BYU shows that 2 losses doesn't necessarily knock

Recommended Posts

Finishes #17- just outside the secondary qualification criteria (#16 or better and ahead of a champ from an AQ conference). While they were just short, it shows in can be done (some have opined that a team would have to be undefeated or at a minimum one loss in order to get into the BCS). Big reason is that the computers rewarded the stronger MWC- BYU's computer avg was solid at #18, while the other two loss team from a non-AQ conference, Boise, had a computer avg was not ranked by any computer. So while some argue that an easier schedule makes it easier to go undefeated, a more difficult schedule gives you an advantage over other schools with similar or even better records.

Had they made #16 they wouldn't have been invited anyway due to a team with an easier schedule going undefeated. Remember the non-aq's have the motto "there can be only one". So in this case the easier schedule was the smarter way to go.

Thats very true KF. However, the MWC also showed that with them ,its either BCS, or nothing. What kind of a reward is it to run through the conference undefeated only to get stuck playing a .500 team in a downward spiral, who you have already played that season and open the next season with? Their bowl tie-ins are actually worse than their TV deal, and thats saying something.

While it does seem like a terrible matchup (6-6 vs 10-2 (#19)), BYU needs to humiliate the PAC 10 as they did last year. And if we can get some help from the national media (ESPN), then perhaps the respect generated would work some changes. Other than winning every game they play, I don't see what Bronco and his team can do in the near future to improve things. I feel as arrogant as most fans from MWC teams claim Cougar fans are, by saying that the Brigham Young Athletic program is being held back by staying in this conference. Athletic Director Tom Holmoe has LOTS of work to do... and so does the BYU football team...

And yet, BYU won this week and had THREE teams between 10 and 18 lose and still were not moved up in the one poll and just 2 spots in the other. Just like with Hawaii, you get the sense that there is a block specifically voting the non-BCS teams lower to keep them at the edge or out of the BCS conversation...

So where is BYU going to go? Those invites are just rolling in aren't they?

While BYU had beaten TCU 2 out of the last 3 years, BYU is not taking care of nonconference games as they should. 11-1 will get you into the BCS. QUit whining about the MWC and win your nonconference games! TCU didn't make a claim that MWC was holding it back when a 10-1 team had to go to Houston for a Bowl game that year against Iowa St.. That TCU team finished ranked 8th in the country and had beaten OU on the road. A 10-2 TCU team in '06 got a 7-5 NIU team in SD also had a marquee win over Texas Tech. Did the sytem screw TCU, yep it did. But for BYU to have the arrogance to think they are they only team in the MWC to get screwed is last couple years is very self centered and unconcerning towards their conference mates.

Us at Killerforgs saw the whiney arse article from the Provo Herald. The writer conveniently omitted some facts from his article. Just more whine flowing out of Provo and trying to throw fellow conference members under the bus. Some of you need to get over yourselves.

BYU might try to win more of their nonconference games and this wouldn't happen. Winning your bowl game does not coont in the standings for the following season.

It does indirectly. The basis for pre-season rankings is your recent record and recent rankings plus an assessment of the players and coaches you are bringing back. If a few teams ahead of us lose and we win, we could like last season end up in the top fifteen. Should that happen, we would go into next season with the credentials of having had two consecutive 11-2 seasons, two undefeated conference championships, and two consecutive top fifteen finishes and bowl wins against PAC opponents. That and bringing back most of our offense including our QB will give us a boost as far as preseason rankings, which matter only in that it gives an opportunity for positioning for a strong BCS run.

Yes, I agree that winning helps you start up higher in the rankings to start the year but BYU needs to do a better job of taking care of businees in the first part of the season against nonconference opponents. That is my point. The MWV is not currently an autobid conference, so to get to the BCS, taking care of nonconference games is important. There is no BCS autobid for winning the MWC and BYU should know that as well as anybody.

This surprises you? If they ranked them higher it might be ammunition for inclusion to an auto-bid conference.

