Religious schools and a handful of elite colleges like Stanford and Oregon and a couple in the SEC. It’s uncommon.

BSU could but would require investment from outside in form of NIL deals. Average team has 39 athletes but only 12.9 scholarships (for men). Women’s team has 18 scholarships.

Easier to go all-in on distance and XC (2 for 1) out West where sprinters and throwers are few and far between but distance running is common.

I don't follow BYU's CC or T&F teams particularly closely, but it seems like the Elite CC teams have a lot of crossover that have assisted in keeping the T&F teams consistently in/near the top 25.

Not how it works.  If they merge one will no longer exist.

Not how this works.  MWC can bring their current assets into the merger but The credits are FUTURE ASSETS payable to THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE.  With a merger There will not be a MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE and right will go back to school who earned the credit

I'm going to go way out on a limb and guess that you don't have much experience with mergers and acquisitions.

Two conferences can’t exist at the same time.  What, do they get two auto bids as well?

If the conferences merge together, then - generally speaking - the rights and responsibilities associated with each conference flow into the new entity.

I wouldn't expect the new merged conference to be allowed two auto bids.

    that is pathetic

Not sure why the NCAA tournament keeps selecting Spokane as a host venue when they clearly don't have the hotel space.

They could be doing this in Seattle or maybe Portland in the PNW

There was a huge volleyball tournament in town and they had booked most of the rooms well in advance. The GU women did not learn they were hosting until the Sunday before the tournament started. They had never hosted before and no hotel is going to turn down certain reservations from the volleyball tournament to hold room for a basketball tournament that might not happen.

It's an easy drive from CDA to Gonzaga. That's not the issue. The issue is more Northern Idaho racist whackjobs threatening other people with harm.

Google Maps says it's just a 39 minute drive from Coeur d'Alene to Spokane.

There’sa difference between mwc joining the PAC and the pac teams joining mwc.  The statement was the pac teams will join the mwc.  If that happens then there is no pac and therefore no credits. They need mwc to join pac to keep credit

If they merge the two conferences, then they should keep the credits from both conferences.

@Pelado, I see Marcus Adams Jr. is in the portal.  He had a rough first year of college. I wish it had worked out at BYU.

Yip.  I never really expected for him to stay for long, but it's still disappointing to see him leave already.

I know March is all about matchups.. but how tf did BYU lose to Duquesne??

Poor play offensively from the bigs, too many live-ball turnovers, and ineffective defense overall.  I think Duquesne also out-coached BYU.  They were very well-prepared, making BYU very uncomfortable on offense and exploiting advantages against BYU's team defense.

The magic ran out for the Egyptian Khalifa, going 0-6 with two rebounds, one assist, and two turnovers in 16 minutes while fasting for Ramadan.  Traore was uncharacteristicly inefficient, going 4-12.  For his career, he averages over 60% from the field.  Trevin Knell (though not a big) didn't play particularly well, either.

As poorly as they played for much of the game, they still had a chance at the end, with the game tied with 1:30 to go.

Of the teams remaining in the Sweet Sixteen, BYU has wins against three of them this season (San Diego State and Iowa State at home, NC State at a neutral court) and played almost well enough to win at home against another (Houston), being tied with two minutes left and within 1 point with a minute to play.

Frustrating to play so poorly when it matters most.

I upped the total entries to 8 so I could do all the major rankings systems and 3 entries for myself. Get those picks in, should be a hell of a tournament.

My Cinderella picks this year are Duquesne & Dayton.

    Ouch.

USU lost 25 games even though this is just their 24th appearance (yet to be played)? Odd. Same for some other schools listed

Do they have some consolation 3rd place games or something?

    They used to.

The Pac-2 have $250 million or so in guaranteed future revenues, plus at least another $8 million from this year's NCAA tournament. When the ACC implodes - looking more probable with Clemson's actions today - the more it looks like some two- or three-division super-league with the remainder of the ACC and Big 12 will be formed, with WSU and OSU as members.

Most of that $250 million is already earmarked to cover future liabilities.

Where is that money coming from?  That's not all from NCAA tournament credits, is it?

If the metrics the committee claims to look at are disregarded, sure.  Lol

Regarding Boise, Mark Few said it was the biggest NCAAT screw job he had ever seen.  You get it more than him, though.

SDSU, Gonzaga and Saint Marry's do not have a resume that is 5 seed lines better than Boise.  Fact.

