  1. Today was Ash Wednesday. I'm not catholic. Not at all. But the day has personal significance for me. It's the day, just a few years ago, that my wife and I had to decide to terminate a wanted pregnancy at 21 weeks because the membranes from the amniotic sac had prolapsed. It's called incompetent cervix. The fetus was fine, but the pregnancy was doomed. I've discussed this here, though it's been a while. It's also the day that she, just hours after we decided to terminate, suffered septic shock and nearly died while delivering a still birth. She spent the next week in the ICU, and weeks after recovering at home. Our decision to terminate was significantly delayed by the fact that we were at a small, Catholic hospital that required us to go through an ethics board for approval to determine she was at enough "risk" to terminate. Today, she's into her 21st week of her third pregnancy. We're batting .500 so far. Our boy is 6, and he's aware this time in ways he wasn't last time. To say she is a high-risk pregnancy is an understatement. She's 40, so there's all of that stuff. But her history requires extra attention, and about a month ago we found things giving way in the cervix that required an immediate emergency trip to Stanford hospital to get a procedure to try and keep things from progressing further. The procedure went as well as it could have, except the anesthesia gave her a crazy headache and required us to go back for a gnarly follow-up procedure. Things are holding, and all the doctors are optimistic. But the fact of the matter is that the procedure can only do so much... if her body isn't up for it this time around, there's not much to be done. There also isn't great data to offer a quantitative prediction on odds for outcome. So every week now, we go to a specialist (who is amazing, by the way) who does a thorough examination to see if my wife's cervix is thinning, by how much, and what that means for the viability of this pregnancy. I'm so +++++ing terrified that this is going to end up like it did last time. It happened so fast, in one afternoon. I'll never forget the look in that poor doctor's face at the hospital. She was young, maybe still in residency? We went in thinking it was just spotting. Then she came in, told my wife "This wasn't your fault," and looked like a deer in the headlights when she said it. I'm just waiting for the same thing to happen again, for someone to tell us it wasn't our fault. Every second of every day. Other than with a handful of close friends and family members, and the occasional therapist, I've actually been more forthcoming and honest with some of you on here than anyone else on what happened in February and March, 2019. I mean, my fellow grad students don't want t know about the inner workings of my wife's vagina. And it's none of their business. And frankly a decent number of you can suck my ass, so I wonder... But some on here have actually offered support and encouragement that made a real impact in times of need. Not just for me. This is a special place, even as special places have become less special. I don't ask for anything, other than thoughts and prayers. For me. Not my wife. She doesn't need them. My grandfather is a war hero. He flew in WW2 as an ace with the Flying Tigers. He marched in the south during civil rights. He dedicated his post-military career to getting poor kids scholarships at Lehigh University in PA. And yet, my wife is the bravest person I've met. Not even close. We could all learn something about grace, beauty, strength, humility and meaning from her. You could. Be kind to children. Love your family. Help your neighbor. I will update if or when I can.

  7. Completely sad situation. Those FB players should have immediately been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. If the Coaching Staff knew and covered up the crime, they should immediately be fired. I love SDSU Sports, but not at the expense of student safety and/or covering up said crimes.

  8. Frances May was born on Thursday, June 29. Healthy and loud. I'm still deciding whether this will be my last post on here for various reasons. But whether it is or it isn't, I feel like I should close the loop on this one. Thanks for those on here who have offered sincere prayers and support over the years.

  12. Most Boise State fans, myself included, have just come to the conclusion that we’re never going to be a P4 (soon to be P2) conference school. Really all I want anymore is for Boise State to be in the same conference with Fresno, Nevada, and USU. Those are the games our fans traditionally care about and all three are easy destinations for travel. I shared this with some others on a side thread … For all the talk about inclusiveness and equal opportunity coming from university administrators, they sure as hell don't practice it when it comes to athletics, funding, and revenue. The hypocrisy is strong.

