  1. Thank you. People here need to just stop equating the US to Italy. I don't mean to downplay what we're all going through but our situation is simply NOT of Italian proportions nor is it going to get that bad. More broadly speaking, some of the things on this thread are so alarmist that I have to wonder whether they were posted by this guy:
  2. Well, I hope this guy proves to be correct: https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Saudi-Arabias-Oil-War-Could-Bankrupt-The-Kingdom.html
  3. And automation is only going to increase. Just another reason we need to ignore scare tactics of those who say the economy will fall off the table if we don't continue to increase the population of the country. Rather the US should stop allowing so many people in while striving for zero population growth.
  4. You misunderstood my sarcasm. I'll try to do better next time.
  5. 1) You apparently didn't notice that I said such "gutting" began "long before Trump." 2) True enough but NAFTA accelerated the process and although a Democrat was president, the Republicans then controlled both houses of Congress for the first time in more than 40 years.
  6. You're nothing but a "God Less" heathen just like this guy:
  7. Significant New Deal legislation that was enacted in the wake of the Great Depression did a huge amount to mitigate income disparities created by the unrestrained capitalism of the industrial revolution. Maybe the coronavirus scare will be so economically catastrophic as to eventually result in much of the same. However, I doubt it and one of the advantages of this forum is that it serves as a slap in the face to those of us naive enough to think the income gap is going to do anything but increase during our lifetimes.
  8. Not saying Trump was "hiding" it, he was simply BS'ing everybody on the strength of the economy just like he does about almost everything. On your final point, the "young" have indeed always been financially downtrodden as a group. The difference these days - and I'm certainly not fully blaming Trump because it's a process which began long before he assumed office - is what a large percentage of older people also barely survive economically. And if you dispute the impact of virtual elimination of manufacturing jobs to the economy, THAT is ridiculous.
  9. You aren't wrong but as I understand it, the other poster wasn't referring to businesses having a cash flow problem, he was talking about individuals. And he mentioned that in the context of the disingenuity of Trump's allegedly best-ever economy. Yeah the unemployment rate has been at historical lows but it's smoke and mirrors. As my good friend often says, with the exception of cars, American doesn't make anything anymore. Fact is, manufacturing has gradually almost entirely moved overseas and south of the border and the service jobs which have replaced those manufacturing jobs pay next to nothing in comparison. Accordingly, the average American worker now has relatively little savings. Plus back in the day half the manufacturing jobs were union jobs which included good medical benefits. Only a small number of the service jobs provide them either.
  10. Germans certainly didn't do that during the Weimar Republic. You can't just print deutschmarks when you have no gold or other assets to back them up.
  11. This. I initially defended Trump from criticism about how he was handling this, thinking there was little he could have done which he hadn't. However, that was before he announced that testing was available for everyone who might want it. Had that statement been true, tens of thousands of Americans who have been concerned they might have been infected would either have been able to assure themselves they weren't or would have quaranteened themselves from friends, co-workers and loved ones. Instead that statement clearly came from straight out of Trump's ass. Literally nobody in the country has as much access to information as our president and we therefore look to that person to be a sort of a father figure in times of trouble. However, now we have a person in that position who is much more like my uncle Wayne who when I was about 12 and asked at Thanksgiving what was meant by the term merchant marines said "they are the first to hit the beach." (Dad, who fought in WWII, damn near told his idiot brother to GTFO of our house.)
  12. The Italian government has been mismanaged for decades and the way it handled the coronavirus is no exception. Italy should not be used as an example of what will occur in the US or any other country.
  13. "I want to thank all the people standing behind me . . ." (who are thinking to themselves "how many more times am I going to have to stand behind Trump for no apparent reason while I try my best not to look stupid?").
  14. Yeah. Trump WAS, after all, the inspiration for this:
  15. But now maybe we're ready in event of an invasion by Marsians.
  16. Yes. My very Italian American friend who visits Italy every other year has told me how odd some of his relatives are. For example, Rick has a cousin who until he finally got married in his late forties still lived with his parents. The guy's mother still cooked for him and did his laundry and Rick said it was common for men to do that. That family lives in Milan IIRC.
  17. The United States IS a great country. However, to paraphrase what Marx said about religion, exceptionalism is the opate of the American masses. (Countdown to SGF now being called a commie. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . .)
  18. Does the author mean to say that the 21st century United States might NOT be the greatest nation the world has ever known? Why that's just GD un-Merican!
  19. https://news.yahoo.com/trumps-coronavirus-travel-ban-excludes-084941568.html Totally coincidental I'm sure.
  20. And an uninformed, narcissistic non-leader at all times. Hopefully millions who voted for him in 2016 will have opened their eyes about that and he will be crushed come November. (And yes, I DO know that Biden exhibits signs of senility. However, to repeat, it's been plain to me for at least a couple years that my cat would make a better president than Trump.)
  21. Or maybe we'll will get lucky and Trump will pull an LBJ and use the Oval Office address for a surprise announcement that he's decided not to run for reelection.
  22. Fact: Having checked, there is exactly one Waffle House within a 50 mile radius of my home here in L.A and it's way down in Santa Ana about 40 miles away. In Hollywood just over the hill from me there IS, however, the locally famous Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. I've never stopped in but it's very popular with the white kids with dredlocks crowd. (Probably don't see a lot of them in Waffle Houses, right?)
  23. Shoot, California deserves it. Damn big-guvment high-tax lovin' leftist commie progressives.
