  1. Thanks for detecting my error. I meant to write "A University of Houston student".
  2. One issue rarely considered about a university is wealth. wealth is allowing some universitys to increase majors while others are reducing them because of the lack of it. The future is not bright for Tulsa which might cause some conferences to be reluctant to add it. Another is it pays coaches very low salaries. "Jul 27, 2023 At the University of Tulsa, a 2019 proposal aimed to reduce degree programs by 40 percent and restructure" https://www.chronicle.com/article/heres-what-happened-after-3-colleges-announced-cuts-to-the-liberal-arts ‘We’re all grieving’ Program cuts, faculty layoffs push students off course https://www.thedaonline.com/news/wvucuts/we-re-all-grieving/article_92319650-8d55-11ee-b36a-0f42a29d76c6.html syracuse and ISU drop out of AAU while USF joins it. A community's wealth will play a major role in NIL. A University of Houston has a NIL contract with ExxonMobil. The amount has not been released. It's safe to say entities in a poor state or community will not keep up.
  3. It's not the Mountain. It's not the Pacific. It's the "Great Western Conference".
  4. If SDSU had joined the PAC last year it would receive nothing for its run.
  5. B1G and SEC cannot implement play-off plans without votes from others. Big-12, ACC, and G5 should resist. Will they vote to kill themselves? An effort was made to kill the Big-12 using the AAC to take Big-12 schools. ESPN was to provide money as part of that effort. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby stopped that by quickly offering UC, UCF, UH, and BYU. B1G and Big12 killed the PAC. ESPN facilitated it by low-balling the money for a new PAC contract and providing money to the Big-12 when taking the 4-corner schools. The Big-12 or ACC may be next. B1G and SEC do not have to exit anything. They and ESPN can get what they want by killing first one and then the other of the B-12 and ACC.
  6. "I don't recall Houston EVER having a decent following..." Aug 26, 2023 The Cougars have surpassed 5,000 new season tickets sold, setting a TDECU Stadium record since the facility's opening. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=university+of+houston+season+tickets+up+5000&t=ftsa&ia=web UH's attendance and viewers will rise when playing against old SWC foes. There are plenty Baylor, TCU, and TT fans in Houston. I am really looking forward to some new matches like UCF-Utah. Long term, UH and UCF are capable of consistently ranking high in the Big-12 because of enrollments, interests in sports, and support. Not many universities will double their endowments this year.

  8. This board has been a lot more active on Conference Realignment than many others. Realignment affects everyone.
  9. "Are you telling us you weren’t aware that Historically Black & Native American universities have been shamefully under funded, as compared to predominantly white public schools???" Nothing like that. It's just that some people use land-grant as though it is a ranking. It is not. Noting that a huge university and a school that most people know little about was intended to show that. I simply chose a small school which is not a university for illustration. The fact that one school is a university and the other is not should make that point. Continue boasting "Oh, we're land-grant" if that makes you feel good. With the history of land grants and how the U.S. got those lands, it's nothing to be proud of. Sorry for the distraction.
  10. "Land grant" is a classification. It is composed of schools that have received grants from the U.S. Government, particularly land. AAU universities are ranked with specified metrics such as "Competitively funded federal research", "Membership in the National Academies (NAS, NAE, IOM)", and "Undergraduate education" As for significance, what is it when "Ohio State" and "Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College" are "Land grant" schools? https://www.aau.edu/who-we-are/membership-policy
  11. "I think it's a little nuts to think that AAU membership, research dollars, UNWR rankings, etc. really matter any more in conference expansion. " A school has to be AAU to join the SEC or B1G. The only exception in modern times is OU and it would not have been invited without UT. OU had previously been rejected by the B1G and the PAC. It seems to be a solid rule.
  12. Non-P5/P4 football teams have shown they can beat some of the best P5 teams. Boise, Cincinnati, Central Florida, Houston have beaten top-25 P5 teams. What they cannot beat is P5 money. These G5 teams did not lose on the field of play. They lost at the cash register. Boise had a tremendous run. That run would have continued as long as Petersen stayed. Houston lost 3 successful HCs over a period of 8 years due to more P5 $. With a record like that, it finally found a dud. Then, P5 fans said "See they cannot compete". Neither can 95% of the P5 teams. P5 fans like to say "G5 do not have the depth to play a full schedule of P5 teams. That will be true as long as the robbery via $ continues.
  13. As the flagship university for the state of Utah, UU should be compared to the flagship of Texas. Comparing UU to a much younger city university says a lot about both.
