more unecessary gun deaths (sad ... as the rest of the world laughs at us)

WELLSVILE, Cache County — A 2-year-old boy has died after being accidentally shot by his 3-year-old sister.

The Wellsville boy was shot in the stomach with a .22-caliber rifle Friday evening. He underwent surgery at Logan Regional Hospital and was later flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, but he died late Friday night, Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson said.

Investigators learned the the gun had been used by the children's father earlier in the day and was set down in the living room when he returned home, Peterson said. The gun was unloaded, but there were live rounds in the magazine, he said.

responses I'm expecting ...

- clearly this 3 year old was mentally ill, the problem isn't the gun but mental illness.

- if the 3 year old had access to a hammer, knife or a car this STILL would have happened.

- more guns is the answer ... if the 2 year old would have been armed the 3 year old would have been scared off, essentially defusing the situation.

- the father was justified leaving the gun out in the living room, cause you never know when the Gubernment will try to take control.  You have to be ready at a moments notice cause you know Obama wants to take your guns, he's just waiting for the right moment.

have I forgot any?

How many children died in car accidents yesterday- or are those not considered "unnecessary"?

Because someone left a loaded car in the living room?

PS: More people now die from from gunshot wounds than car accidents in this country.

Deaths because of suicide and accidental shootings don't count as "gun violence."

They do to liberals.

- clearly this 3 year old was mentally ill, the problem isn't the gun but mental illness.  Come on man...really?

- if the 3 year old had access to a hammer, knife or a car this STILL would have happened. People who support gun rights don't believe this.  This was an accident.

- more guns is the answer ... if the 2 year old would have been armed the 3 year old would have been scared off, essentially defusing the situation. Again....come on

Better outlaw boats too.

The craft was about half full. Of the 462 passengers aboard, 325 of them were students from a high school in Ansan city, near Seoul. Fifteen teachers were escorting them on a four-day trip to Jeju island to see the wonders of the volcanic formation, the waterfalls and lava tubes nestled by the country's tallest peak.

Amazingly The US is not number 1 in gun murders it is number 28 with most of the 27 countries in front of it outlawing guns totally.

http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/jul/22/gun-homicides-ownership-world-list

But the US does not have the worst firearm murder rate - that prize belongs to Honduras, El Salvador and Jamaica. In fact, the US is number 28, with a rate of 2.97 per 100,000 people

Buses and boats are made for transportation. Guns are made for killing.

Guns are made for freedom.  Guns are security for woman and children and proof against criminals and government alike.

Guns are why you have a freedom to speak.

Guns are why you have any rights at all.

Guns are why my daughter can go anyplace she wants and need not be intimidated because she is small and not as strong as others.

Guns are why Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama are still alive.

Guns are why I just don't take what i want from my neighbor, because otherwise I certainly could.

Comparing apples to apples- you are wrong on so many levels- in 2009 223 children 14-and-under died of accidental firearms incidents. The same year, 1,314 died in MVA's. The MVA is the leading cause of death in children 14-and-under.

As for total deaths, sorry, but in 2009 MVA's killed almost 10,000 more people than firearms (which includes suicides, accidental shootings, and homicides).

And yet methods of transportation account for far more deaths than guns, which, while they can be used to kill (same as a vehicle) aren't necessarily possessed or purchased for that purpose.

The only reason you don't steal from your neighbor is because he has a gun?

Doesn't really matter in terms of morality. Meta to the moral concept you're trying to pitch is that there are thefts not happening because of the possible presence of firearms.

People have to undergo safety training and when done they get a certificate to prove they know how to drive a car.  Same should be true for a gun since, as you point out, they are similar to guns.

People ave to undergo safety training and get a license to prove they know how to drive a car

But you don't have to have either in order to actually purchase a car.

When I was growing up in Laramie, a gun safety course was part of junior high PE curricula and requisite to obtaining a hunting license, I have zero problem with such a thing...

Are you sure that the supposed training and subsequent certification helps anything? Safety rules are violated all the time. It all goes back to personal responsibility. My kids know exactly what to do if they happen to see my guns laying about. Not that I ever leave them outside of their gun locks or outside of the gun safe, but the kids still know to leave the gun alone and come get me

I think it is safe to say that hunter safety programs have saved lives from hunting accidents and yes first time gun buyers who have never owned or handled a gun before can benefit from some safety training.
