UTSA over UTEP is fine. But they play in like a 3k arena. UTEP has been terrible, I know, but at least they have the sunbowl and a 12k bb arena.

UTEP has history with a good amount of MWC programs from the old WAC days...........it's within the MWC footprint ..........BB could be good there in a decent conference

Not really sure what the fascination / value is from getting the 6th to 9th ranked (in terms of TX pecking order) does for the MWC ............if the Texas fetish is that strong, then the MWC needs to go big & almost create a TX centric division by adding UTEP / UTSA / TX St / N Tx 7 maybe NMSU for their proximity and old ties to many MWC programs

Maybe the MWC should go big & capture everything in the west not in the B10/B12/ACC.............at this point we aren't getting into the big boys club, so might as well create a western centric conference that could stand alone with 4 divisions in two conferences inside the MWC/PAC name plate

basically a 4 division conference with 5 to 6 teams per division

What makes Texas State so attractive for the MWC? Is it because they have the word. "State" in its name?

For many just getting a Texas based school not located in El Paso is the great goal to make the MWC Great Again -- Personally I'm not convinced taking the 6th to 8th Texas based option just because the school is located in Texas is the best strategy

They say it's about recruiting.......but most MWC programs are going to be the 4th to 6th option for any TX based recruit...........and it's not like the MWC programs don't already recruit Texas -- UNLV WBB has 5 of 14 roster posts filled by Texans without ever playing a game in Texas

  3. As the article I posted above in this thread......UNLV was loose as a team.........didn't think they'd show up this loose..........that was like a pick up game from the UNLV side -- Not much to hang a hat on from this game other than the season is over and we know can turn our attention to who's staying, going and coming in

I have the game on DVR & am behind real time .......where I'm at the score is SH 60 UNLV 38..........and from looking at the final score it's just SH 31 UNLV 30 from the 13:50 point on

Key Boone might have had more air balls than shots that hit the rim.........lots of errant passes & overall crappy shooting

  4. From this article, there seems to be no tension or pressure in the UNLV locker room, the players are having fun & rolling with it

    https://lasvegassun.com/news/2024/mar/27/no-worries-for-unlv-basketball-as-carefree-nit-run/

No worries for UNLV basketball as carefree NIT run continues

The UNLV basketball team is learning that lesson right now, as a pressure-free NIT run has unlocked a joyful style of play and led the Scarlet and Gray to a quarterfinal matchup against Seton Hall on Wednesday (4 p.m., ESPN2).

Head coach Kevin Kruger couldn’t help but notice the mood of his team, which has now won 12 of its last 15 contests.

“They’re playing hard, and they’re having fun with it,” Kruger said. “They know each day is a great opportunity to get a little more work in, another day with everybody and another day to play basketball.”

Given a chance to exhale, UNLV has rediscovered the joy of ball in NIT victories over Princeton and Boston College.

“The main thing with us in the locker room was just telling everyone to have fun,” freshman guard D.J. Thomas said. “Don’t put any pressure on yourself. If we have fun and just keep playing basketball how we’re playing, everything is going to take care of itself.”

The easygoing attitude was evident in the second half against Boston College. When the game got tight, UNLV responded with a series of big plays to put it away, including a highlight alley-oop dunk by Kalib Boone on a beautiful pass from Thomas. But it was the team’s only turnover that had the players in stitches on Monday.

After practice, Thomas and junior forward Rob Whaley shared a laugh about an errant pass by senior forward Keylan Boone — the lone giveaway that spoiled a potentially historic zero-turnover effort.

“It was upsetting,” Whaley chuckled, “but from how it happened, I can’t say anything about it because it was hilarious. I was standing right there, and I just watched him throw it right to the guy, and I was like, ‘Good pass, Key.’”

True to their newfound sunny disposition, UNLV shrugged off the miscue and Boone came back with a big shot moments later.

“Things like that happen,” Whaley said. “You get back on defense and just get it back. Luckily he got it back for us, he hit the 3 from the logo.”

Whaley believes that lighthearted but serious approach is doing wonders for UNLV as the team continues to extend its first postseason appearance since 2013.

“That’s just how we are,” Whaley said. “We have fun with everything we do. From practice to stretching to film to weights, everything we do is us having fun. But locked in. It’s like, we’re locked in first, have fun second.”

Cross-country flights on short notice are generally understood to be a nightmare, but Whaley and his teammates see the bright side.

“There’s nothing better than traveling with your brothers and going on. This is a great group of guys. An interesting group of guys. The most interesting group of guys I’ve ever met, personally. It’s just fun. We’ve had fun with it, even if it’s five hours, 10 hours across the country, we try to have fun with it.”

