Thursday 8-16
North of the border: Get to know UNLV’s opponents on its Canadian tour

The first game, against powerhouse Carleton University on Saturday, may be the stiffest test the Rebels face while abroad.

The Ravens are the two-time defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) champions and have won eight such titles in the past 10 years.
Last year, Carleton went 28-0 and defeated opponents by an average of about 38 points per game en route to another title in the CIS, which is an eight-team tournament that determines Canada’s national champion.

I wish Birch,Bennett,Smith were allowed to play. This first game should be really tough. They came within 2 points of beating Kansas last year.

Yeah I had to watch play-by-play on Twitter. CU is a really good team.

Lots of spin over by rebelnet...UNLV only beat Carleton 74-70??...Uh they're like a D-3 equivalent. Or is this the part where we pretend Carelton is some kind of powerhouse? Sounds like the perimeter D is still terrible (gave up 7 threes in the 1st half alone)--Looking forward to seeing how Birch, Bennett, and possibly Smith improve this team.

Atleast Reinhardt had a good game w/ 19 pts...Big-time 3pt shooter.
Dave Rice is not HC material, and will underachieve at UNLV. Every year he is the HC is one year removed UNLV will be from national prominence.

Cu has won 6 of the last 8 national champinships. They return like 4 5 year starters. Kansas won by 2 points last year to CU. This is UNLV's first game they have played 3,000 miles away and has woken up by a false fire alarm at 4am. We are also without Bennett,Birch. Get a grip we won.

These trips are not about wins and losses. It's more for team bonding and getting guys to buy into the team concept. Remember UNLV has 8 new players this season.

I know this team they played today was 34-0 last year and has won the Canada college national title the last 2 years and 8 of the last 10. I don't know what their equal would be to an American team but I don't think it would be D-3.

Personally I wouldn't have minded a loss. I think you can learn more from losing than you can by winning, especially when you are young. But I'm not concerned on whether UNLV wins the rest of the games or loses them. These don't matter. I'm much more concerned about the players learning what they are expected to do on the floor and getting the feel of each other on the court.

Anthony Marshall would disagree: "We're not going out to sightsee or take a little vacation," senior guard Anthony Marshall said. "Our goal is to win ballgames."

Let's get real, this isn't the outcome most wanted to see. You want to see your team's elite talent produce elite results on the court. These players are too good for that patronizing bullsh*t you and djv are spewing and I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate it either. Even the RJ's Matt Youmanns was commenting on how this team was looking alot like they did in Feb-March earlier this year.

Pump Carleton all you want, UNLV still played bad.

Well I guess Kansas really suck also. Of course they look alot like UNLV last year Bennett,Birch and Smith have not even practiced yet. You and RR are debbie downers. We won so that's good enough for me.

I do want to see my team produce elite results on the court, IN MARCH, when it counts.

What you don't seem to get is that Rice is looking at these games just to get a little experience for the new players on the roster and the 10 extra days of practice time. The results don't matter. Carleton returned 4 5th year starters, scouted us, and were at home. We went in without scouting at all and just played. And still won. And don't forget this is a team that has won 34 games in a row. We've only had 10 practices.

Fans like you bother me. It's an exhibition and the first one at that and you expect perfection. I have zero problem with criticism when it is warranted but this is silly. You haven't even seen a tape of the game, or know ANYTHING about the opponent. Stop acting like this is the NCAA tournament or even a regular season game. You cant expect elite performances in August.

Thats what's so laughable about him. He didn't see the game or even a boxscore but he's an expert on it.
Rice played 10 players about 11 minutes each and tried out multiple lineups on the court. He did all this against Canada's best team on their home court and yet still came out on top on the scoreboard.

He's just happy he's found something to criticize about the team. It makes his day.

I just logged in to say how big of a fukcing idiot Rebels18 sounds like..

Did you just start watching basketball?

Marshall and Moser having new roles.
BDJ's first game in a UNLV uniform since transferring a year and a half ago.
3 potential redshirts playing 11+ mins each.
None of our Canadian powerhouse All American Forwards. (Birch and Bennett since you probably don't even know that much)

First "game" after two weeks of practices in the beginning of AUGUST.

LOL, please just shut the fukc up and let the big boys talk.
This team is set to strive by the time we play in Chapel Hill.

BTW. Reinhardt led the team with 19 points. Solid game. Thrives in the spotlight and plays so confident. Definitely going to help produce his freshman year.

You're just upset I ruined your little game of withholding the score. I have never claimed to be an expert, I read the same LVsun/goravens articles as you did and followed the updates on rebelnet. Obviously the game has no real meaning. But they played below everyone's expectations and you know it. Get realistic, a 4pt win against Carleton isn't what any true fan REALLY wanted or expected. That's all I said, they played below expectations against n inferior team and even noted positively that Reinhardt played great, and they weren't at full-strength with Bennett/Birch/Smith* out.

I don't look for excuses to criticize my team, I just have higher expectations..Rather than make these pitiful little excuses: "they scouted us" "we were on the road" "the fire alarm woke them up at 4am" "first game"--  It was an exhibition game for Carleton too guys. God, if this was UNM/SDSU's exhibition you would all be laughing your a.sses off at all these excuses...You guys are an embarrassment

I almost half expected a loss. I knew that this Canadian team was no pushover and that they were real experienced. We've got a lot of youth on this team and to expect them to travel 3,000 miles and beat the Canadian champ by 30 on their court without our 2 best forwards, is a little unreasonable in my opinion. The great aspect of a game like this, is they did win, and they probably got to learn a lot in the process. The sheer game experience with each other is also invaluable at this stage in the year as well.

We're the embarrassment? There is a reason everyone is calling you a dumbass... Maybe take a step back and look at how stupid and uninformed you sound.
