Rushing is the primary ill plaguing the team. A full seven teams held New Mexico under 100 yards on the ground (well under; the Lobos' average output in those games: 53 net yards rushing!). In its four other losses, New Mexico managed just over 140 yards rushing, on average. With such low production, losing three starting linemen isn't necessarily a blow, although C Erik Cook is the '09 all-MWC first-team center, and will be missed. All three graduating linemen have experienced backups, perhaps a hopeful sign for more potency on the ground in 2010. All of New Mexico's runningbacks return-- and Demond Dennis improved as the season wore on. As in '09, these fellows will have more to do with their team's success than any other unit.

Elsewhere on offense the team was young; only three seniors were on the two-deep at WR, TE, FB, and QB. Sophomore B.R. Holbrook appears to lead the battle to replace Donovan Porterie under center. Holbrook played in several games this season, without sparking any improvement. He doesn't appear to have much (or any) competition for the starting role yet, however.

On defense, tackle-monster Carmen Messina returns, as do both corners and 3/4 of the line; clearly they need more from the offense to succeed. It does not appear that New Mexico is going to add a deep freshman class to provide that help, however. To date Locksley's crew tops only UNLV in the conference in number of recruits committed so far (eight), and only two of them are defensive players. (Both are linebackers.) Whether the New Mexico staff can bolster its lines with returning or new players remains doubtful, although the jury is still out.

I think the jury's still out to see if we're going to have a deep recruiting class. There's a big difference between a deep recruiting class for TCU/BYU/Utah and a deep recruiting class for UNM. In star rating at least we have more talented players than we typically got under Rocky Long and we still have a lot of guys waiting to commit. It's probably going to be one of the worst-rated classes in the MWC, but New Mexico has always had the worst recruiting in the MWC, except for maybe Air Force.

Otherwise I'd say everything is pretty accurate.

how much do you think Locksley's punch has hurt recruiting?

and about star ratings, trust me: TCU fans have as much reason to hate 'em as anyone. Here're some fun tidbits:
in 2006, four of TCU's lowest rated recruits (all of them lukewarm 2-stars) were:
Jerry Hughes, Marshall Newhouse, Jimmy Young, and Jake Kirkpatrick.

Newhouse and Hughes will be first-day draftpicks this spring, as will Young and Kirkpatrick be, next spring.

It's hard to tell. As I noted, UNM has never been a big player in the recruiting game. All I can say is that once this class is completed I think it will rival the best classes that Rocky Long put together, but that's based all on star numbers and player rankings. It's got to count for something that Locksley is still pulling heavily from the Washington, DC area. I'm betting the punch scandal wasn't nearly as big of news there as it was in the west.

I think our running game will be improved. We were a power running team for so long that I believe it took most of the season for our o-line to adjust. We pulled the redshirt off of Kasey Carrier during the last 1/3 of the year and he really stepped up. He and Demond Dennis are a strong 1-2 punch with very good speed. We have a lot of good young WR's that really started to step up at the end of the season and learn the offense and our freshman TE was on a couple of freshman all-american lists.

I think the O-line will be fine. The key to the offense will, without a doubt, be the QB. We just picked up a three star recruit who played QB in high school but will most likely not play QB for the Lobos: http://rivals.yahoo....hauz-Wray-80789

We are apparantly working hard to get this kid to come to UNM and play QB: http://rivals.yahoo....an-Austin-95470

Whoever we sign, I believe that person will be the QB for us next year not someone who is currently on the roster.

Our defense will be better than most expect next year. Rainey and Latchison were pretty good DE's this year and a lot of people forget that we have two BIG defensive tackles who both transferred from the University of Illinois last year and would've gotten pretty good playing time at Illinois this year. We will have that needed line depth for our new defensive scheme next year.

Rumor has it that we are trying to postpone or cancel our game at Oregon to start the season next year. I'm normally really against these kind of things but I don't think it will be a good idea for such a young and inexperienced team that needs to build confidence to open up at Oregon next year. Hopefully they will postpone it 1 year. We will be better next year but exactly how much better is not known. The way I look at it is that Wyoming went from a team many people were picking to finish 8-9 to a bowl game winner so it isn't impossible for us to make similar improvements.

I think that the punch might have had some short term effects for 1-2 months but Locks is a very personable guy and I don't think it will hurt at all from this point on. Time will tell though.

Recruiting at New Mexico is at an all time high... I have nothing but love for Coach Rocky Long and his staff, but Coach Locksley's recruiting and a superstar clip!

The key for New Mexico in recruiting and the returning players is to convert from the Rocky Long "tough guy" mentality to more of a speed and athletic mentality. The biggest problem for Coach Locksley and recruiting is that we are under probation and only allowed to sign 20 players this year... UNM is currently at number 10 so they are halfway done with their class...

The Lobos are currently trying to secure the services of a QB... Due to our probation I'm thinking only one... Either Ricardo Young (HD Woodson currently listed as a soft verbal to VA Tech) or Tarean Austin (Hillsboro HS, FL)

The emergence of Kasey Carrier also helped push Demond Dennis last year and as the Lobos were in more games towards the end of the season they were running more. Look for huge years from Dennis and Carrier this year...

WR looks good as young Michael Scarlett should be back and the Lobos receive an influx of young RS and true freshmen this year... Lucas Reed was a frosh All-American and the Lobos also have picked up an 2nd Team All-State Texas TE from Sealy (Bradley Miller)

O-line will be young except for Bell and Canon... However, they are an athletic line.

Defensive line is unbelievable this year and is added by transfers (who will be eligible this year) Ugo Udzomina and Reggie Ellis (both transfers from Illinois)

LB crew was solid, they lose a pair of seniors this year but nationwide leader Carmen Messina is back, guys like Joe Stoner and possibly Joe Harris and Spencer Merrit fill in. UNM has also picked up a pair of young LB's so far that will help.

Defensive backfield was one of the toughest spots for the Lobos last year... Look for that to really pick up as UNM has already picked up two speedy DB's and should hook up with a couple more in the next few weeks...

RedMenace:

Tell me: what the heck happened to the Lobos in 2009? Y'all were just as high on UNM going into the season as you are now... but clearly you're expecting different results in 2010.

Yeah I was high on it... I got caught up in the XBox mentality that you can just change your entire offense and defense and that all the players will automatically do what you ask of them... Just didn't happen that way... As the season progressed started to see things to build upon, and of course there was an off the field incident that took a lot of time away from coaching...

I look for some big differences in 2010 starting with the QB position... Having Kasey Carrier and Demond Dennis in the backfield will help, and of course having some speedy wide outs...

On defense the D-Line will be much improved as will the defensive backfield...
