Four losses too many at home. Add to that 7 losses at the T&M last year. Good possibility of 7 losses at the T&M again. Horrible job defending the home floor. Yet CDR deserves another year

Did you watch the UNLV-Utah State game the other night, where we got blown out?

http://runrebs.com/2015/02/27/chris-wood-fighting-to-counter-physical-defenses/

To his credit, Wood has bounced back in a big way after the mid-season slump. He has racked up five double-doubles since the San Diego State game, and he has scored in double figures in all 10 contests since then. And the numbers suggest that he’s battling in the paint—last year, 35.9 percent of his field goal attempts came around the rim; this season he has bumped that figure up to 45.5 percent.

“Chris understands it’s going to be physical,” Rice said. “They’re going to try to push him off the block and double him and do all those things, and he just has to adjust. That’s what good players do. They make adjustments.”

But it’s not just about adapting his game to deal with more physical defenses—Wood also has to adjust his mentality. As things were unraveling for the Rebels in the second half against Utah State on Tuesday, Wood felt he was the victim of several non-calls. At one point, he argued so much that the refs were forced to slap him with a technical foul.

If Wood wants to make the leap from star to superstar, developing a bulldog attitude and embracing contact is probably the next step.

Rice said Wood isn’t there yet, but that he’s on the right track.

“I think he’s still learning that,” Rice said. “Certainly teams are going to continue to be physical with him. I think that’s part of his development as a player, to continue to learn how to be more physical and establish position and try to draw contact and get to the free-throw line as much as he can.”

Until then, opponents will continue to try to defend Wood by the book.
