U.S. officials confirmed that previous balloon incidents involving China occurred near Hawaii and Guam last year.

In February 2022, a balloon appeared to be stationary in international waters northwest of Kauai, Hawaii, the officials said.

The Hawaii incident came shortly after a similar incident that year near Guam, according to one of the officials.

Yes.  This is an unprecedented violation of our Air Space.  @RSF has been on a stupid binge lately though.

Statement claims several years.  Without further info its impossible to know how many years, and which administrations.  Leaving all into question.

That's all I'm pointing out.  Honestly, I'm not sure how much can be done - shooting them down brings it's own risks.  The idea of something the size of 3 buses falling 10 miles seems problematic.  I'm guessing any responses would be more technological in nature - masking/blocking in some way.

It gives me a headache just trying to think down to your level

Stay classy, San Diego.  I'm not going to be drawn into your recent extended rant.

Again, have a nice day.

One more thought before I step away from this quagmire....

Is nobody curious about the timing?  We hear about a Chinese balloon just as SecState Blinken is about to go to China (a trip now postponed)?  Is China trying to be provocative, or did the US go public in an effort to embarass China?  Either is possible.  And it strains credibility to think that this is an isolated incident.  Also worth noting that the balloon went thru Alaska and Canada, but we didnt hear about until it reached the lower 48.  The question is why we didnt hear about it earlier - Alaska also being US airspace.

shut up..."unprecedented"?

you have no way of knowing this

Yes, the publicity is unprecedented.  There has never been a publicly acknowledged violation of our air space to this extent since Pearl Harbor.  It simply has not happened that I can find.  Enlighten me otherwise or you can likewise shut up.

you didn't say the "publicity" is unprecedented, you said the event...complete unsubstantiated hyperbole

you've been going there a lot lately...maybe you should head out and go fishing

Link anything showing something similar in the past.  Link it.  You think if during the cold war our air space was violated it would not have been news?  LMFAO.  You ever hear of Sputnik?

I didn't even criticize Biden, I just asked what his response would be?  Yes, to public knowledge this is absolutely unprecedented.  100%.  Without a doubt.

Keep up or shut up.  Give me a link showing something similar has happened in recent history.  Do that and I will acknowledge it and own up to being wrong.

Your "shut up" response seems to be a reaction to me completely tearing to shreds the points you liked in the COVID response thread debate.

The administration was trying to keep it a secret so as not to screw up Blinken’s trip. Their hand was forced when local media broke the news of its sighting.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-04/from-china-to-big-sky-the-balloon-that-unnerved-the-white-house?utm_source=website&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=mobile_web_share

This account of how a balloon burst diplomacy just as Secretary of State Antony Blinken was set to travel to China and meet with President Xi Jinping is based on conversations with several officials briefed on the matter who asked to stay anonymous to discuss intelligence matters.

As it turns out, US authorities were well aware of the unidentified object that had entered American airspace on Jan. 28, that had then left and re-entered over North Idaho on Tuesday. But with such a high-profile trip at stake, keeping it on the down-low was key…

On Thursday afternoon, the Billings Gazette, a local Montana paper, published a photo of the balloon – meaning it was only a matter of time until national media would pick up on the report and the Biden administration would have to face questions

US officials, who had spent hours debating whether Blinken should scrap a long-planned trip to Beijing, finally felt they had no choice but to postpone the first high-level US visit to China in five years. A delay was not a cancellation. It sent a signal that the US had no desire to escalate matters.

The sentiment among those in the room was that the trip wasn’t worth the potential domestic political costs of going, given that Blinken’s talks in China were not expected to yield much in the first place.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

Damn, it was bad enough when the Middle Kingdom just had military satellites.

The "spy balloon" won't get them much more information if any than they already had I can not imagine.

It's the  fact it is a giant +++++ you sign of disrespect to violate American Airspace so blatantly.

A message in kind needs to be sent back and I bet the Biden administration is thinking about what that is.

Crazy a simple question of "how will Biden react" caused a melt down from posters.  Prolly because I touched them in their no no places in the other thread and this is their way of coping.
