Quinton Watkins Is An Aztec

Recommended Posts

Aztec will lose 1 player next year, a 3rd string point guard. They have just added a 4 star shooting guard that USC and Illinois were real happy when he committed to them. He didn't finish some high school stuff so his recruiting opened up again and the Aztecs were there to reap the rewards.

For those who were real tired of Brandon Heath....guess what.

They just gave Kobe Bryant eligibility because he never played NCAA, and he commited to UNLV. We aint skeered.

Finally a release from the University

West coast recruiting analyst Greg Hicks (Scout.com) rates Watkins as the second-best shooting guard prospect in California, behind Arizona State recruit and McDonald's All-American James Harden. "Basically I think he's got a pretty big upside. He's a very good athlete and an explosive leaper," said Hicks, who has known Watkins since the latter was an eighth-grader. "He's a good defender. I think he has a chance to be a really good defender once he's taught some things, just because of the kind of athlete he is. His outside shot has improved fairly dramatic in the last year. Now, when he gets an open shot and gets his feet set and he's in a rhythm, he's making shots consistently."

Looks like a very good get. This conference is improving quickly. It's a struggle just to keep up.

Sure, looks great, but we could really use a center.

No complaints, though. Hopefully he'll turn out as advertised.

Something else interesting:

Rivals rated New Mexico's 4-star SG Recruit Phillip McDonald as the #20 SG in the country. Watkins is rated the #19 SG in the country. Looks like this two will battle for 4 years.

And we still have Richie and Kelvin Davis for next year, and DJ for another 3! Two years from now, it will be the DJ and Quinton Show!

From what I've seen and get the sense of, UNLV UNM and SDSU are really stepping it up in the type of talent that they're bringing in. Rose has established a steady and improving program at BYU and I like the mindset that Broylen has begun to instill in the Utes. TCU is also bringing in some players that are above their normal realm of recruit. I would however, be worried if I was a fan on the front range, the above five (Minus TCU)seem to be establishing themselves as the future contenders at least in the short run.

On the whole though, the conference is on the Up and Up, and we should witness the improved product within the next couple years.

I wouldn't call him a true center, but remember, we have the 6-9 Cheriet coming from the JC in Arizona next year. At least he adds a little height to the squad.
