much coverage............it's the GOP led House when a Dem is president that has made these votes a clown show (since Obama got in office)

Don't think the GOP won't tank the economy just to ding Biden (or name future Dem President here)

https://bgrdc.com/history-of-debt-limit-and-why-it-matters/

Except for about a year during 1835–1836, the United States has continuously had a fluctuating public debt. The national debt has increased under every presidential administration since Herbert Hoover. The United States has raised its debt ceiling at least 90 times in the 20th century. It has never been reduced. Since 1962 until 2011, the debt ceiling was raised 74 times, including 18 times under former President Ronald Reagan, eight times under former President Bill Clinton, seven times under former President George W. Bush, and five times under former President Barack Obama. From 2001, Congress has raised the debt ceiling 14 times from 2001 to 2016. The debt ceiling was raised roughly a total of $5.4 billion during President George W. Bush’s tenure, and it was raised roughly a total of $6.5 during President Obama’s tenure.

Quit repeating what the team says you are supposed to say, you and everybody else who does this only enables silly political theatre when we actually need compromise.

BOTH sides are being childish and ridiculous. It is not hard to work something out, but people like you make it worthwhile to employ political grandstanding.

The Democrats can't cut anything , anywhere. Not one penny of the federal budget. Can't sit down and talk with the Mccarthy and work out something.

Your party is being childish

Nevermind, all you know how to do is repeat memes

Bob, BOB........appears you are having a difficult time with reality -- Take some time off, grab a nap, rest, watch some birds, take a stroll along the Boise River........something easy & restful to calm your shattered nerves

This isn't where you negotiate spending.

Yeah but other than now nobody ever will.  So just keep debt on full speed ahead then. We will worry about it later when the market forces us into default.

You need to learn how Congress actually works.

It is not unusual for one party  to hold up one thing to try to gain something else. That is how congress has always worked dummy
