CSU HC Search Committe Open Thread

Recommended Posts

Hey, Rams. . . I know it's early, but any rumors on candidates for the job? Will CSU go with the "must have head-coaching experience" route or the "excellent coordinator" route?

I assume that the Rams won't cannibalize a head coach (e.g. Chuck Long) from within the MWC. And that they'll probably look strongly at Big 12, PAC-10, and MWC Coordinators. As well as HCs in the WAC, MAC, Sun Belt or possibly I-AA. I also assume they go for a young coach on the way up (and not, Tomey, Price, Schnellenberger, etc.)

I have NO CONNECTIONS TO CSU and NO SOURCES, I just wonder if the following names will crop up:

1. Bobby Hauck--HC at Montana

2. Gary Andersen--DC at Utah

3. Mark Stoops--DC at Arizona

4. DeWayne Walker--DC at UCLA

5. Chip Kelly--OC at Oregon

6. Todd Dodge--HC at North Texas

7. Gary Crowton--OC at LSU (CSU alum)

8. Turner Gill--HC at Buffalo

9. Mike Schultz--OC at TCU

10. Robert Anae--OC at BYU

Any thoughts? (Please don't go into ATTACK mode. I don't know the first thing about the search, I'm just throwing out random names. . . mostly wondering if you have any good info.)

6. Todd Dodge--HC at North Texas

To quote Johnny Mac: "YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!?!?!??!?!?!!!!

Dodge is an early disaster at UNT. The Green was a program which was mediocre to okay and now it flat-out sucks.

Larry Fedora, OC at Oklahoma State (No. 8 offense in the country) would be a great hire for them. He'd do well in Ft. Collins.

Subject: Breakdown of CSU head coach candidates

Posted by: Rams'n'Huskers on Tue Nov 27 2007 1:53:02 PM

Message:

I posted this yesterday but it got lost quickly as the press releases

from the President and AD came out minutes after my post.

I spent several years in the sports industry. First I was in athletic

administration serving on several search committees. I then spent 10

years as a sports broadcaster. The reason why I mention this is

because during that time I met and visited with a lot of coaches. The

following list includes some people I hope CSU considers. It also

includes people who I think CSU is already considering.

Dan McCarney - South Florida Assit. Head Coach and Def. Line

Coach. The former Iowa State Head Coach is a guy that has a ton

of energy with a great attitude. In all of my years as a sports

broadcaster/reporter he was one of my favorite people to interview. He

was fired at ISU after taking that program from the depths of the Big 8

to nearly winning the Big 12 North twice. The ISU administration felt

that Dan could take them close to a conference title but not good

enough to get them over the last hurdle and actually win a title. So

they get a new coach, Chizek, and they certainly have had their

struggles this season. From 2000 to 2005 Iowa State won 7 games or

more 5 of the 6 seasons including a 9-3 record in 2000. He is now the

assistant head coach at a rising program in South Florida. Before

coming to Iowa State he was the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin for

four years. Dan is a great defensive coach which is really needed at

CSU right now. Also, Dan had several assistants at Iowa State with

CSU ties. Tony Alford was his RB Coach/Assit. Head Coach. Tony is

now the RB Coach at Louisville. Dan also had John Skladany as his

DC. John was at CSU from 93-95 when the Rams won two WAC titles

and went to the Holiday Bowl twice. Dan would be a great, great hire

but will CSU put up the money to get him.

Turner Gill - Head Coach at Buffalo. Gill has taken one of the

worse programs in DI to a 5-3 conference record, 5-7 overall record.

Buffalo beat Frank Solich and Ohio this year along with wins over

Toledo, Akron and Kent State. This is a team that in the past 5 years

went 2-10, 1-10, 2-9, 1-11, and 1-11. Gill is a wonderful human being

that builds a close relationship with his players. He is a very spiritual

person which has helped him develop into the person he is today. Of

course he spent most of his life at Nebraska but after leaving NU he

spent a year in the NFL with the Packers. Gill has some good coaches

at Buffalo that would be nice additions including DC Jimmy Williams.

He is a guy I always wanted NU to bring back.

Shawn Watson - Nebraska Offensive Coordinator. This may

not be a popular name since he was once with CU but he is very well

liked at NU. Also, despite what some CU fans will say he had a very

effective offense at CU. Watson really helped develop NU's offense this

year. Unfortunately, Callahan still called the plays so Watson was

limited as the OC at NU. Shawn is a long shot but a up-and-comer who

knows the landscape in the state of Colorado.

Gregg Brandon - Bowling Green Head Coach. BG is 8-4 this

year and 38-23 as head coach at BG. He lead BG to back-to-back

bowl wins in 2003 and 2004. Brandon served as the Offensive

Coordinator under Urban Meyer at Bowling Green in 2001 and 2002.

Meyer gives Brandon a lot of credit in creating the spread offense Meyer

still uses today at Florida. Brandon is from Colorado as he played

football for Gary Barnett at Air Academy HS. Brandon, who is 50,

coached at Ellicott HS in Colorado before heading to the college ranks.

He spent two years at CU before going to BGreen. He has been the

HC at BG since 2003. Brandon's OC at BG is Mike McCall who was

very successful at Mullen HS. He was 68-17 at Mullen from 1994 to

2000. He is a Southern Colorado graduate so he would be a nature fit

as the CSU offensive coordinator. Brandon would be affordable as is

base salary is $159,135.

