I've watched all of your games on the Mtn and have followed some of your players for the past few years. I think you guys have a great coach and some phenomenal players. My question is two fold: how satisified are you with the job that Coach Boylen is doing and how satisfied are you with your teams' record and success thus far? Rivalry aside, I think Neville is easily one of the top 3 big men in the conference and IMO I would rank him #2 behind Plaisted. I've watched Shawn Green for a few years and think he is a great role player. Bryant obviously is a baller and one of the best shooters in the conference. Kepkay is relatively unknown to many MWC fans but I followed him before he came to Utah and I think his stats have transferred over nicely. He's a great scorer and will be well known by next year. You also have some depth on the bench. Based on the players and staff you have I wouldn't have predicted 6 losses already. Any thoughts on what you think the program is lacking or reasons for the record you have?

Methinks you're far too heavy of a "glass-half-full" kind of guy.

While I believe we have a great coach, I do not think we have phenomenal players....I think we're good, but not phenomenal.

Coach Boylen came in and restored order to a Utah team that was terrible on defense last year. Our defense is vastly improved. Only recently has he started to place more attention and practice time to offense. Boylen's playbook is enormous, and he himself stated that it will be difficult for the team to pick up.

Nevill is the girl you got to 2nd base with as a senior, but she wouldn't let you go any further. Funny how a guy can peak his freshman year in a game against BYU. Some games he's great...others, he seems to dissappear. It's no secret that he is soft.

I agree with you on Green and Bryant.

Here are our problems (IMHO)

Our PG play is weak. Kepkay has struggled, Drca turns it over far too much, and Bryant is a SG.

We have no front-court depth. After Deane was released from the program, Weigh has now left, and Tillie has been hurt, we are very thin. We are relying on underclassmen Brown and Grimm. While they may keep improving...they are very inexperienced.

Our FT situation is horrible. We never get to the line...and when we do, we don't make many of them. (especially since conference play has started)

We don't have a "go-to guy". When the game is on the line at the end of the game, we can't get anything going.

I personally think Boylen will put the Utes back at the top of the conference in the next couple years. Even separating myself from my homerism....I think this will be the case.

Go Utes!!

I agree with this.

It's sometimes frustrating to watch them lose these close games, but I couldn't watch them at all last year. Boylen is the right long term hire we need. There's no doubt in my mind. I can't wait to see the type of players he brings in. Right now our guys can and will compete. I see Utah returning back to the top in 2 or 3 years.

Go Utes!!!

Utah has some talent and honestly since I don't see a lot of future NBA players in the MWC right now Utah should be on near-equal grounds with the better teams in the MWC.

I think "phenomenal player' is not a term I would use for any Ute:

Nevill is one of the top 3 big men in the conference but the conference is not strong in big men.. He has also has some struggles adjusting to a new system. Luke is not as big a focus of the Utah offense under Boylen as he was under Giacoletti and he has been asked to expend a lot more energy on defense this year. Utah fans have been had on Luke but I think his reduction in offensive numbers are balanced by an improvement in his floor game. Still Luke is a weapon but, not a superstar.

Green is a "good" role player but I don't know about a "great" role player... He is not an Alex Jensen, or Britton Johnsen.

Bryant is a great shooter... He is not a great driver though (he can hit the pull-up though)... and has really mentally and emotionally developed this year. He is not a point guard either.

Kepkay has struggled I think... there have been flashes of his scoring potential but they are flashes not consistent threats and his assist numbers are shockingly bad for a point guard.

In fairness part of Kepkay's low assist total has been the fact that Luca Drca has done a lot of the creating for Utah and he is Utahs best passer... But, he really doesn't handle the ball well enough to be a "true point" his is more of a "point forward."

Howeve I do not want to undersell the Utes either along with Borha and the freshman Carlon Brown the Utes have some weapons but, they lack a true point guard and the real killer is front court depth.

With the decision not to sign a JC big man, the academic failure of Dean, the injury and "retirement" of Steven Weigh and the stress fracture for Kim Tillie the Ute front court is decimated... There is nothing behind Nevill and Green and they are playing extended minutes and that is hurting them in late game situations.

W/O Tillie the Utes have one Center, one Forward, and a roster of Guards...

I actually came across a blog from Greg Wrubell on KSL.com. http://www.ksl.com/?nid=498&sid=2541991 It says that BYU and Utah are both tied for the best MWC conference record since the inception of the conference in 1999. Both teams stand at 76-44. With Boylen as your head coach I predict your upcoming seasons get better and better and the competition for all-time MWC record should be fairly close if not back and forth.

I agree with Vegas. And I think your correct with your impressions TrueCoug. However, I'm cautiously optimistic (remember that Giac went to the tourney the first year). But I think that Boylen is the right long term hire. The improvement in defensive effort alone at this point of the year honestly exceeded my expectations, and granted losses are losses, but we're in the fight just about every game. As Vegas said, and I agree, now the focus turns to O while still maintaining strong D. Our offens will improve each week, but the rate limiting step will be acquiring a true point guard....I think our gaurds are good, but none of them are true points.

Nothing to really say here.....except GO MWC!!