  13. Monday, April 3, 5:30 PDT, CBS Opening Line (Saturday, April 1): UCONN -7.5 NCAA REVENGE TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! The Butler did it. With a dagger. Not sure if I'm really typing this now or just dreaming... need to ask Bob's mom to pinch me. Nothing but respect for FAU. Those guys ball. I mean, if our lot can't appreciate what they've done coming total obscurity to show the world who they are, no one can. Just like us, they started from essentially nothing. Just like us, they relied on finding overlooked guys and filling in the gaps wth transfers. I mean, much like here in SD, I doubt it's difficult to recruit to Boca. Just like us, they go deep in their bench. Just like us, chips on their shoulders to a T. Jus like us, gym rats with solid work ethic. Just like us, unselfish and connected. There is a reason it was a one possession spread. But onward and upward. Another line in the bracket filled in with SDSU's name. No idea what transpires on Monday. I imagine we'll be heavy underdogs, and after watching UConn dismantle the U just now, I can understand why. Holy shit they're playing solid ball, on both sides. There's a reason they're so high in most metrics. But... BUT... I think we match up better with UConn than Miami did. And it's all about matchups. I mean, we shut down Bama's vaunted offense and scored enough against their vaunted defense. FiveThirtyEight gives us a 30% chance - better than the 1/4 odds they gave us against the #1 overall seed. So why not, Why the f*ck not. I mean, 2011 still stings. The serendipity of getting the chance to win our first ever natty while getting revenge for 2011 against one of the more prolific programs in all of college hoops over the last quarter-century just seems f*cking storybook. So why the hell not. Let's have a storybook ending. All my Rum? F*ck that... All Your Rum are Belong to Jobu. Oh, and one more thing... Aztecs! Give 'em hell State!

  16. If there's a merger with the PAC, this board better damn well survive. I just don't know what I'd do without being able to follow MWC teams, talk shit and get belittled for being FCS. I can't think of a poster or even a team I wouldn't miss, including the unwashed masses in Boise.

  18. It's whatever for me. If Wyoming makes the new PAC 12 fine. Can't say I would be too pumped about Tulane, Memphis, SMU or schools like that. Could give a shit less about the PAC 4. I would want the whole MW to go but I'm sure some schools would get dropped for AAC schools I like the current MW personally. I'd rather stand pat. If Wyoming is left behind. Bring on the Montanas and whomever else. Yeah it will be different but I'll still watch Wyoming football. College football isn't what it used to be for me anyway. This won't be the last of the big changes either. If players become employees that will also be a seismic change to the sport. This fighting over scraps is old. I just want to watch football games against regional schools and rivals.

  25. There are probably 4-5 MWC schools that would be left behind if this happened. Why would they vote to dissolve the conference and hurt themselves?
    16 points
  26. I say our opening offer should be if you want some of us you get all of us. We are not going to screw over historical conference partners for teams that would screw us over in a millisecond if they could. CalFord adds value , but not enough value to leave teams out in the cold that we have history with. Our approach should be come along if you want to , or don't . We don't care either way. As far as WSU or OSU we should help them out as much as we can and be flexible where we can. They fit in much better with us , and our more likely to build history, and loyalty with us.

