That would be absolutely crazy. The two teams that achieved the highest rankings would both be Wednesday participants.

Yeah, it's been a spectacular and bizzaro season. Doubt anyone had teams that were in the top-25 for big chunks of the season as the #6 and #7 seeds.

I thought 2013 was probably going to be the pinnacle for MWC BB...but this season has blown 2013 away.

Sorry 5-1 not 6-1. They swept boise in 20/21 (both games @ SDSU).

Nope, it is 6 of last 7. Boise beat SDSU 3× in 21-22, they split last year, and Boise swept this year.

  3. Very important win. Boise has looked damn impressive since their bye. They've been playing the bottom of the conference, but they're just completely taking those teams apart right now. Should get another big metrics boost after tonight's win.

Degenhart also needs more run for MWCPOY. That dude has been borderline phenomenal the last few weeks.

  4. Man, this is probably one of the most surprising results in the history of MWC basketball. Not sure how UNLV comes back from this. That was a soul crushing home beat down to a very mediocre team.

Yikes 4th quarter. Typical Leon no-depth  collapse?

We completely flat lined when Fresno went to the junk zones on defense. Totally destroyed the offensive rhythm. Very fortunate to escape with a dub in this one. Hopefully Leon incorporates more zone offense at practice because what happened tonight ain't it.

The Aztecs missed numerous front ends in one and one situations. Missed a load of layups.

    Congrats to Boise.

They were good enough to overcome a meh Aztec performance.

I thought Boise played pretty meh for most of the game too with lots of missed FT's and layups. Having our Big 3, Degenhart, Agbo, and Rice combine for only 26 points but still control the majority of the game is a huge sign of progress for us.

Roddie Anderson was the real difference in this one. The Aztecs gameplan obviously didn't do much to account for him offensively and it ended up burning them.

Dang. 27-24 at half. I'd be shocked if CSU doesn't come back and win...but still not a good look even letting AFA hang close, especially at home. Potential season killer if they were to lose this one.

  8. Nevada obviously has a big advantage playing at home, but I'll be surprised if they cover -6.5. I expect an awesome college basketball game tonight. I'm anticipating something similar to last year's game in Reno with multiple lead changes and the game being decided in the final minute.

  9. I'm not sure what to think about CSU after their last two games. I think USU and Boise both might be NCAAT teams, but it's still hard to tell how good anyone is right now. I doubt that more than 1-2 teams will get W's in Logan or Boise this year, so losing both shouldn't have been unexpected, but I also think the Rams aren't close to the juggernaut some portrayed them to be. They're good, and will be very hard to beat at home, but I don't see them winning more than 3-4 road games.

I also think Boise has been hugely underestimated by people on this board. They are as good or better than anyone else in the conference at the 2 through 5 positions (collectively). If they get just average PG play, they are going to be hard to beat.

No one in the league besides SDSU has a big man as dominant as Great Osobor. He is very much like Graham Ike and is going to cause a lot of problems for teams in conference.

They also have solid guard play and share the ball real well. Nevada has the advantage in the back court with Blackshear and Lucas, but they have no one to deal with Osobor inside.

O'Mar Stanley is at least as good as Osobor right now and has a much higher ceiling. He's not quite at Ledee's level yet, but he has turned the corner in the last couple weeks and is now destroying teams. 30 and 11 tonight against Joser and averaging 24.3 over last 3 games. He and Degenhart will bludgeon most MWC teams in the post this year.

  11. Boise has played the most difficult overall schedule in the MWC so far. 6 straight Ken Pom top-100 teams with 5 of those in the top-70. Only one of those games was at home.

They have looked pretty crappy so far, but a lot of that can be attributed to the quality of teams they've been playing. Leon's recent teams have all started really slow, then started rolling midway through the OOC schedule. That's where we are right now, so we'll see if that continues this season.

Bottom line is they already have 3 Quad 2 wins and no losses lower than high Q2 (based off Pom ratings), so despite looking like crap, their resume is probably better than everyone in the MWC other than CSU.

Still not very impressed with this Boise team but think they have potential. Don’t look as good as last 2 years’ teams and I don’t see any depth. Really need to figure out the rotation (less Max) but competition too tough to test much out.

Play Butler (kenpom #67) on Sunday at 4 eastern.

Honestly, we are way ahead of how we've looked in early OOC during the previous two years...and both those seasons turned out pretty decent. We already have 2 top-100 wins in Pom and the two losses are to top-50 Pom teams. If we can find a way to beat Butler, I think we are in fantastic shape moving forward.

Is SJSU out of the running for the MW championship game even if they beat UNLV tomorrow?

Confused Steve Brule GIF by MOODMAN

I think SJSU is going to need to put a Fresno game type beatdown on UNLV tomorrow to have a chance of getting ahead of BSU in the computers...that's definitely possible, but not very probable.

  14. 3-point shooting and perimeter D will be key in this one. After watching Clemson during their tournament last week, I think these teams are pretty evenly matched. Whoever makes more 3's will probably win it. Clemson has a couple snipers who can really shoot it, so keeping those guys in check will be huge.

BSU has struggled from 3 early this season, only shooting 20% through the first two games. If they can improve their 3-point shooting to around 40% against Clemson, I think there is a really good chance they can pull an upset. BSU is due to have a 40%+ shooting game from 3, so I'm hoping it happens Sunday.

This is a low risk/high reward, early season Q1 road opportunity for BSU. If it was played at a neutral site I would be very confident. Having to travel 2,000 miles to play a road game makes it much more difficult...but I'm expecting this game to go down to the wire with Boise having a chance to win it late.

I think Rice will go with those two at PG for awhile and if they become a detriment he’ll pull Chris Lockett, who was the Louisiana POY off redshirt. Part of Anderson’s problem is he’s still trying to learn Boise States offense.

Naw man, that isn't happening. Only chance Lockett gets his RS pulled is if both Anderson and Whiting are out with injuries for an extended period at the same time...which would be very bad.

I think Andre Miller is a dumb comp for Blackshear. Miller was all of 6’2” and much more of a distributor than Blackshear. Blackshear is a big, powerful lead guard who scores at the rim effectively.

Completely agree. Kinda weird anyone would make a comparison between those two IMO...other than them both being guards and good basketball players.

And it's the first real game.  And Leon went nuts with subs early on trying to find the right 5.  He's still not got it as is the norm with him when he gets a bunch of new guys.  Every game they'll get better as he tightens the minutes for the bench and find the ones who work best together.

Still don't see a PG that comes close to Shaver.  Lots of work to do there.

It's not easy to replace a guy like Shaver. I do think Roddie will get much better at PG as he gains experience in our system. You can tell he's still feeling out his role right now. I think you'll see his offensive production slowly increase throughout the season.

  18. There are still so many possible scenarios for the CG. I'm not even going to try and wrap my head around it until after next week's results. That will provide a little more clarity...but I have a feeling there will still be a bunch of scenarios in play for the final weekend.
