Recruiting! Rank your class

Recommended Posts

BYU didn't have any "big stars" this year. There is a lot of talent though. I'm more excited to see some of our 07 class play next year.

I am not sure what you mean by "big stars"? We have one recriut that is going to be playing in the US Army Bowl High School game which is the biggest game for top high school players in the country. We may have another top Lb that is visitng BYu soon that is giving signals that he may decommit from UCLA now that Dorrell was fired. We also have some serious players coming to visit in January that if we get them will make this class way better then last years class. But I'll tell you what, I think what is speaking more about this year is the recriuts we already have commited for 2009. Two 4 star recriuts that have a serious shot at being top 100 and a serious shot at landing one of 2009's likely top 10 to 15 recritu and the best player to ever come out of Hawaii. From what I have heard it is pretty much between BYU and USC with BYU having a very favorable position. I think it is safe to say BYU has felt no effect from the horrible TV deal.

For UNLV is don't think there are any real newsworthy recruits.............seems that every "highly rated" recruit UNLV has garnered over the past few years has been way over rated and not lived up to the hype.

Aaron Straiten was a 3 or 4 star type of WR coming out of JC, and was hyped as a speed burner with comparisons to Keyshon Johnson...........yes he was over shadowed during his 2 year stint by a freshman & sophmore and was a 3rd or 4th option in most cases.

Recruiting is an inexact science, and unless your program is recruiting some of the top 100 recruits it's all speculation and hoping for the best...........while some walkon makes the real impact!

Austin Holt is a Top 100 recruit, do they get any bigger than that? Plus they are still recruiting players like Hamani Stevens (4 stars, #5 C), Uona Kaveinga (4 stars, #13 WLB), O'Neill Chambers (3 stars, WR), and Kedron Paul.

Hamani Stevens 6' 2" 290 ©- Offers from schools like; Oregon, UCLA, Arizona St, Colorado, Michigan St, and ect...

Uona Kavienga 6' 1" 225 (LB)- Offers from schools like; USC, Arizona, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Georgia Tech, and ect...

O'Neil Chambers 6' 3" 205 (WR)- Offers from schools like; Iowa St, Texas Tech, Mississippi St, Maryland, Purdue, South Carolina,, and ect...

Kedron Paul 5' 9" 165 (DB)- Offers from schools like; Purdue, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Mississippi St, and ect...

BYU's class for 2008 is solid. I personally liked 2007 better but this one could turn out every bit as good if Bronco and company can land some of the remaining "big guns". I don't expect that to happen but the potential is there.

2009 for BYU will be HUGE. I'm calling it right now. As good as Bronco has recruited at BYU the 2009 class will be the best by far.

From what I've read O'Neil Chambers and Kedron Paul are best friends and plan on playing for the same D1 school. According to O'Neil it looks like it's down to Purdue and BYU for their services. IMO, that's pretty good odds. I read months ago that Uona Kavienga mother is really sold on what Bronco is do at BYU. BYU is currently in Hamani Stevens top 5, with Oregon currently setting on top, but that came after his visit to Oregon here at the beginning of the month. All 4 with trip to BYU on recruit week (January 12th) with the other 20+ BYU verbal recruits.

I personally think that nobody has any idea how good a certain recruit will do. Case in point: Harvey Unga. He was a 2 star recruit. That's right, the MWC Freshman Player of the Year was a 2 star. Beau Bell, the Defensive Player of the year was also a 2 star. I couldn't find any info on Chad Hall. So I think that it is nearly impossible to tell how much a player is going to contribute, and I would love to know how they determine stars for recruits.

TCU will have a small class this year with only about 17 or 18 kids, but it looks solid so far. A couple of talented OL have already committed, including 1 JUCO guy. TCU is still looking to land a RB in this class. 4 star prospet LaMicheal James is between TCU, Nebraska, and Minnesota and he is visiting Nebraska this weekend. If he does not commit this weekend to the Huskers, then I think TCU has a solid chance at landing the kid. TCU has also offered some JUCO WRs and a RB, which I think it a attempt to jumpstart the offense a bit from where it was this season. TCU only has 8 commits so far, but two are from out of state. A JUCO OL from Kansas and a WR from Tennessee.

That was my point as well. By saying our 2008 class doesn't have "big stars" I meant no 5 stars or many 4 stars. Sure we are recruiting guys that are but I doubt we land them. Holt is by far our biggest get this class and will be solid. But I'm more excited as well to see our 2007 class in action. That was a great class and should see them on defense next season. We can name a list a mile long of guys we are recruiting who we wish we get but all those guys previously mentioned aren't locks and from other sources I don't put all my stock into them coming to the Y. Sorry to those that may think I'm not hyping up our recruiting class this year but I just don't see it being as good as last year that is all. It even looks like the gap between the next best team in the conference is now smaller with Utah having a big recruiting year so far.

CSU is not to good now but I'll wait till signing day to make a final determination.

Once Fairchild gets out there and closes some deals I think CSU will be OK.

Right now I would say DB Davis Burl is our best guy, was ranked 20 in Colorado's top 25 this year.

Here is what the Aztec's class looks like at the moment per Rivals. As you can see Long and Staff are busy bringing in more beef. It is a definite need on both sides of the LOS. For what it's worth, 3 are rated 3 star everyone else has 2.

SIGNED LETTER OF INTENT

Drew Westling QB 6-3 225 Will enroll at the semester break; definitely fills a need here as we had no Jr QB in the program. RS at Tulsa before returning to SoCal

COMMITTED/NOT YET SIGNED

Aaron Brewer ATH 6-5 210 Recruited as a long snapper

Nik Embernate OL 6-5 285

Alec Johnson OL 6-4 295

Dominque Sandifer WR 6-0 170

Brian Stahovich K 6-0 170

A great dose of realism. Austin Collie was a 3 star recruit...and he'd start at most programs in the country right now. The recruiting systems are guesses...the kids are not quite 'cooked' yet. They have maturing, skill improvement, growth to go through. Even by the time of the NFL draft it's still hard to rate them...as many NFL draft picks are misses.

In my mind, most 4 and 5 star recruits are kids that mature early - who have success by being men among boys - or who have in some cases already maxed out their play. There are a lot of diamonds in the rough.

The real value of a class is determined at least 2 years later (or four in the case of Missionaries) when they're upper classmen.

Recruit ratings are quite possibly the most specious meaningless thing to wrangle about on internet message boards. So of course, they're one of the hot topics ;)

I would think in most cases a coach will recruit to the type of athlete he needs for his program instead of some super stud who would be an imbalance. He couldn't assimilate with the team. It's OK if you have several of these kind of guys like USC, but sometimes their egos get in the way. Screw these recruiting gurus with their star system. If a coach is good at spotting talent, he won't need to star search.

I have always liked looking at a kids other offers to get a quick guage of the level of player he is, the coaches are much better talent evaluators than the guys at scout or rivals. Of course there is also a downside to this as some kids will commit early after their first offer (which happens a lot with LDS kids with a BYU offer) therefore they do not pick up as many offers as a less talented player who sits on the market until signing day.