  30. Welp, the pac is dead, I remember months ago I asked on Reddit if WSU should just go independent, people thought I was crazy for even suggesting it.. Admittedly, it still is crazy. But at least I was prepared. I was shocked months ago but now I'm just sad. I will miss the pac. But for now, the pac's autobid is all I care about. Ideally, Stanford+Cal decide to headline a rebranded Mountain-Pac conference and they negotiate a decent tv deal based off of that playoff spot alone. Honestly, going to Hawaii/Vegas/Reno beats going to anywhere in Arizona so there's that and WSU is finally going to shake off its little brother rep and not compete as perennial underdogs if a rebrand with the MWC occurs, that's exciting too. Honestly, having reasons to visit Vegas/Hawaii while watching competitive and meaningful games would be nice..so fingers crossed lol CalFord are seeking reputation which is fine, the thing is..there really isn't an academically elite conference anymore so they'll have to compromise there no matter what unless they go indy. The problem there is, OSU might feel more comfortable in the Big 12 if they can't get CalFord on board elsewhere and WSU..well, that'd would leave us..if possible, in an even worse situation than the current one lol. Lots of WSU fans thinking Big12 but honestly, it's all about that cfp spot and if things fall right the MWC presents the best of all current opportunities to do just that. Stanford should grow a spine and trust that its brand is strong as is, and can only get stronger by headlining a conference but what do I know..? But that's the most likely scenario, I think. WSU will commit the MWC and will spend to win, OSU wont be invited to go along with whatever CalFord does and will end up right here with us. CalFord will end up either as independents or they'll realize the whole thing is temporary, park their programs in the Pac-MW for 7 odd years, perhaps play for a national title in that time as they headline a conference, and wait for the 2 superconferences to emerge from all this . I just don't think they'd be ok playing such schools as us even if it is just temporary... I say as "us" because there seems to be this notion that WSU and OSU thinks of themselves as "elite pac-12 teams" vs non p5 teams, but being told that you don't belong by the rest of the pac constantly, or that youre lucky, or on coattails...it gets old quick. We've had our status of a lesser pac team held against us long enough too; glad to be rid of their snooty selves as well honestly if that's the case..elitism is why they're now out begging for a conference in the first place.. Personally, I won't mind it at all. Boise is a good game, the travel is good, and WSU isn't such a little fish anymore...if and only if; the cfp spot remains intact. If it doesn't then WSU has problems beyond football and the state legislature will likely have to get involved. That's why the financial grumblings don't make sense to me. Either the payout from the pac will be enough, if not then the state will have to pony up because wsu's academic infrastructure can't be replaced within the state (huge vet/med/engineering etc school) and there are people's actual lives at stake here. I mean, you can't trade away the buildings.. As far as the apple cup is concerned, the answer is no. UW killed it.The student body wouldn't even allow WSU to face UW every year just to get smacked due to the extreme differences in money and talent, after about the 3rd year of uneven matchups, neither school would want to participate in it anyway, it'd be embarrassing for WSU and cringe for UW. The Apple Cup is dead unless the talent gap doesn't grow..which it will. And before all that? Those games get unruly as it is. I think they'd just be wiser to concentrate on making sure this year's Apple Cup actually gets played first. They're lucky it's in Seattle this year...if it were in Pullman I don't know if that game would even be playable this year. I mean, whenever the Huskies go to Pullman the environment is already a bit too toxic if it's a good year. This year? Oh boy.. And before you come at me with "the paycheck..." umm, yeah, that paycheck is worth way less than constant Ls against UW..if you really think people will stand for it because of money..like, umm, yeah..lots of the people of that mindset in and around Pullman may not even have a job at WSU in a couple weeks. The alumni network is already calling for heads lol... All in all..it won't really matter to us. They tell us in Pullman, once a coug..always a coug lol. We'll support the university regardless because for lots of us..WSU was like your first family away from your only family. It's not really just a school for us..people don't go to WSU just to get an education. I mean, nobody goes to WSU because they want to live in Pullman lol, they go because they want to be a part of and enjoy an actual community beyond just getting the degree.. So, yeah.. go cougs!

  34. Well folks - I don’t post here much anymore because of the regime that now runs the joint but today is an extraordinary circumstance. A few things have become very clear— on the field/court success don’t mean dick. Rivalries and traditions don’t mean dick. The networks control everything. And college sports is not about amateur athletes anymore. If we G5s (yes, even you SUDS) get cut out of the CFP, I’ll stop watching anything outside of our conference. Those mega semi-pro leagues can go +++++ themselves.

  36. I would like to sincerely thank Convert for providing me this opportunity to reassess my opinion of the Peculiar Institution. As a result of my "woke" education in California, I had always viewed slavery in the US as something which tore people from their culture and homeland, transported them across the ocean under inhuman conditions, and then forced them into a life of servitude enforced by corporal punishment, capital punishment, and sexual violence. I now see they error of my ways. US Slavery was instead an (admittedly strict) system of multi-generational occupational training. Those that tried to escape their training and head north were just slackers that couldn't knuckle down and learn a skill. Slaves, err, trainees were imparted with valuable job skills as agricultural laborers, handymen, domestic servants, and nannies. Female slaves were even given sexual training. The best thing about this new view of slavery is the relief it provides me as someone who previously felt unease with the legacy of slavery in our society. I can see now that if, after emancipation and all the investment the country made on training them, black folk didn't amass wealth sharecropping cotton or working as domestic servants, it's on them.

  38. What’s become clear is Republicans like you are neither conservative nor in favor of our constitutional republic. You preach so much about seeking to “restrain the power of the federal government”, but truthfully, most Republicans right now aren't conservatives when it comes to restraints on government power, they just want their specific form of government IN power, by any means necessary. If you need to abandon every principle you claimed to hold dear, every principle the country was founded on, you’ll do it. Just to WIN! What will you win? The ashes of a republic you couldn’t keep.
