  1. Timing: Boise had a national following for a period of time, thus the skewed MWC deal. That following has diminished as Boise hasn't been as successful. If Boise football today had the success of Boise football 7 years ago, I think they're included in the Big XII and either UCF, Cincy or Houston are out.

  2. am I the only one that still thinks BYU could screw this up?

    • Tom misses the BigXII call because his phone was switched to airplane mode while he competes in the quarter-finals of a potato sack race at the Holmoe family reunion

    • the Big 8 presidents mysteriously receive a complementary bottle of Tahitian Noni, Essentials oils and hand crafted note saying they’ll be look for them in church to answer any questions

    • BYU puts Eagle Scout and Zone leader on their Big XII application

    • Holmoe books the Orem Chuck-A-Rama VIP room for the Big XII Expansion committee visit / or he gives them the option of Chilis or Applebees

2012 was the year TCU and WV joined, with Louisville left at the altar (nice consolation prize, though).  So I dont think Boise was ever in play seriously.

I should have clarified, if the Big XII in its current state could add the Boise of 2012.

    I'm tired.

  4. a friend is in a DC hospital with severe COVID pneumonia. He had two stays at a hospital in Virginia, but his family was disappointed at the care he was receiving (they sent him home twice because of lack of space, just to have him admitted again the next day). Thankfully he is improving. Initially they thought he had blood clots in both lungs, but it sounds like that was incorrect. The goal now is to save his lungs so that he doesn't require a lung transplant. Our families got together at back in June just to catch up. He was fully vaccinated and is/was in great fit shape weeks ago. This is week 4 of hell for this family. Be careful out there.

I'd be lying if I tried to tell you otherwise. There was definitely some good luck and timing involved. If the P10 went with the Texas/OU package, we'd likely be in the MWC still.

But I'd say the P12 got a great deal with Utah.. We've been improving our academic and sport's profile for a long time before an invite.

AAU status, solid TV numbers, full football stadiums every week.  We are top 5 in the country on # of weeks in the CFP rankings, 2 P12 south titles. We've only lost 1 football game in OOC since 2011.  Bowl wins(almost all of them). Basketball took a shit in performance and attendance but we've still added plenty of NCAA credits to the coffers of the P12.

There's not many schools in the country that have that resume. With more than a few in our own conference that don't.

So maybe not worth 30 mill but certainly worth more than a lot of P5 teams out there.

one other more important reason Utah/Colorado were good additions, both states are exploding in business/population

I expect the next step in the restructuring of college football will be the elimination of financial parity for the media deals among schools within a conference. It really makes little sense to be paying USC the same amount as Oregon St, or Ohio St the same as Northwestern. That will be the last step to try and keep the status quo going in college football before we see a 25 team premiere league

I hadn't considered that as a possibility.  I guess it could happen.

But there are benefits to being in the Big 12 beyond just the media contracts.  First, football scheduling gets a lot easier.  Next, the champion gets an automatic bid to a NY6 bowl (for now).  If and when an expanded playoff happens on the terms that had been proposed, it would be easier to get an automatic bid as a conference champ.  Additionally, there are some really good basketball schools in the league.  Getting conference home games against those guys every year would be great.

    valid points!

I know scheduling was difficult for BYU football early on, but Holmoe has knocked it out of the park since IMO. I wonder if they've value playing all over the country that they might not want to give that up???

On the flip slide joining the 8 remaining Big XII teams is still a damn good football conference with TCU, Baylor, OK ST and Iowa St.

  8. clearly BYU's BOT would make the final decision on whether to join an athletic conference and while I think overall they would be in favor of a move to the Big XII, but considering BYU is tight with ESPN, maybe they step in and give BYU a raise to stay independent?

  9. I wonder if there is still some bad blood between BYU and the Big XII from previous rumored discussions?

other than a 2 year series with Baylor, BYU doesn't have another Big XII school on future schedules, that just seems odd to me considering BYU has 9-11 games to fill every year

I have no doubt the Big 12 is talking to schools.  Mr Torello's wording is...interesting.  If the Big 12 is doing the pursuing (which I doubt), why would UCF be the one cautiously optimistic?

I'm fairly confident that the Big 12/8 survives. All indications are that the PAC12 isn't expanding right now (announcement from the PAC12 should come later today or tomorrow), and I don't believe the B1G or ACC are either. UCF makes sense as a good addition. I could see both parties talking.

I can see RSF already packing his beach ball, sun screen and snorkeling goggles for his Orlando Beach vacation/road game. :D