  14. If UCF is to be compared to Utah it should be on something pertinent like recruiting: Utah 69 UCF 33 and they are just getting started https://247sports.com/Season/2024-Football/TeamRankings/
  15. "why UCF was a terrible addition to the B12?" UCF is a great addition to the Big-12. It will beat Utah in: Enrollment Attendance Viewers Recruiting On-field performance Supporters Revenue Fear is the reason for concentration on the school.
  16. The fate of the PAC-12 Big is similar to that of the Big East. The Big East turned down an offer as they thought it was too low. That was the end. Turn down an offer from ESPN at your own risk.
  17. Southern Miss, Boise State, and Marshall are all in small, relatively poor cities and states. If you have been to hattiesburg or Huntington you know they will never invest heavily in anything. Boise will invest but it is doing it after the barn door has closed. Houston's 1.2 billion $ endowment will double next year if voters approve in Nov. Texas has a 32 billion $ budget surpass to spend. UCF, Cincy, and Houston had invested heavily in facilities and coaches. Commitments had been displayed. They each had some recent athletic success. The farm state schools remaining after OU-UT left needed eyeballs and recruiting. The Big12-2 needed to act quickly. UCF, Cincy, and Houston had been vetted by the Big-12 in 2016. They were ready.
  18. "sports don't contribute to the overall academic endowment funds" Athletics and academics are complementary. The academic side provide financial support with facilities and student athletic fees. The athletic side would not exist without the academic side. It's also a draw for serious students. The athletic side provides great advertisements. For example, SMU draws students from all over the country. Without publicity from sports, few outside the Dallas area would know it exists.
  19. A reverse merger will not work. There is no revenue stream if the surviving conference is PACx. There is a revenue stream with probable increases if PAC schools join the MWC.
  20. How The Television Map Influences Realignment https://sicem365.com/s/15599/how-the-television-map-influences-realignment
  21. WSU and OSU will join/merge with the MWC. Travel to AAC would be costly and harmful on athletes. Any attempt to revise a PAC?? would be very involved and have schools in limbo for years. You guys simply want instant gratification.
  22. Ohio State and a junior college have the same Land-Grant classification. They share that classification, but they are not equal academically. Land-Grant means a school researches a states food supply, such as grains, vegetables, fruit, fish, beef. It does not indicate how well it performs. The AAU downplays money from Land-Grant research because they get it without competitive bidding. competitive bidding would indicate performance quality.
  23. "Land-grant" should not be used as an indication of the quality of a university. They include extremes such as Ohio State and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. "Land-grant universities are any colleges that benefited from the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890. First signed during the Civil War by President Abraham Lincoln, the Morrill Act eventually gave 74 universities public land as a way for the colleges to raise funds." The U. S. Government and the Land-grant universities have a dark history. For example, "UC Berkeley received 148,636 acres of land, none of which the U.S. government paid the first inhabitants for, and the university made $730,860 from this endowment". The land was taken from the Chumash people. Their "achievements" have not always been positive. They have discarded the flavor of tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables to have stronger skins allowing them to travel better. A friend traveled from Texas to Kansas a few years ago. She raved for weeks after returning about Kansas tomatoes. She simply encountered tomatoes which had not had their flavor destroyed by Land-grant universities. https://www.hfa.ucsb.edu/news-entries/2021/1/27/the-truth-behind-land-grab-universities
  24. You may not have viewed this video. PAC-12 rejected a lot of opportunities.
  25. Texas is booming while the rest of the country is not. "Jan 10, 2023 Texas legislators will return to Austin on Tuesday to a $32.7 billion estimated budget surplus for the 2024-2025 fiscal year". https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/politics/2023/01/10/440894/texas- record-breaking-surplus-is-now-nearly-33-billion/ The boom in Texas is affecting everything including education at every level. Texas had 3 research universities in 2009. UHouston wanted to be a research university. A 2009 amendment to the state constitution allowed for more and the state legislature provided funds. Today, there are 11 Carnegie R1 universities in Texas. UHouston wanted an increase in its endowment. Now, if Proposition 5 is approved in Nov., 2023 several Texas Universities will receive ongoing revenue boosts to their endowments. UHouston leadership is awesome. Recently, there was a reference to a Texas University with a USNews rank of 285 as it was permanent. Expect a big improvement. https://ballotpedia.org/Texas_2023_ballot_measures If Proposition 4 is approved in Nov., 2023 there will be an increase in state funding for public education.