Steve Fairchild - Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator. Steve, of

course, has a lot of history with CSU. He was with them from 1993 to

2000. He has now been in the NFL for 7 years so I'm not sure if he is

willing to go back to the college game after establishing himself in the

league. The Bills are struggling offensively so he may look for a change

before he is let go. Salary could be a major issue as assistants in the

NFL are now making $400,000 plus. As a coordinator Steve could be

making $600,000+.

In looking at this candidates here is my list of preference:

1. Gregg Brandon - Has Colorado ties, is affordable, has had success

at a mid-major and helped Urban Meyer create his spread offense.

Could be a long term guy as I'm not sure any major conferences would

go after him.

2. Dan McCarney - High energy guy that coached in a major

conference. Will recruit well and will help put CSU back on the map.

Negative - if he turns the program around he could be gone in 3 to 4

years.

3. Turner Gill - Rising star in the coaching ranks who everyone loves

being around. Lacks head coaching experience which is a negative.

4. Steve Fairchild - A guy who knows a lot about CSU and what it takes

to win in Fort Collins and in the MWC. Just not sure he would take a

step back in the college game after 7 years in the NFL.

5. Steve Watson - Total long shot but this guy will be a head coach

soon. If he does well at CSU, he would be gone in a few years so that

is a concern.

Some people have mentioned Frank Solich. I know Frank well as I was

the host of the Frank Solich Pre-Game Show when he was at NU. Nice

guy but does not have the energy or personality CSU needs right now.

CSU needs a high energy guy that can get the fans and community

excited about the program. Solich is not that type of guy. He isn't the

type of guy who is going to go around doing speeches that gets people

excited. He is doing a nice job at Ohio but not a person I would

consider for the CSU job.

Others have suggested Bobby Hauck the Montana Head Coach. Yes

he has an impressive 52-14 record at his alma mater but there are

concerns with Hauck. Here is one story I will share. While at CU, he

was recruiting Andre Gurode. Hauck was doing an in-home visit with

Andre knowing that Texas was to follow him with an in-home visit.

Hauck asked if he could hide behind the couch during the Texas visit.

Gurode said sure so Hauck did it. He actually hide behind the couch!

This was a story told by Neuheisel at a recruiting luncheon several

years ago. (Note: Hauck was an assistant under Slick Rick Neuheisel

at both Washington and Colorado). On top of that Montana has had

several off-the-field problems with their football players. Several

Montana players that Hauck recruited and allowed into the program

have been arrested. Three players broke into several homes with

semiautomatic machine guns and tasers. Another Montana player was

arrested for attempted murder. Let

I think Dan McCarney would be a great hire for CSU, and I don't think he would necessarily be gone in a few years if he got things going because he is already older in age. McCarney always has disciplined teams on the field, meaning that they were usually one of the lowest penalized teams in the country. If he could somehow bring Alford and Skladany with him it would be a positive thing. Alford's RBs rarely fumbled the football at Iowa State, and the ISU defense was usually pretty solid under Skladany despite the fact that they usually did not have the caliber of athletes on the field as many of their opponents. Furthermore, at Iowa State he recruited states like Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma,Texas, and the California JCs. All these are in what I would consider the recruiting territory of Colorado State.

Alford played at CSU and Skladany coached @ CSU in 93-95

While I think the majority of your list are not under consideration for the job, I think there's a good chance your list contains the next head coach of CSU.

I am intrigued by #5 Chip Kelly. The guy is a winner and I love what he has done with Oregon's offense.

Steve Fairchild would be nice too.

I bet Iowa State wishes they could hire McCarney.

I still don't understand why they let him go, but I guess it is kind of like Bower at Southern Miss and ISU just think they needed to go in a new direction. Iowa State was poor this season, 3-9. But they improved greatly at the end of the year and ended up with victories over Iowa, Colorado, and Kansas State. I think it took them too long to learn Chizik's defensive scheme, that is why they lost to Kent State, Toledo, and Northern Iowa early in the season.

Bill Cockhill. He's in need of a job and he DEFINITELY knows how to beat the Pokes, he's done it about as much as Lubick.

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

I don't know about machine guns and tasers. I live in Missoula and I have never heard anything about the guns and tasers. What was reported in the local press was that 6 UM players entered a home and beat the crap out of another UM student. The attempted murder thing did happen in California this past summer. Overall I think Hauck is a Gary Crowton type coach. He has a good mind for the game but doesn't have a great level of discipline. His players do seem to do whatever they want. I personally wouldn't hire him but the Missoulian reported that he is one of the top four choices for the job.

I hope not. You don't replace Sonny with Hauk. Besides, this is a huge moment for PK, I think he will pick a coach he has some real experience with and some faith they won't let him down. Doubt it will be Kill, but I would definitely think heartland schools. It will be someone he knows from his previous position.

Based on recent quotes form Kowalczyk, a 1-AA coach is VERY unlikey to be hired at CSU.

What about Karl Dorrell at CSU??

Didn't he used to coach for the Broncos? He's a good recruiter.....good fit?

I would very much like to see Karl Dorrell as the next CSU head coach. Hopefully our AD at least interviews him. I think he would be a great fit at CSU and the MWC.

Yes, think Dorrell would be a good fit.

I think he would do well in the MWC. Last year UCLA was 10-2 with a win over USC, so he knows how to win.

I agree with the above post about Steve Fairchild. Ever since he left, CSU began a slow decent not an immediate one. That may mean he recruited well and as they began to graduate the replacement recruits were not as good, even with his same system in place. Besides, he needs head coaching experience anyway. A win-win all around, but can you afford him?