The BCS keeps the status quo as long as it can keep the illusion of football superiority, lose that illusion and they could be forced to change and include.

Of course it would help if we won more games and shattered the illusion by results.

I love this Bowl match up for BYU... It gives BYU a chance to right the earlier loss to UCLA with a Pac 10 reffing crew... Also if BYU can pound UCLA it might have a baring on next years game in Provo with UCLA (set the tone). Remember BYU will return 10 starters next year from this teams O... I have been some what surprised UCLA has not fired their coach yet... and get this the rumor is most want Chris Peterson to replace him, yet he has not even been fired........

Until a 1-loss "mid-major" gets an invite to a BCS bowl, I will continue to believe it's not possible. 3 non-AQ's have gone now, and regardless of schedule, they were all undefeated. It will be a huge step forward if/when a 1-loss "mid-major" gets an invite, but I won't hold my breathe. And if/when that happens, it will only be because that 1-loss mm is in the top 12. The BCS isn't going to let us in unless they absolutely have to.

11-1 will get you into the BCS.

It will? Please give me ONE example of when 11-1 has been good enough. Until it happens, it's impossible.

This year was such a crazy year for football, I don't think you can draw too many conclusions. Unless we continue to see more years where we have 2-loss teams in the national championship, I don't think you'll see non-AQS team making the BCS unless they are undefeated.

TCU would have made it with 1 loss in both 2000 and 2005 under the current rules, Miami (Oh) in 2003. The BCS made the current rules knowing full well that a one loss team from a non-AQ conference not only could make it, they made the rules knowing that they were likely to make it (and had 3 of the previous six years prior to the adoption of the new rules). I would take the opposite "show me" stand as you- until a one loss team doesn't get an invite, I will continue to believe it is not only possible, but probable. And I think a two loss team is possible, as BYU bascially showwed this year. A lot would have to happen for a two loss team to make it (strong conference, good nonconference schedule, no late losses, champ from an AQ conference less than #16), but it is possible.

2000 TCU

2003 Miami

2004 Louisville (if Utah wasn't undefeated)

2005 TCU

All of those teams would have made the BCS under the current rules. Actually, I think the 2003 Boise and TCU teams are about the only one loss teams from non-AQ conferences that wouldn't have made it under the current rules.

Wow, you don't think that BYU's athletic department doesn't know this? Look, BYU may have dropped the ball early in the year, but what in the hell was TCU doing? TCU was supposed to win the conference. Don't throw stones dip s h i t....

MOST HATED TEAM IN AMERICA!!!!! DAMN PROUD OF IT!!!!

BUCK WITH BRONCO AND BYU OR BUCK THE HELL OFF!!!!

So while some argue that an easier schedule makes it easier to go undefeated, a more difficult schedule gives you an advantage over other schools with similar or even better records.

Exactly...although the parity in D-IA football opened the door a little. BYU proved to be a top-25 team this year. They got better as the year went on and I dare say they'll beat the Bruins in Vegas...but even an 11-1 BYU would have definitely been giving Hawaii a run.

Those who lay the fault with BYU for losing road games to Tulsa and UCLA are exactly right.

Crooked as it is, you still have to earn the merit and not hope to slip in when other teams stumble...and road wins are key to that.

Great teams win on the road...Great teams make their own luck/magic.

That's what BYU has to get over to get over on the BCS. If they do, the SoS will help them. If they don't, they'll just remain a good team that can win this league and hover on the outside of the national conversation.

As it is, BYU has four road losses against decent or average teams in the past two years. @ Arizona, @ Boston College, @ UCLA and @ Tulsa.

Looking at this year specifically - BYU is 10-2 but they also had some narrow victories against Utah and (somewhat) TCU. 8-4 was possible, 12-0 was possible. As it was they split their tougher games, winning 2 at home and losing 2 on the road. You could call Arizona 'decent' but I'd rank them below all four of those other teams.

That's Par in my book. BYU needs birdies to kick the door down. Give Bronco and this sophomore class time. I think we're close.

Go Cougars
