I agree that with your conclusion that when you consider all the facts that UTEP makes sense.  Although the present status of the Sun Bowl game doesn't involve UTEP's conference affiliate the long term the tradition of that game would be great to add to the Mountain West's affiliation just like the Holiday Bowl.

Personally I think if the MW acce[ts UTEP then  New Mexico State (a land grant instituiton like OSU, WSU, USU, Wyoming, Hawaii, Nevada, and Colorado State) is the next best because at sixteen schools in a 2 permanent with six rotating games scheduling structure to deal with the Lobos and UTEP you either have to split up Air Force, Colorado State and Wyoming, make Hawai'i the annual rivalry, or accept New Mexico State.

New Mexico State is the least bad option of all the potential 16th members.

Personally I think staying in the mountain time zone makes the most sense for the MW and so all the other potential schools on Central time just don't make logistical sense.

Coastal folks are always in love with shoving UTEP and NMSU down the throats of the Mountain folks.  Just stop.  We don't want 'em.  UTEP may be technically in Texas, but face it, they're in New Mexico.  NMSU is definitely in New Mexico.  Have you looked at New Mexico demographics lately?  UNM handles that state just fine, no need to add more mouths down there.  I have more interest in Scott City CC than those two.

  2. Yes, they were talking about SDSU prior to last year, and I heard nothing but praise during their Natty attempt.  Did not see SDSU as legitimately on the same level as UConn, but were excited about them and it's growing.

We're talking about the face of MWC BB, not the face of college BB overall.  SDSU represents and  we are all bringing cred.  Just gotta' keep it up.

I've been keeping an eye on Texas State a long time and agree they have a lot of potential.  Moreover they have a good young football coach in G.J. Kinne, who was UH's offensive coordinator in 2020 (one of the few strong performers on Todd Graham's staff) and subsequently engineered surprisingly fast turnarounds at both UIW and Texas State.

If it weren't possible to attract any AAC schools into an expanded MWC, I think a UTEP + Texas State pairing would be the best fallback option.

Texas State I'm good with.  If we need two Texas schools to make it work then get UTSA, not UTEP.

Still firm that the less impressive (media wise) schools from Montana would be a better add.  Rabid fanbases that would really step up if they went MWC.

Isn't UTEP much more of a rival with NM State than UNM?

Yes.  It's been quite a while but at one time the UNM prez (or maybe AD) stated that with all due respect to UTEP, they weren't a good add for the MWC.

Well, what I am mostly talking about are the East Coast  writers that don't even watch MWC basketball.

They watch SDSU.  Believe me, they watch SDSU.  The talking heads like to prattle on about the MWC (at least this last season), and they talk SDSU, USU, CSU, UNM, etc.  I've heard them mention that even UNLV can be dangerous.

Not the face of the conference anymore.  That lies in San Diego.

You can say what you want, but if we were a one seed, we’d be seen as a much stronger conference.

With rumors of Richard Pitino turning down Louisville, Steve Alford is looking like he's bunkering down in Reno.

This speaks volumes about MWC basketball. The brand is strong and these coaches are choosing to stay. A job to watch is USC - where Andy Enfield is leaving to take the SMU job. Would they look at an MWC coach? I don't think so.

Holding on to our coaches is paramount as the MWC looks to take the next step. There is so much growth potential since UNLV is still climbing into that top tier. UNLV is the position that the national media are looking most closely at as a face of the conference. If Kruger takes another step next year (in a big way), and the MWC holds up like it did this year, I believe the MWC will get the respect necessary to improve everyone's seed line across the board.

The Alford Plea = "I got your back, UNLV." He needs UNLV and he knows it; and I believe he knows what's coming. The Rebels are back, baby.

Yeah, totally agree.  UNLV is the face of the conference.  Gimme a break.

If the conference was being really ambitious the targets would be UTEP, UTSA, North Texas, Rice, Memphis, and Tulane.

That would create a strong 20-member G5 superconference with two conference-sized divisions.

East: Wyoming, CSU, Air Force, New Mexico, UTEP, UTSA, North Texas, Rice, Memphis, Tulane

West: WSU, OSU, Boise State, Utah State, Nevada, UNLV, SJSU, Fresno State, SDSU, Hawaii

There would be no crossover competition in football.  The two division champions would play for the conference title in what would effectively be a play-in game to the CFP most seasons.

In non-football sports there would be very limited crossover competition, which would minimize travel costs.

But to your point, it would depend on the new TV deal.  Some network would need to buy into the concept and be willing to pay out at least $8 million per school per year.  That’s probably a reach given all the unknowns in the current environment.

Not liking that split or even necessarily those additions.  I'd much prefer to keep USU in a division with CSU and Wyoming.  I realize it's small time thinking, but I'd also prefer the Montana schools over Memphis and Tulane.  Good additions, but Texas is about as far east as I want to go.  I feel like we need to maintain some regionality.

