UNLV at Colorado State

Rebels we’re good tonight. Hall and Nowell make a huge difference off the bench. Hall gives them 5 more fouls in the paint defensively in addition to his scoring.  Rams continued their recent trend of fractured play.

Good road win. Keep stacking the wins.

15-7 isn’t terrible. 3 of the next 4 games are winnable. Unlv could finish the season strong and roll into the MWC tournament as a dark horse.

Postseason play is definitely still attainable as is finishing with an improved record from last year. Impressive considering the strength of the conference.

The UNLV men's basketball team rolled to its third straight victory with an 83-71 win at Colorado State Tuesday night.

Five Runnin' Rebel players scored in double figures and the bench contributed 33 points. EJ Harkless led UNLV (15-7 overall, 4-6 Mountain West) with 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting, also contributing five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Keshon Gilbert added 16 points on 6 of 8 from the field, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers, with five rebounds and two steals, while Luis Rodriguez and Justin Webster each scored 11 points. Keyshawn Hall scored 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting, including 2 of 3 on 3-pointers.

Colorado State (10-13, 2-8) had four players in double figures, each scoring at least 17. Isaiah Stevens, who scored 33 points in CSU's win at UNLV earlier this month, led the Rams with 18 points on just 5 of 11 from the field. He dished out a game-high seven assists.

BIG LEAD: UNLV led 39-30 at the half and increased it to as many as 22 points with 7:45 left to play. CSU cut its deficit to eight points with 1:39 to go but would get no closer.

SECOND-HALF SHOOTING: After shooting 43.2% (16 of 37) in the first half, UNLV made 13 of 24 after halftime to shoot 54.2% over the final 20 minutes.

QUOTABLE: "We have a little more confidence in the locker room right now. We had a tough two-week stretch and now we have had a good week-and-a-half stretch. Guys are feeling good and we know we are a good team. We are going to make good things happen and right now they are having fun doing it. They are guarding their tails off and making plays for each other, and it is just fun to watch them out there having fun." - UNLV head coach Kevin Kruger.

OTHER NOTES:
- Luis Rodriguez, who had started each of the season's first 19 games and missed the last two because of injury, came off the bench against the Rams. In addition to his 11 points, he led UNLV in rebounds with six and also tallied two steals.
- Jordan McCabe sat out the game because of injury.
- Shane Nowell made 2 of 3 3-pointers and has now shot 6 of 10 from behind the arc in his last three games combined.
- UNLV improved its advantage in the all-time series vs. CSU to 44-20 and is now 13-10 in games played in Fort Collins. The Runnin' Rebels have won two in a row at Moby Arena.
- UNLV shot 11 of 27 on 3-pointers for 40.7% and made 29 of 61 shots overall to shoot 47.5%.
- UNLV held CSU to just 5 of 17 3-pointers (29.4%). The Rams came into the game ranked second in the MW in 3-point shooting at 36.4%.
- UNLV out-rebounded CSU 36-32, led in points off turnovers 19-11, second-chance points 20-6 and fastbreak points 14-6.
- CSU's bench only managed to score two points.
- UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,183 straight games.

NEXT FOR THE RUNNIN' REBELS: UNLV will return home to the Thomas & Mack Center to host Fresno State on Friday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m.

Reserves deliver as UNLV basketball wins third straight

https://lasvegassun.com/news/2023/jan/31/reserves-deliver-as-unlv-basketball-wins-third-str/

As UNLV enters the stretch run of the 2022-23 season, it’s safe to say this is a team that plays better when it plays deeper.

That was apparent on Tuesday, when strong contributions from the reserve unit propelled the Scarlet and Gray to an 83-71 victory at Colorado State.

Luis Rodriguez led the subs with 11 points, and the team’s four bench players combined for 33 points and five 3-pointers. Colorado State, by comparison, got just two points from its bench.

All of a sudden, UNLV is hot again, riding a three-game winning streak and sitting just a half-game out of sixth place in the Mountain West standings. The Scarlet and Gray led by nine at halftime, upped their advantage to 22 points midway through the second half and cruised to the final buzzer.

There have been times this season when head coach Kevin Kruger has appeared reluctant to go to the bench, like when they managed just eight points in a loss to San Diego State on Dec. 31. But the emergence of young players like Shane Nowell and Keyshawn Hall has given Kruger additional options, and Tuesday’s performance should only bolster his confidence in the reserves.

Nowell, who scored six points in 22 minutes, said UNLV’s second-stringers have been locking into their roles as of late.

“We’ve been keying in and really focusing in on our bench and making our contribution when we come in,” he said.

Nowell once again gave UNLV a sizable spark. The 6-foot-6 lefty knocked in 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and has now made 6-of-10 from 3-point range over the past three games, with a pair of long-distance makes in each contest.

Rodriguez started the first 19 games of the season before an injury sidelined him for the last two contests. He made his return to action at CSU and served to lengthen UNLV’s bench, posting 11 points, six rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes.

Freshman Keyshawn Hall continued his late-season breakout with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in 10 minutes. And senior center David Muoka, who lost his starting job two weeks ago, was a force off the bench with six points, five rebounds and a block in 15 minutes.

E.J. Harkless led UNLV with 17 points and also chipped in five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Keshon Gilbert went for 16 points while making 4-of-6 from 3-point range.

Harkless isn’t surprised to see the bench trending upward at this point in the season.

“Man, they be killing us in practice some days,” Harkless said. “I know they weren’t playing much in the beginning [of the year], so to come in and give us that lift off the bench, that was excellent tonight. On the road, that’s really tough to do.”

The starters did their job as well. Eli Parquet and Gilbert were the main men tasked with defending Colorado State leading scorer Isaiah Stevens, who killed UNLV with a 33-point explosion on Jan. 14, and they executed.

Stevens hit his average with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting, but most of his damage came long after the game had been decided.

“We held him to his average, which, depending on how you look at it, I thought it was great,” Kruger said of the plan to defend Stevens. “I thought the guys worked their tails off. I thought they made him work for points and did a really good job there and kept him out of playmaking situations.”

UNLV is now 15-7 overall and 4-6 in the Mountain West, with a winnable home game on Friday against Fresno State.

With the bench surging, Nowell thinks UNLV is hitting its stride at the right time.

“We’re just on a roll,” Nowell said. “We’re really focused, especially in practice. Coach is really pulling us together and we’re really playing as a collective group right now. It’s really good basketball.”

Gotta say it was fun watching Keyshawn Hall use his 6'7 250 frame to bully guys in the paint and also step back for 3s against CSU. He looked a bit like Roddy out there minus the whining and 15 trips to the FT line.

All I know is they better do whatever they have to do to keep Parquet on the floor and healthy.  He is what makes this team.  Great win.  Nice to avenge one of the home losses.  Keep your head down and keep grinding Rebels.

Eight games left in MWC play

VS Fresno State - WIN

AT Wyoming - WIN

AT SDSU - LOSS

VS SJSU - WIN

AT Boise St - LOSS

VS Air Force - WIN

VS Utah St - WIN

AT UNR - LOSS

Can see 4 "should be wins" remaining and if UNLV can go into the PIT & beat UNM, then it's possible UNLV might get a win at BSU or UNR

The wins listed above would get UNLV to 9-9 in MWC play.........hold those & steal one or two from SDSU, UNR & BSU and 10/11 wins could be had -- If UNLV hadn't boned the CSU game & the ho-hum effort at SJSU / USU ........UNLV could have potentially had 10-13 MWC wins barring any other stubbed toes
