When Fisher left AFA...

Recommended Posts

Besides the CSU fans on this board, the majority feel as if Sonny was given a raw deal (especially the WYO fans). When Fisher left AFA, did any of you feel as if he was ousted or was his situation differnet then what happened with Sonny and CSU? I felt their situations were similar but I don't remember being bad blood with DeBerry and AFA. Correct me if I'm wrong?

The article above, Calhoun putting some faith in CSU. Thoughts on his bold statement about the future of Ram's football?

It's only a matter of time....

I remember the whole thing going down very similar to What happened to Lubick. Both Men were told, "thanks for all you've done, now it's time to move on." Weather or not they got a raw deal has already been debated ad-nauseum. I'm ready to begin a new era with fond memories of all that Coach Lubick did for CSU.

About the article, Northern Colorado at Purdue = BLOODBATH!

Nice comments from Calhoun.

Both situations were similar, but I think AF handled it better.

Wasn't DeBerry given the oppurtunity to call a press conference and announce his resignation?

Lubicks situation was kept pretty quiet, and the telling/confirming moment was at the end of the last game when Lubuck's son was on the sidelines and broke down..........everyone knew at that moment that Lubick had just coached his last game at CSU.

My understanding - Deberry was told to fire some coordinators or step down. Deberry had NEVER fired a single staff member in 23 years. He stepped down, but he wanted to keep coaching.

Our message board tended to support Deberry, and blame our inept AD (an easy target). Turns out the AD was right. IF Deberry had simply fired his DC and brought in Tim Deruyter's defense he would have had a winning season last year.

I think everybody is now pleased with the situation. DeBerry is now enjoying retirement, and Calhoun will prove to be a superior coach and recruiter.

This is exactly how I felt with the firing of Sonny. It heard that Sonny had to get rid of his OC and DC but he couldn't do that. Therefore, Sonny had to go. I think Farichild jumping in for Lubbick is better for CSU as well.

I think certain comments made regarding his opponent one week vs. TCU didn't help his cause. I don't think he was let go because of it. I just think that it made it a little easier for the AFA to let him go.

It appeared to me that everyone at the Academy was happy with the way it was handled. Fisher hadn't done much of anything since their 1998 WAC title and it appeared most folks down there endorsed the move.

Interesting. I was not aware that DeBerry was so loyal to his assistants. The circumstances of both the Lubick and DeBerry firings appear very similar.

The change had to be forced. Both men had a lot of pride and did great things for their respective institutions.