    The Tourney values OOC play.

The Tourney chair was on CBSSports last night and said, the Conference has great metrics, but their top wins are against each other.  He even went so far as to suggest that if UNM didn't have the AQ, they were on the bubble.

OOC play matters. That, and losing to the Ground Force at home,  yikes.

He didn't say they were on the bubble.  He said they were a bid thief.  If they hadn't won the MW tournament, they'd be in the NIT.

NC State with a big win for them against dook.

Good for BYU since they beat NC State earlier this season.  Probably doesn't drop Duke below BYU on the S-curve, though an argument could be made.  Duke has a better Quad 1 record but a worse Quad 2 record.  It could be argued that their Quad 1 wins are less impressive than BYU's:

    Duke's Quad 1 wins - #14 Baylor, #23 Michigan State, #45 Pittsburgh, #61 Virginia Tech, #73 NC State

    BYU's Quad 1 wins - #9 Iowa State, #14 Baylor, #19 Kansas, #20 San Diego State, #28 Texas, #60 UCF

How bad is the Khalifa injury? He looked gassed besides. Ramadan maybe?

He was fasting for Ramadan, so that could have contributed to him looking gassed.  Though, to be honest, he doesn't need to fast to look gassed.

I haven't heard the extent of the injury so far.  Hoping it's not too bad and that it won't hamper him in the NCAA tourney.

Agree. Free throws were very lopsided too.

There were definitely calls I disagreed with, but I think the game overall was officiated pretty well.

He was 6-8 from the field. That's money. TT didn't appear to have any legit shot blockers. Traore isn't tall but he's thick and has good footwork, Pope chose to go down with the 3 pointer ship and they sunk bad.  When the game was cut to single digits, plenty of opportunity to feed the post and close the gap with efficient 2 pointers.

BYU chose to just keep clanking away at threes. Not good coaching right there. You have to adjust your gameplan if something has failed for 90% of the game.

One of the big problems was that they couldn't get stops on the defensive end.  As such, getting 2 offensively would be immediately matched with 2 for Texas Tech at the other side of the court.

@robe, with the “world wide 5 billion strong BYU fanbase” you are always bragging about, you’d figure BYU should have top billing and choice from ESPN and Fox on their main platforms rather than almost 80% of your games being on an obscure pay per view streaming service.

Pretty clear why so many BYU games were slated for Big 12 Now on ESPN+.  They were picked to finish 13th in the conference (out of 14).  Generally speaking, teams expected to suck don't get a lot of air time on ESPN/ESPN2/etc.

Or, if you prefer more of a homer view, BYU was on ESPN+ so much in order to drive ESPN+ subscriptions - kind of like how BYU was stuck playing on the mtn so often to drive Comcast subscriptions.

@Pelado, I’m not sure why BYU doesn’t bang Traore in the post more. He’s a big man with skill. Scores easy when he gets the ball.

Trying to get cute on the perimeter only works on good shooting days.

He was one of the few bright spots offensively today.  I don't think there were any defensive bright spots.

Traore is a very skilled scorer down low, but his height (or lack thereof relative to many opponents) sometimes render him less effective.  Tech was able to disrupt him early in the game, too, with double and triple teams that he couldn't pass out of quickly enough.

BYU had about 15 games on ESPN+ this year.

I guess that’s kinda “ national coverage”. LMAO.

I count 23 ESPN+ games for BYU during the men's basketball season.

The courts haven't even decided which lawsuit in the ACC imbroglio even takes precedence.  That stuff could go on for years.  So no ACC raid and no AAC raid, so that eliminates the AAC scenario at the very least.

Not sure I've ever noticed that signature quote before.  I like it.

The game was never in doubt for BYU. They were a much better team. Not as athletic but a better team. I mean this as a compliment. BYU might be the best ward ball team on the planet.

Old man moves, crisp, efficient passes, spacing, finding the open shot and they’re all on the same page. Not terrible on D either.

Their drawback is, they live and die by the 3. If a really good, athletic opponent catches BYU on a bad 3 pointer night, game over.

The game did get as close as 3 points in the second half, but you're right - BYU was able to answer each time UCF rallied and never trailed in the game.

BYU is definitely dangerous when they are hitting their 3-point attempts.  When they're not shooting well, they can lose even to bad teams - like in their first loss of the season.
