  1. Sure, if you are a G5 school it matters and is a sign of weakness independently of how well your conference is doing. If a P5 conference beats each other up it is a sign if their strength
  2. As usual it is not about athletic value, but purely about finances plus a bit of politics. Having the play-in was a way of exanding the tourney by two teams adding a bit more intrigue and thereby create some additional money. In addition it was a first step toward additional expansion of the tourney which is still a highly contested topic, but will eventually happen...for financial reasons. So as long as this sort of thing adds money it is not going to go away. Rather you are going to see more of it.
  3. Talk about a seriously strange career. Several great successes, but also a lot of bad blood and health issues. Personally I think Kill could have been a really great coach but health issues and some serious personality issues (which may or may not be related to his health issues) severely limited him. Really not sure what to make of this guy. Hiring Sanchez as his successor after a season like this...I consider this to be one of the most head scratching decisions ever even by NMSU standards.
  4. I used to have a ton of respect for Kill. After this moronic rant...not so much anymore. With all that has happened between the two schools the last two years from a brawl at last years football game in Las Cruces to a deadly shooting in ABQ, to his prize QB peeing on our logo in the very indoor facility he is now talking about Kill should know exactly why Nunez was acting the way he did and he should just shut up. But sure, let's stir the pot some more, let's see where this leads next year.
  5. Very true, in fact looking at the last ten years only two teams won the World Series while having a Top 3 payroll. The 2020 Dodgers (2nd highest) and the 2018 RedSox (highest). All other World Series winners had payrolls between #7 to #18. So one could argue that the sweet spot is to be in the upper third but not at the top ;) That being said I still think the current salary structure is out of control. I don't think MLB absolutely needs a salary cap. I would however like to see limits to contract lengths and defereals. Frankly a ten year contract is a stretch even for the best players and deferrals being paid for 30 years after a contract ends just make a mockery of any type of financial fair play. To me this is not about wealthy owners spending too much, rather it is about crippling players and organizations literally for decades after a contract has been signed. Short term this may seem like a good idea...long term it just hurts especially since deferred contracts are becoming the norm these days.
  6. The first few years the Dodgers will for sure earn a ton of money due to the interest in Ohtani. Later on, we will see. He is a one of a kind player, but given his injury history I doubt he will play 10 more years. Overall I can't help but think that independent of Ohtani's contract the baseball contract scale is broken. Teams trying to tie up players for 10 years with deferrals that reach even longer. The result is that many teams end up with a ton of dead money being paid to players that have retired years ago. I don't mind owners wasting their money, but it hurts the overall competition and therfor ultimately the sport as a whole.
  7. My thoughts and fears exactly. The score itself did not look suspicious to me at all at the time, but having a team average 53 yards per punt return on three returns was quite weird. Firing our ST coordinator right after that even more so. As has been mentioned by others, given our history of shooting ourselves in the foot I am in fact concerned.
  8. Here's to seeing you over on our new board soon!
  9. I think what would be needed is a player union like in the pros. What will not fly is the NCAA unilaterally trying to regulate this. Then again universities have for years tried their best to block any sort of student athlete union and I do not really see that changing soon.
  10. Spot on. The portal and NIL are changing College Sports in ways many people, both fans and coaches do not yet fully grasp. As a fan I hate it, but I gotta admit that at least for the students that profit from it, it is a good and well deserved thing. However I hope that at some point a decent framework for this will be developed.
  11. They should just introduce NFL style free agency and be done with it. Given the whole NIL, transfer window developments the whole scholarship topic is a joke anyway.
  12. A relative of mine also almost fell victim to false acussations of sexual harassment so yeah, this is definitely an issue and it is getting out of hand. That being said I am not sure I fully buy into Trevor Bauer's side of the story here. First of all it was not just one woman, as part of the whole story it was revealed that over the years there at least four women who independently from each other raised such allegations. In addition to that why exactly would he settle with her out of court when already before this he had all the evidence needed to show he was innocent and the victim of false allegations. To me that doesn't really make sense, with all that evidence in hand wouldn't he have gone to court and legally cleared his name? I am in no position to judge, but the combination of multiple accusers over multiple years plus him settling out of court despite claiming to have a lot of evidence doesn't really smell right...
  13. Better get used to it. Those new superconferences will almost inevitably at some point split officially from the rest of the field. We may not like it, but with all that is going an that is almost certainly what is going to happen sooner or later. Those revamped schedules are just the next step in that direction
  14. The INT was bad, the fumble was on the O-line for letting the defender blindside him that badly. In general I think Hopkins did well, but since we had no running game for most the game we were pretty much one dimensional on offense. And neither Hopkins nor our receivers are good enough to cover for that.
  15. Too bad our defense forgets how to tackle in the 2nd half. Good luck the rest of the way Wyoming.
