  1. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2018/10/31/gm-buyouts/1832705002/ "General Motors is offering voluntary buyouts to 18,000 salaried workers, acknowledging Wednesday that if it does not get enough takers, it may consider layoffs in early 2019." "The move is part of GM's cost-cutting plans, which include a $6.5 billion target for 2018. The savings from the job cuts will not benefit GM until 2019, Morrissey said." "GM, which reported good third-quarter results, will continue recruiting and hiring workers needed for next-generation transportation, Morrissey said." "“That is the right thing to do for the business, but it will be a big bone of contention from those pushed out or terminated for lack of the needed skills,” said Jon Gabrielsen of J.T. Gabrielsen Consulting. Gabrielsen is a market economist who advises automakers and auto suppliers. " --------------------------- This is a great example of the degeneration of business from the "we're a family" mentality to "employees are disposable cogs" mentality of today, in my opinion. I think this is another very troubling trend. I've read that many big companies have been lamenting about the fleeting nature of young workers, and the costs involved with training new employees every few years because of it. This business mentality is definitely part of the problem. When you don't value employees and instead cap wages at what they negotiate on hiring, and add in these kind of moves... It makes you wonder why they are surprised. It also makes me wonder just who these aholes advising them are, and where they are coming from.