While I embrace that, this season's schedule was easily NCAA worthy.  UNLV just shit the bed 3x this year with Q4 losses which cost them.  Schedule was fine and very appropriate for this team.  Still,, I'd like to see it pushed a little harder.

True...............wasn't that bad of a schedule, plus the Dayton game was lost to the UNLV shooting incident, then back filled with two NAIA level teams that were just to get the guys some run against someone in another uniform

One of the biggest positives of this year was how well attendance increased throughout the year. Early in the season we were drawing putrid crowds of 3k or so, by the end they had increased to 8k and up. It's a sign that excitement and confidence in the program has increased.

Thats why UNLV & Kruger need to bring in better non-conference opponents if possible

It's amazing that, after the '83 season with a pair of NCAA tourney wins, he's hired away by UC Santa Barbara. @utenation, why though? He said there was no pressure from higher ups, just wanted a new challenge. Was that really it?

Looks like UNLV2001 answered. A little before my time. lol.

In '83 I was in college at Idaho (Don Monson had the Vandals ranked & winning!) .......I remember when Primm left Utah......odd move but as noted in the article, he was looking to get back to SOCal where he & his wife were from

Think Primm was looking to back away from coaching and UCSB was an ideal step to retirement for Jerry.........I recall him living on a boat while at UCSB

I’ve been keeping my eye on UNLV. Since Utah is also 2-0.  I’m hoping for a Utah/UNLV final. I think we’re good enough to win 1 more home game but we will fall apart like a whore in church once we have to leave our arena.  We are hot garbage out of home digs.

If it happens, I’ll be happy.

I'd like a UNLV vs Utah NIT title game - a western centric, old foes game !!

The portal is so dumb now. No loyalty or player development. Also how do they take academics seriously if they’re moving schools so frequently lol

With the NIL $$ being a driver of these transfers...........academics are pretty much out the window for probably 75% of players

College athletics (mainly FB & BB) have become a 4 year money making endeavor, where skills are put out to bid every season

Less than 1 percent chance IMO. They almost certainly wouldn't have accepted an NIT in the first place if they were planning on letting him go, and now that we have won 2 NIT games to boot, little to no chance.

I'll personally be glad to see him return. Underwhelming OOC and early MW start aside, it was really nice to see a UNLV team actually improve as the season went along for once.

Biggest question for any program these days is who of the returning players are actually going to to return the next season  --- IF Kruger can keep most of the underclassmen and with the HS recruits and a few key transfer portal guys, UNLV could be in great shape going into next season...........then I would like to see the non-conference schedule strengthened which would help increase interest, SOS/NET numbers and attendance

No reason UNLV shouldn't be in the top 2 to 4 in the MWC next season when the media days begin

The issue is most people here aren’t old enough to remember those days so they aren’t mentioned. Even the big Rick days are getting pretty dusty.

Utah State also has some nice history in the 60’s and 70’s.

I started following UNLV in 1977 during that FF run when is was in HS in the Reno area.......having a team from NV doing well was news worthy across the state..........then I was in LV area when UNLV had that 4 year romance with the old WAC.........where Utah, BYU, New Mexico & Wyoming were all pretty good and getting T20 votes

But unless one is of a certain age, you don't recall the days when some of our teams where good ............so it's not like Majerus took over a crappy program ........Utah had solid history

Steve Fisher took over a crapfest at SDSU & made it what it is .............and Few could be said to be the guy at Gonzaga, after Monson was only there two seasons before Few took over when Monson left for Minnesota ........probably thinking, that he got lucky at Gonzaga & bailed for the big time & got out of a little WCC program while the getting was good

  14. Two things about this coming game vs UCONN

    1) SDSU was fortunate that Yale upset Auburn giving SDSU an easier opponent to reach the Sweet 16 round

    2) Not sure this SDSU team is all that strong, but if things go their way the Aztecs could pull off a W vs UCONN & make it to the E8 where they could match up against old UNLV HC TJO & Iowa State

Upsets along the brackets can help teams out & that's just the way it goes sometimes .........especially these days where the 1/2/3 seeds aren't loaded like they once where

I said elsewhere that we would have been better off if we kept DR all this time.

    But female ADs.

Anyway. I think he is safe. Gets another year.

Agree........might have been more of a question early this season, but as the season progressed things stabilized for the most part and now with a run of sorts in the NIT I can't see UNLV cutting KK loose at this point

They haven't been able to replace Majerus, who built a culture and system there. Not too dissimilar to what Mark Few has done at Gonzaga. They need to find a way to get back to that.

Larry Krystkowiak came the closest to achieving that but he flamed out in the end.

Utah was pretty good back when Jerry Primm was there -- Tom Chambers Danny Vranes & Jeff Judkins ---
