Hold on now....something is wrong with those numbers. Boise, and the rest of the WAC, are on ESPN all the time. Nobody even cares about the MWC because we aern't on so-called national TV. Are you sure Boise or the Truck Stop bowl aren't in the top two or three?

This is the best proof on Earth that CBS can be successful with a MWC champion. Dump the over-rated Big Easy team and replace them with the MWC champion.

This is obvious and probably doesn't need to be said, but I'll say it anyways: UCLA, Navy, and Cal had something to do with those MWC bowl ratings.

And what about Nevada? The NM Bowl's ratings were just below the other MWC bowls.

And, by your logic, what happened with the Boise Bowl? No one's interested in GaTech and Fresno? Come on now.

We;re talking a full 1 million viewers less than even the NM Bowl.

Yes, the Boise bowl had competition and the NM Bowl did not.

BTW, If the MWC champ was in the Sun Bowl, don't you think the Pac-10 team would also contribute? A BYU-Oregon rematch (that would've been this year's Sun Bowl) would be pretty compelling.

Anyway... this peeing contest sure is fun, but meaningless.

And to think BSU & Fresno State were looking down at the New Mexico Bowl, which had the veiwership of both the Bowls they were in. Maybe the WAC should be sending their Champ to the New Mexico Bowl for some exposure..LOL :P

As for the Sun Bowl, well personally it looks like it's starting to lose some luster. Give it a few years & the Las Vegas Bowl will over take it in viewership. Just think if the Vegas Bowl was on CBS.... :o I don't think we need the Sun Bowl, we just need to GROW the Bowls we have now. :D

I'm going to slightly counter you. I assume that you are referring to how the LV Bowl had ratings that were close to the Sun Bowl. I will counter you that timeslot may have had something to do with it. The Las Vegas Bowl was in primetime, on a Saturday and the only possible option against it was the NFL game on NFL Network. So the LV Bowl had a pretty good audience and a solid time to roll with. The fact that the game went down to the final gun kept the audience there.

The Sun Bowl was at 2pm ET. Since the game was played on New Years Eve and it fell on a Monday, some people did go to work (myself included) or were making afternoon preparations for parties, etc. There was also other bowl games being played at that time (Armed Forces at 12:30pm, Humanitarian at 2pm, Music City at 4pm). And the game was a disaster shortly after halftime, so folks were tuning out.

To have that many viewers on a cable game vs. an over-the-air game is impressive though.

Lessons learned from the bowl ratings

Don't sign a contract to play games on NFL network

Don't sign a contract to play games on ESPN2

Don't sign a contract to play in a bowl game after New Year's Day

And don't play a bowl game opposite a widely viewed NFL game

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl: East Carolina 41, Boise State 38, ESPN:

1,415,395 went up against Redskins-Vikings on NBC

PetroSun Independence Bowl: Alabama 30, Colorado 24, ESPN:

1,828,965 went up against Titans-Colts on NBC

Valero Alamo Bowl: Penn State 24, Texas A&M 17, ESPN:

2,568,881went up against Patriots-Giants on NFL Network/CBS/NBC

Only the Pats-Giants game was not a game for playoff seeding, but it carried the weight of the Pats' undefeated regular season.

Inevitably, fans of conferences will use TV ratings to show their teams or conferences are "more popular". As the last few posts show, the biggest determinants are what network the game is on, what day the game is on, and the time slot and what other competition (especially the NFL) is on. If there is a team with a more national following or ranked teams that can make a difference, but can't always overcome the above factors as the Texas A&M/Penn St game showed.

Particularly in the case of the Alamo Bowl, the decision to allow CBS and NBC to carry the Pats-Giants game had to be a killer. The week before the game only the NFL Network is carrying Pats-Giants and ESPN probably has a much larger rating for the Alamo Bowl. The NFL made their decision on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve I think and it totally killed any solid ratings for the ESPN game.

I believe that the Alamo Bowl ratings were down a ridiculous amount too, something like 33% over the previous year.

Matt- do you think CBS should have put the Sun on the 29th instead of the 31st, because it was a work day for some. Odd they didn't move it. The 29th had much better ratings overall, except for the Alamo.

The bigger question is why has there been such a decline in ratings since 2003.

2001 - 3.8 (Washington St vs Purdue)

2002 - 3.2 (Purdue vs Washington)

2003 - 3.1 (Minnesota vs. Oregon)

2004 - 2.8 (Arizona St vs Purdue)

2005 - 2.6 (Northwestern vs UCLA)

2006 - 2.4 (Oregon St vs Missouri)

2007 - 2.5 (Oregon vs USF)

Very fair point.

That 2001 game was played on a Monday. 2001-2004 were played on New Year's Eve.

Bowl games that would have been around the same time slot as the Sun Bowl

2001- Humanitarian Bowl (ESPN2), Liberty (ESPN), Silicon Valley (FSN)

2002 - same as 2001

2003 - Liberty (ESPN) & Music City (ESPN)

2004 - same as 2003

2005 - Music City (ESPN) & Independence (ESPN)

2006 - Music City (ESPN) & Liberty (ESPN)
