Fores college rankings

Recommended Posts

Last I checked, I think Fresno and SJSU were tied at 36 in USNWR's Western Regionals U classification...we're more alike than anyone wants to admit.  I'm sure it's nice to be near the top, but I think many know that a lot of these commercial rankings (and the methodology used) are just a bunch of voodoo and popularity contests.

Agreed. As an example, SDSU always rates pretty high because we have the hottest chicks. (Doesn't explain UNLV's pathetic rating, however.)

Boom goes the dynamite.

I'm not comparing Houston to the CSU's, because it seems like I had been repeatedly led to believe that it is a great school, on par with some other great schools, I assumed in the mid 100's for a list like this, maybe clipping 100 for USNWR.  So because  of preconception that it was a really good school, it did seem low.  Just kind of surprised.

Who do you keep hearing that from? I'm a Houston grad and I don't think anyone that's graduated from there or familiar with Texas Universities would argue that it's anywhere near schools like Baylor, TCU, SMU, Rice, Texas or A&M. It's always been more of a Texas Tech type school which isn't saying a whole lot.

CSU AD Jack Graham - “If you get outside our borders, no one knows who we are. I was in Phoenix (last week) for the Mountain West meetings and there was a reception with all of the athletic directors. The bartender said to me, ‘Colorado State, where are you guys, Boulder?’ I’ve gotten that all my career. No one knows us outside our own boundaries."

A few Houston guys I know who either go there or know people, a few Coogs on this board, I distinctly remember talking to one of the more troll guys (Definitely not Coog Kev or the ones on the baseball thread) who kept throwing endowment and all this other craziness during one of the last USNWR threads, saying something about why it is super flawed, and this that and the third.  Figured with the different people telling me the same thing, maybe they were on to something.  I didn't hear any of them compare themselves to Rice or SMU, maybe TCU and Baylor though.

Don't RAGE, BSU is pretty high if you only consider FBS schools.

I wonder what the rankings for FBS schools only is?

LOL, don't RAGE but nobody give two chits about you or UNM.  :)

You're the only one who rages on this board. That's been proven. Nobody has ever flipped off the handle like that time I made you. And no smiley face on your post will ever change that.

That simply doesn't matter.

Myself nor anybody in the history of this board has never pathetically raged like I made you that one time. All because of a picture of a boat too.

LMAO

Chill dude, it's ok. Remember, this is just a messageboard.

I thought the Pac-12 cared about academics? It's like their one rule.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I used to play softball with guys from Chicago and Minneapolis who attended Arizona State because they couldn't get into any of the four California Pac-12 schools nor to the U of A. Last I heard, ASU still admits every single qualified in-state applicant. And when my dad was practicing law 30 years ago, the board of directors of a nonprofit organization client had to pay him to negotiate a buyout of the general manager's 5-year contract after just two years because the guy was so incompetent. The board had hired the dude rather than competitors for the position mainly because he had a PhD from ASU. I could go on but the point is ASU might be as overrated academically as any school in the country so I'm glad to see that Forbes has exposed the Sun Devil behind the curtain.

Blah. Bigger universities have had worse. E.g. USC  has OJ. and Harvard has Ted Kaczynski aka The Unabomber.

Arguably Duke's three most famous alumni are Richard Nixon, Tucker Max, and Miriam Weeks (aka Belle Knox aka "the Duke porn star"). And Duke people get all sensitive when you tell them that Duke has a "douchebag" reputation. :)

And the best part is that despite the fact that ASU admits basically all qualified in-state applicants, the average SAT scores of ASU students is still significant better than that of SDSU students. Indeed, SDSU is below USU based on SAT scores, and USU basically admits everyone with a pulse. If ASU supposedly has poor academics, then I shudder to think about SDSU.

Smack aside, I've always said that ranking schools based on the quality of their admitted freshmen is a stupid. If a university has the best professors, the best research, and the largest endowment, why is it a negative if they try to educate as many students as possible rather than only rich kids who could afford SAT tutors? Berkeley is one of the top five universities in the world by any reasonable criteria, but somehow it barely cracks the top 40 of these rankings. If you look at the faculty or research productivity of the PAC-12, they are all ahead of the MWC schools. Well, CSU, UNM, and maybe Hawaii are as good as the Oregon schools and maybe ASU and WSU. But overall the PAC-12 has a virtual monopoly on the top research universities in the western U.S. The fact that some ranking created by Forbes that uses data from ratemyprofessors.com gives some PAC-12 schools a lower ranking doesn't change that.
