I was down in Vegas for some business and was able to get tickets to the BYU UNLV game. a little late though so the tickets were at the lower portion of the upper deck. still not a bad view. and my brother and father were able to drive down and meet me for the game which was nice for me. most of us saw the game and know that UNLV ran away with it early and there have been plenty of threads about the game etc. so a few thoughts and observations that aren't about the game but about the experience.

1) it was nice to have so much parking available right in front of the arena. very nice.

2) horrible job of getting people out of that parking lot after the game.

3) UNLV students were great and the arena has a great feel to it for the home team, almost like a professional arena. I liked having the chair seats up to the top, I wish BYU would cut their seating capacity to 19K and put seats in instead of benches.

4) Students did their "na na na na hey ey ey you suck" chant at BYU as they warmed up, which I assume is a standard chant, it was fun to see them active during warm ups. they continued to do the chant when BYU and UNLV finished warming up and went to their benches at the opposite ends, I figured the students would finish up the cheer then. They continued it on another round as the military guards came out with the flags. and it continued almost until the beginning of the national anthem. even the rebel fans around us noticed and commented how bad it looked. gotta pay attention students.

5) that place can get really loud and crazy when the rebels are playing well, kudos to a nice crowd.

6) the unlv fans in front of us were great and we had a fun banter back and forth for the duration of the game, very pleasant. if all fans were like these I would be proud to be a rebel.

7) the unlv fans behind us were bigots and a bit racist. a lot of "where's your god now" and "those magic undies don't seem to be working" type of comments that really left a bad taste in my mouth from that group. I know every fan base has their idiots, but I would have liked to see the other rebel fans police their own a little more in those situations, the group of Cougars next to them had a couple young kids and it just didn't seem right. I said something to them at the start of the game and tried to be polite but was met with harsh responses. those types of fans would make me sad to be a rebel.

8) The T&M sells a lot of alcohol. I am not for or against it, they had a lot of good food choices there but every other booth seems like it was a beer/tequila stand. a bit of weird feeling after visiting other college arenas that don't allow alcohol sales. this is maybe part of why it felt more like a pro arena. I was very pleased to be able to get my caffinated Dr. Pepper without having to sneak it in.

9) One group of idiots really put me off wanting to return to very nice arena and a mostly pleasant experience (apart from the actual game and the one group). I have a father that is older and also a cancer patient who is very easy to see that he is frail without much strength left (from battling the cancer). a group of what looked to be, 25 year old UNLV fans were jumping through the crowd after the game, proclaiming their superiority and how BYU sucks etc. I am fine with that, no big deal, they were enjoying their afternoon. then they started jumping into BYU fans as they were leaving and then yelling at them. ok, kinda jackassish but whatever. they pass me 6'2 220, my younger brother 6'2 200 and then purposely jump into my 68 year old father, 5'8' 140 lbs, knocking him hard into other people. at this point I grabbed the offender and drug him over and slammed him into the wall and laid into him. He shut up very quickly and his two buddies ran off yelling at me. I will not repeat what I said, I am not all that proud of it, but then again I am not all that ashamed given the circumstances and feeling like they physically attacked my father. any who many of the UNLV fans near by came over and apologized for the actions of the 3 idiots and checked to see that my father was ok. I very much appreciated those fans. so if any of you are here. thank you for your kindness. and subsequently if any of you are the 3 idiots, I meant every word I said to you.

10) apart from the very bad experience leaving the game I was impressed by the production that UNLV has. sporting events are meant as entertainment and UNLV does a fine job of that above and beyond the game.

Good luck the rest of the way unless we meet in the UNLV invitational. :)

wow so happy you decided to share this with everyone here. once again another cougar comes on to tell his sad story about going to another arena.
if only everything was as beautiful and peaceful as it is in cougar town. maybe there should be a law for byu fans to only attend their home games. you always seem to get crazy stories like this with cougars. infact that seems to be the common factor in every story it happened to be a cougar victimized. oh and always some kind of beer involved also!!
poor little cougar fan everywhere you go you are persecuted!!
Has anyone seen my shadow!? Jack!, Jackie!, Jackasss! I'm over here.

you are a complete idiot. I know you have a rough time with reading comprehension. I said I liked there arena and had a pleasant experience apart from 2 very specific small groups. you will hear what you want to hear, but your schtick gets very old very quickly. no support for your supposed team, just hatred towards BYU. where did I cry persecution? I simply wrote up my game day experience which has nothing to do with utah, and yet you get all high and mighty and become some kind of cougar/board police. crawl back into your hole.

Glad you had a good time...I think...did you have a good time? I can't tell.

One comment. I took my Grandma to a game when she was old and frail. We got there early and waited until a lot of fans cleared their seats after the game to leave. I didn't want my Grandma to deal with crowds and the bumping that happens in them. You should have done the same for your father.

Hope he wins the battle, good luck with that.

Next time, give people some time to clear out a bit, the experience will be different.

I don't get you. I can tell you have a big hatred towards BYU, but I fail to see what was so holier than thou that has you upset. was it the compliments to your team, arena, or most of your fans.

