I think what they described isn't an avalance per-say, but something similar caused by poor snow stability and wind.

Sorry for necromancing, but I was reading about this last night again and there was a new investigation in Russia this year that concluded the cause of the incident was some sort of avalanche, or avalanche-like effect that forced the campers to flee their campsite. The fact is, the stadium deal was widely panned by several economists and experts who saw that it was a favorable deal for Mark Davis and Oakland, and had no real benefits for southern Nevada beyond giving Oakland and downtown resorts a blowjob.
