  1. It really predates smart phones and social media, although those two may have increased the behavior. Robert Putnam in his 2000 book "Bowling Alone" showed the decline in social engagement over several decades using numbers like the decline in membership in many civic and volunteer organizations. He used the decline in bowling league participation vs the number engaging in the sport to come up with the title. It has been a while since I read the book. Putnam explored several theories about the cause such as a loss of trust, time pressures, etc. But he did point to technology (back then television and the early internet) as one big driver of people moving away from community interaction.
  2. The new attempt to make money. In a collaboration with Lee Greenwood, this KJV includes the lyrics to the song, copies of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and more.
  3. Never let a tragedy go to waste, either in politics or among conspiracy theorists.
  4. It happened at 1:30am instead of something like 7:30am during rush hour. Still a tragedy for those on the bridge at that moment but it could have been much larger loss of life. RIP to those lost.
  5. Just like a magician, politicians on both sides always say look over here not over there. It depends upon how many people are willing to be like Dorothy in Oz and look behind both party's curtains. Then those people can decide what they want to choose.
  6. The GOP seems determined to grab hold of every political third rail this election year. First abortion now Social Security.
  7. I am not surprised at these names. Everyone else in the House on both sides voted yes.
  8. He is 61 years old. Near the start of the age range where you have to pay attention and stop yourself when you start into Back in the old days.
  9. The media should be able to give the UNLV game some interest just with that connection.
  10. Shasta County/Redding has been a California hotbed of far-right conspiracies and politics. Election fraud, vaccines, etc. In October, the far-right dominated Board of Supervisors appointed to the county mosquito abatement district a far-right activist who said before being appointed that mosquitoes were “flying syringes that will mass vaccinate the population.” Mosquitoes could not also be part of China's bioweapon delivery system conspiracy? They can only be part of the forced vaccine conspiracy? Or maybe have nothing to do at all with vaccines or bioweapons? One sided conspiracy thinking going on. It does look like some residents of the county finally reached their limit with it all. Part of the far-right majority on the Board has been voted out in this month's elections.
  11. With or without condoms does not matter. There are studies that show that it is the semen entering the woman's body that matters. Gulp.
  12. Rumors that Kennedy may be looking at Nicole Shanahan as his running mate. Shanahan is an attorney/entrepreneur who funded a large part of Kennedy's Super Bowl commercial. She is one of Google co-founder Sergey Brinn's ex-wives. https://nypost.com/2024/03/16/us-news/rfk-jr-to-name-nicole-shanahan-as-running-mate-in-white-house-run-report/
  13. Uhmmm, is my memory fading? I do not remember that election.
  14. As I posted above, 20.7% called themselves bisexual, not L,G,T, or Q. Convert apparently never read anything in the article after the clickbait headline.
  15. Borg? Someone find Jean-Luc Picard.
  16. Looking at the numbers closer, of all Gen Z women: 20.7% said they were bisexual 5.4% said they were lesbian https://news.gallup.com/poll/611864/lgbtq-identification.aspx/ Almost 21% bisexual. Maybe they don't like the idea of the men their age who still live in their parents' basement?
  17. I've been watching for this level of data sharing for years. GM vehicles and others including Subaru, Mitsubishi, Honda, Kia and Hyundai are sharing data about their driver's behaviors with LexisNexis and Verisk. It appears in some cases it is opt-in while in others it is opt-out. But consumers may accidentally opt-in. Besides credit reports, consumers now need to check their LexisNexis report for negative information that can impact them. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60175396/connected-cars-driver-data-tracking-insurance/ https://nypost.com/2024/03/12/business/your-car-is-spying-on-you-and-upping-your-insurance-rates-report/ https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/11/technology/carmakers-driver-tracking-insurance.html I will not be surprised to hear in the future about health insurance companies buying consumer food purchase data from grocery stores to determine if we eat healthy or not.
  18. How about a Lennar subdivision of 661 sq ft detached homes in San Antonio in an HOA. https://www.lennar.com/new-homes/texas/san-antonio/san-antonio/elm-trails Then Hayden Homes is building 880 sq ft homes in Redmond Oregon.
  19. I have not understood people building the large homes with rooms they never use either. When we built our home 20-some years ago the builder and lender both tried to talk us into a much larger house. They kept showing us how large of a mortgage we qualified for. We stood our ground about what we thought we wanted and needed, ended up with a home below 2,000 sq ft. Yet that is still much larger than either of our parents had owned and we know we could have built even smaller for ourselves and been happy. FYI, my wife and I park our cars in the garage at night. Don't need that for storage space for a lot of "stuff" we might have bought to use once or twice then held on to "just in case". Looking way back. The original Levittown houses for returning WWII vets were about 750-1,000 sq ft on 6,000 sq ft lots. Today many do not even consider that large enough to be called a starter home. That "Greatest Generation" was more proud of the fact that they owned a home instead of its size. They would have a mortgage burning party when the loan was paid off. That WWII generation also attached a spread-wing eagle plaque to the house when the mortgage was paid off to symbolize their financial freedom. Funny how Americans idealize a time period in the past when kids shared bedrooms and bathrooms (The 6 Brady kids were in only 2 bedrooms and shared 1 bathroom!). But today many would not want to live like that.
  20. Someone tell the Border Patrol that face tattoos might be probable cause to detain someone. Anyone with face tattoos including celebrities may need to start carrying their papers or risk being in a real life remake of "Born in East LA".
  21. The GOP seems determined to do and say things that push away women voters. I shared this one with my wife this morning and she had a few choice things to say about the Arizona State Senate Republican Majority Leader's attitude. More also in this column from a different source: https://www.azcentral.com/story/opinion/op-ed/laurieroberts/2024/03/08/arizona-gop-senator-aspirin-birth-control-ban/72896881007/