For me not to be some cougar jackas$ in your mind I would have to have not had one negative thing to say. you are so worried about the couple negatives that you can't see the multiple positives.

if that stuff really happened to you and your dad then why do you feel the need to share with everyone. keep that stuff toyourself. your only prurpose was to come on here and slander another team with your stories. sure youtyped in some nice things to use as your excuse. but the main reason was to share your sad story.

byu fans always looking to be the victim in something.

I did have a good overall experience. and the bumping and jumping idiots were doing it on purpose. we weren't in the big initial push out after the game.

overall most UNLV fans were gracious and nice, which I pointed out. a few bad apples can have a lasting impression sadly.

So no beer spilled on you or your family. We must have been slacking. ;)

Sorry to hear about the guys at the end of the game. I do find it interesting that you thought it appropriate to put your hands on them. You do realize that little move is assault and considered misdemeanor in the state of Nevada? Also a fine way to get your +++ kicked.

The T&M caters to more than just UNLV basketball, actually a lot more than UNLV basketball, and alcohol sales kinda go hand in hand at a world class arena.

so if you have a negative experience with a cougar fan then why don't you keep it to yourself? the first thing you do is type it on this board.

and no, the point was not just about the one experience, it was about the whole experience at an arena I had never visited before. and I never claimed to be a victim like you want me to or claimed I did.

It sounded a little preachy to me.

I mean, "TM sells a lot of Alchohol" where did that come from?

1) I never said I had a problem with the alcohol sale. just said it was different from most college arenas I've been to. I completely get why it is there though. and I really didn't even notice drunk people at all.

2) I couldn't care less about laying hands on a person who singles out a family member and starts a physical altercation. last thing on my mind. for better or worse it is me.

I'm surprised he didn't get his +++ kicked in that situation.

Assuming it really happened.

You don't get. It a cultural thing I guess. You can't see your original post is littered with backhand compliments.

show me where i have complained of an experience with cougars.

your the one that felt the need to come on and throw rebel fans under the bus.

if you want to share your experience here fine what ever. but don't think because you say some good things that it makes it ok to go off on your bad things.

i still believe your motive was to come on and play the victim of being a cougar fan. "the game was great and all with some fun things, BUT...."

leave the but out. your whole purpose was to slander a fan base. why else did you feel so strong to come and share your bad experience 2 days later?

Only if you allow them to.

If you focus on the positive, you will come away with a better impression and experience. This is true in all aspects of life and whenever you interact with humanity.

I attended a game at BYU a couple of years ago. I sat in front of a real douche bag, he was there with his douche bag family. They kept making comments about UNLVs past, about the tournament being in the T&M, and on and on. He acted like a ++++++ the entire game and I was there with my kids. After the game, on the way out, the fans were great. They were super friendly, very nice, really respectful. I chose to focus on that and formed an opinion that there are multiple types of BYU fans.

Hell, if you sat next to me at the T&M, and were alone, I probably would have offered you a beer.

from seeing a lot of alcohol sales.

only sounds preachy I am assuming because I am a BYU fan and we aren't supposed to drink alcohol thus you assume my comment means I condemn the practice, when I clearly stated it just isn't something I have seen at other college arenas I have visited.

I suspect it's time to start measuring up the T&M again for the "Black Baracade".. UNLV fans are at it again...

Where is good security when you need it?

I've been to the T&M over a dozen times and for some reason, I've never had a problem other than a little friendly banter..

My father's been with me several times and is getting up there in age and he gets around just fine...

I'll refrain from our height and weight for lack of theatrics..

Interesting story though..

the problem is why did you have to state there was alot of alcohol sales going on.

that is what i am talking about here. you said some nice things to justify you going off in other aspects. your whole point was to get the bad out, and in your mind saying some nice things would allow you to do this.

sorry bud but you have been figured out on this one!!

FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well you got 3-4 other guys that have been to the TM and say your comments are backhanded compliments. I don't think you are fooling anyone on here.

Secondly, just judging from your posts, I don't think you ever have been to an arena outside of the Marriot Center.

Exactly. Just think about the out lying circumstances that would have to unfold in order for this to have transpired.

1. Some guys would have had the where with all to single out one man amongst 6 or 7 thousand people working there way to the exit.

2. The OP would have had to find the guy who did it and grab said guy/guys before he slipped into the crowd.

3. He would have had to be on the outter portion of the ring to get to wall to "put someone up against". The inner portion of the ring is not nearly congested as the outer portion.

4. Not one UNLV fan reacted to a BYU fan getting into this guys face.

Yea, this didn't happen. Sorry.

Like I said, the guys in front of us, whom I had the most interaction with, were great, we had a very good time, even though the game sucked from our POV. and after the altercation after the game multiple UNLV fans came up and offered support and concern, they were great. those are they who will have the biggest impact on my experience, not the few bad ones.

either way the next time I am in vegas and there is a game I will probably go, even if it is not a BYU game, since UNLV does a good job with the production and entertainment portion of the game. not sure I want to attend another BYU game there since we never seem to come out on the winning end, stupid Kruger. I used to pencil in the @UNLV game as a loss, I will now put it in pen.

Hell, if you sat next to me at the T&M, and were alone, I probably would have offered you a beer.

Where do you sit?
The sign on the Strip says "Welcome to Las Vegas", but the signs in the Thomas and Mack say "GO HOME"
