DirecTV question

Recommended Posts

For obvious reasons I am looking at switching from Dish to DTV. However, my wife needs her local channels and DircTV doesn't provide them in my area. So I called DTV today and wasted close to an hour of my time with a customer service agent who seemed confused at my question.

I want to know if there is anyone out there that uses an over-the-air antenna with their DirecTV Service and if you can record your OVER THE AIR PROGRAMMING to the DVR. Dish network allows this because their receivers have three tuners in them. Does anyone know this answer. I would like to start the switch soon.

LOl Reb I live in Billings as well. I am going to have Bresnan Cable and a minimum DTV package of basic + sports package and maybe sunday ticket.

Call Bresnan and let them know you would switch if they carried teh mtn. They stop at the Wyo border. I know they thought about it due to my previous converstions with them

Bresnan doesn't have cable out in my area (Billings Heights). We are serviced by USA Digital for cable and internet. Though that didn't stop me from calling Bresnan and telling them to get the mtn. Afterall, their Sheridan, WY signals get piped out of the Billings station. I did tell them that I would switch even though I knew that I couldn't. I even posed as a Wyoming fan when I called thinking they would have more representation up here :D I just think everyone should carry the channel.

I have DirecTV in Tampa and use their HD DVR. It will accept three inputs and record two while you watch one. I currently have two inputs from the dish so I can watch one and record the other. My third is unused, but will support an over-air HD antenna.

Don't know about the recording question, but I do no I was able to acquire the locals I wanted by telling a little fib. :o We live 120 miles east of SD and so to acquire SD locals, which is what we wanted, I sent them an e-mail telling them that I had relocated to an address in SD, but that my billing address would remain the same as it was. (I used my parents address from SD as they will never be satellite subscribers). About 8 hours later we had SD locals out here in the Imperial Valley. Don't know if that would work for you or not, but it worked great for us.

I have the HD box from Direct TV and the guy that installed it said to hook up a digital Radio Shack antenna (about $15) to it and get local channels. Little antenna is plastic and is about 4 x 6 inches and mounted behind the TV set. The Direct TV menu shows the local stations right along with the satellite channels and you can't tell the difference in reception. HD is pertect. I now get 5 PBS channels and 3 NBC and so on. Advice ....Go for the HD receiver with this feature or the DVR unit if you have over the air broadcasts in your area.