A Warbow says, that's a correct description of the arrangement.  However the annual payout from PPV to UH no longer exceeds the average MWC TV payout.  The past few years the PPV payout has been a bit over $3 million whereas the MWC TV payout per school has been around $4 million.  Therefore UH has been receiving a small equalization payment from the MWC of less than $1 million.  UH also receives roughly $1.5 million in CFP money annually from the MWC, so including that the total amount UH is earning annually from PPV and the MWC combined is between $5 million and $6 million.

Also while it's true that UH PPV games aren't televised on the Mainland, they are streamed for free, albeit on the Team1 Sports app which only works on smartphones and tablets.

Exactly.  I'm fine with Hawaii being part of the MWC TV revenue, but only if they're part of the MWC TV broadcast package.  Gonna' be a lot of streaming going on in the future.  I hope I'm not paying for one app to watch the rest of MWC football, and paying for another to see Hawaii games.

Less of a problem honestly than the streaming quality.  Currently each home school produces the game for TheMWC TV app, much like the home school does the production for ESPN+.  In both cases there is some almost unwatchable content out there.  I don't care about ESPN+ and hope we don't end up there, but regardless of the app every school in the MWC needs to step up their production quality.  Some more than others, but none of us are doing it the level we should be.  That needs to be addressed in any new conference set up when we get there.

You’re correct but as it stands now, Hawaii has been getting more from the spectrum deal which includes BE sports.

I think PPV is on its last legs, it has hurt Hawaii attendance more than poor performance.

The next TV deal will be extremely heavy on streaming instead of TV anyway.  Streaming, realignment...buckle up.  Nothing is going to look the same.

I can see Hawaii spitting the Spectrum TV contract into 2 different contracts, one for MWC sports and the other for Big West sports. Right now our Big West sports are getting the shaft as it’s part of the overall contract. Which means the MWC is benefiting from the spectrum contract right now as Hawaii spectrum contracts includes ALL sports.

By spitting the contract into 2 separate contracts Hawaii would probably then opt to receive their MWC portion of its TV deal instead of the spectrum football portion and still collect on the BW portion. Right now Hawaii has opted to receive the spectrum TV monies (which includes BW sports) instead of a MWC TV deal share.

If they do that I don’t foresee any PPV football games being aired.

Actually, as I understand it, Hawaii gets the PPV $$, plus a MWC share.  If the PPV doesn't come to as much income as the rest of the conference gets, the MWC makes up the difference.  If the PPV exceeds the general MWC share, Hawaii keeps it all.  I'd be fine with this if games were televised in mainland MWC regions, but they're not.

    Hearing rumors…

Are you guys ready to welcome Hawaii as a full member of the MWC?

Not really.  I like Hawaii, and would love to see their VB in the conference, but the travel.  Yes, it's a real issue.  Maybe not for the coastal schools so much, but ex-CSU AD's have made a point of complaining about the Hawaii travel for football.  Jack Graham stated that it wasn't fair to the students and he hated it.  I don't see it getting better when you throw in BB, VB, Softball, Track, etc.  Too much travel in the AAC was part of what led to CSU turning their offer down, Hawaii certainly isn't closer.

  13. Dutch is the best out there right now, but there's no telling if he could be where he is without the groundwork Fish laid (from the ground up).  Gotta' go with Steve Fisher.  The best this conference has seen.  MWC coaches know that he set the standard, the conference is only better because they strive to achieve that standard.

You’re an idiot. You don’t get to define what a local market is. The state of Utah is not a local market. 🤣🤣 The state of BYU is part of their regional market.

I was just in the State of BYU last week.  Didn't get a chance to meet the governor or anything, but it's kind of a nice state.  A little crowded, but nice people and decent parks, etc.  Just downstream from a really beautiful out-of-state canyon.

    Wim more. I guess

Yes, CSU and the Aztecs scheduled and played well OOC hence their high rating in January. I guess finishing seventh didn't help their cause.

I am actually stunned that SUDS got a #5 seed and a doable path to the Sweet 16. Finishing four and four with two wins against bottom feeders should have out them on the six line.

I think the route to the top in the MWC is tougher than you give it credit for, for various reasons.

Back to the seedings.  Michigan State was given extra credit by the committee (per the chair) for gaining such good Quad 2 wins in conference.  The MWC was downgraded (per the committee chair) for racking up so many Q1 wins in conference.  WTF?

Multiple teams were praised in interviews for their OOC play and that reason was given for a higher seeding.  I know CSU struggled in conference on the road, but who had a better OOC?  Not many.  Not that we should have been a high seed, but if OOC really mattered, why the play in game?

The MWC was punished for being the MWC and forcing the committee to put 6 teams in.  Yeah, getting 6 teams in is a pretty solid accomplishment in an 11 team league, but it feels like we pissed off the committee for making them do it.
